Good luck today, guys.
Whatever I pick, it's going to be on the speculative side given we need a minor miracle! I thought about Lady Maura in the Listed race (2.55) at Nottingham, who I selected on here two starts back when she offered nothing stepped up in trip to a mile on heavy ground in a Navan handicap. She's quite well bred being a half-sister to high class mudlark Donjuan Triumphant, which is why presumably they're chasing a bit of Black Type despite appearing out of her depth, though that said she wasn't disgraced in a Listed race at Bath last time, given the ground might have been quick enough (her win came on soft) and she didn't get a clear run briefly inside the final furlong. Her trainer Ross O'Sullivan did pull a rabbit out of the hat in a Listed race at Navan last month with 33-1 chance Rocky Sky, who after winning the battle to lead, just kept on galloping relentlessly to thrash a big feild of useful fillies. Could lightening strike twice? Probably not, unless the first time tongue tie combined with a return to soft ground has a dramamtic effect. So my pin has come down on Kat's Bob (currently top priced 33-1) in the 6.35 Thirsk,, who appears to have a knee action and whose form indicates he is more effective under softer conditions. He is eligible for weaker handicaps than this and who knows what effect the draw will have, but hopefully he can be competitive returned to softer terrain. |

3.10 York Hurricane Lane EW
If we were in contention I wouldn't have put this up. At the moment he is my idea of the Derby winner, but his chance is probably (much) stronger in that race than tomorrow. Already written up on the ante-post thread but to summarise the negatives: jock/trainer in poor form, almost certainly wants further and has the worst draw for a horse who wants to go forward. I suspect Gear Up and the O'Brien spoiler will go forward and at best Buick might be forced to sit third or fourth, hopefully not too wide. The Newbury form is at best listed/Group 3 but upped in trip he could be much better than that. I am just hoping that the attitude he showed at Newbury will give him a chance tomorrow. He might not win, but I see him as the best horse I can tip this week. Good luck all. |

Good luck dd, might have a couple o quid e/w miself.

As ever fingers crossed. I have backed him today, but would emphasise the Derby, and maybe even the Leger, would be a better fit. I just hope that if he does get beat they don't instantly rule out the Derby. Assuming he is finishing that wouldn't be clever. Godolphin don't have an alternative.

Thanks, not saying much, but it's the best winner I have put up on here.
I have had some shocking luck with ante-post bets this season so not getting ahead of myself regarding the Derby, but he does have the right credentials. How many bets did Corals take at 14/1? |

Nice spot, differentdrum.
Interesting race to watch, with High Defintion shaping like he'll come on plenty for it. |

Thanks all.
George, it's difficult for me not to have a hint of bias, but I will be very disappointed if Hurricane Lane doesn't confirm the form. It was a big step forward from Newbury and upped in trip I would be very hopeful of another big step forward. I thought he won cosily, certainly with more in hand than the final verdict would suggest. He is straightforward with a great attitude. He should handle the occasion. High Definition on the other hand you could argue took a step backwards from his juvenile year. He was already a Group 2 winner although to be fair subsequent efforts have shown that to be a pretty moderate race for the grade. Today I thought he made cheap late gains when the race was over. He wasn't part of the battle and at no stage did he look like winning. As I said on another thread I would have Hurricane Lane as second favourite, and I would argue the substance of his form is stronger than Bolshoi Ballet. We will see in few weeks. Hopefully, Coolmore team tactics don't decide the result. |
|
By:
Excellent points, differentdrum, particularly regarding whether the run was needed by High Definition, or if he was just buying lengths cheaply at the finish having not been in the heat of the battle.
Suppose people just presume one of O'Brien's will continue to improve, as plenty have, even belatedly, but whatever, it's spiced things up a bit with Godolphin having a contender to challenge the Ballydoyle battalions. |

Well done Werbie.
Will leave my selection until tomorrow. Tried to pick out a few that might handle the ground at Haydock and the Curragh. Problem is several of those have been backed and more importantly both meetings could be called off. If they are on I am not intending going for a very big price. Good luck all. |
