I can just see Nick now, standing in front of his PC and his flat screen, camel coloured overcoat on, shouting the odds at imaginary customers in his lounge room. An octogenarian bagman swinging the cracked leather satchel next to the coffee table, while a gorgeous young thing records his transactions on betfair!!

In your mind a Lay loss hurts a lot more than a back loss.Mathematically it's all the same but your mind feels it more.

I can vouch for Dos as a stand up guy. If you want a bet on horses you should look him up.

Send your business back to the on course bookies. Let's make some competition for these weak as p!ss pommy corps ffs!

You have to ask yourself why is it that on-course bookmakers have always been unable to refuse a bet to a certain limit from ANYONE as long as they were there on a first come/first serve basis. When all the Aussie betting authorities insisted on this as a condition to a bookie even getting a licence, what was its purpose? Why couldn't these bookies just act like the UK Corporates and refuse any bet from someone that might have an idea and then wind in the odds? Why is there one rule for corporates and another for on-course bookies, no doubt even in the NT?

"Why is there one rule for corporates and another for on-course bookies?"

Would love to hear the answer to this question as well but suspect we never will as has to do with 'protectionism' & some god given right to gouge the betting public like they never have been gouged before.

very hard to police the online bets

was not much different in years gone by with the oncourse rules either

How many years back are you talking about nickw? I was betting with on-course bookies since 1968 and the rule was solid then. You have odds on the board and any smart punter that claimed the bookie was given those odds to a minimum. I remember when the derby bookie ring was dying in South Aust, sometimes more bookies and staff than punters, going back at least 20 years, yet they had to take a bet to lose $500, how much would that get you now, not far off 2k I'd bet with inflation, yet billion dollar corporates can cut you to bet near nothing or simply close an account if they consider you "uneconomical". No on course bookie has a chance against them with these twisted rules. The smart money gravitates to them and any good ones that take these bets are pretty much doomed to fail.

Would imagine it much easier to police online bets where everything is traceable and the data is in the system.
Would imagine the scenario of "he knocked back my bet", "umm no I didn't, I would the odds in before he got here" would be a much longer process to prove and a waste of time for the punter.

Seriously though, there are very valid questions here regarding corps being able to pick and choose.  Has anybody looked right into the legalities of it, and if so can't something be done?
As far as I can see, the only real argument is that if you know you are guaranteed to get set for a minimum amount at the track, you are more likely to go there.  But that just isn't happening and I doubt ever will.

Wouldn't be hard to find enough people for a class action case against them.

The reason the corporate bookies are licenced in the Northern Territory, is that back in the late 70's early 80's,the NT government allowed on course bookmakers in Darwin to bet 24/7 on anything. This was a first in Aust, although I can remember something similar in Tassie back then.

The bookies just about made up the rules to suit themselves.

Brian Clark was the bookie I bet with, and all the betting was done on credit, with settling once a week, and you could always get set.

I was a bookie myself in Brisbane in those days.

Unfortunately over time, these old time bookies sold out, and we now have these parasites, from England and Ireland.

its complex questions thats for sure BJT
Maybe would help if NT racing commission was on the job and doing something to earn the millions in tax from these corps

Didnt Mark Read take all bets when he was in charge IAS bet
seemed to work ok for him it seemed
Use the smart info to your advantage betback if required

If the Chinese want to come here & buy up an Iron Ore mine they have a mountain of foreign ownership etc etc red tape to get through.

How is it that these foreign bookies have just waltzed in & gobbled up whatever business they want?? Where's the oversight??

Complex, Ain't that the truth.
Apart from all the other Fragmentations
some of which
National Pools:Should have happened 10 years ago but wont as no State Govt will ever give up their ground.
BF:Only got in through the weak Link Tas Govt(thank goodness)however now Publicly Listed has changed its business model to suit shareholders at the expense of its Customer.
TV Rights:Still Bun-fighting behind closed doors to decide what they want us to see.
Corps:Thinking it would be a free spin have sold out to Foreign owned, who's business acumen is ban the winners, encourage the losers(99.9% of all players). That well dries up as do their funds.
Race Clubs:70% have a yearly loss and depend on Industry hand-outs and a cup day bonanza just to make the balance sheet look average.
Customer Base:Changing Demographic Profile(Gen Y onwards)have no and won't ever carry on the profile of the Pre and Baby boomer's Interest in 4 Leggeds.
Customer Demographic Options:Slowly declining Interest in horses and increase in Sports betting.

and that's just a few
The underlying problem as I observe it(worth shyte)
Are
Fact:As one forum member wrote 0.01% will finish up winning.
Even with his Colossus and genius maths acumen ZR still needs the rebate to make it Profitable.

2.Ego,most won't be deterred by deminishing values,Saturdays what would you rather do or go fishing ??.

3.Political Agenda's as mentioned by davez, keep stiflying anything half progressive.

i have looked into the legals of this, and the only way that the corp's will be made to bet to a minimum for a requested bet is if the NT or the ruling bodies make it part of their mandate, there is no legal action that can be taken by indivuals to make them bet you.

So the answer here is keep the pressure on the NT racing and gaming to change the corps mandate so it is included in their license agreements

I'd call it Darwin's Law in reverse. It means survival of the weakest (most gutless) bookmakers. Tom W is an example along with 365, spends a fortune on advertising while spending more time sifting through their database of clients for possible winners to close down than framing markets.

Yesterday I tried to put $100 on Tribet under with Unibet for an interest. The odds were 2.90 at the time.
Not only did they refuse the bet, they wound the odds in to 2.60. I could understand if it was 1k, but 100 bucks?
I rang them. All the guy kept saying was the price changed. I said "yes, I know I was the one that got it changed, for a lousy hundred bucks".
He referred me to the governing body for disputes. They only accept applications by email. Should I bother?
