Thinking about the real lasting global stars, so often the vocals alone are just part of the package.

When did the UK last produce a Michael Jackson? A Prince? A Madonna?

Cher got back on track with her performances last night. She really does command the stage like nobody else I've ever seen on the X Factor.
One problem she had before this week was Dannii minogue who was pushing her constantly to gradually drop the rapping, dancing, and general 'magic' to focus mainly on singing. That led to the 'imagine disaster'.
Cher dressed like a choirgirl sitting on a stair like kermit's nephew, but even ms Minogue has now realised that was the wrong direction and is now simply giving Cher useful (objective) feedback on her performances.

For me this makes Cher dangerous for the first time in a while because the (disastrous) idea of limitting her SHOWMANSHIP (by trying to make her appeal to a wider audience) has been abandoned thankfully.
And Cowell genuinely likes her (as opposed to 'professionally' liking 1D and Rebecca). He sees some of himself in her attitude I suspect. 30s+ a massive price surely.

I agree with the title and the first part of the OP. Rebecca has a much better voice but until she loses her shyness (and she will but maybe not during XF) she doesn't have all-round star quality.

However winning XF is a different matter and I don't think Cher can win because she has a bad attitude problem and is unlikeable to the XF demographic. She's been B2 (probably B1) and doesn't poll well. (Her attitude, like Rebecca's shyness, may largely come from nerves and may be overcome but it will take a while).

^^^ wot Henry says.

Although, I have commented elsewhere that if you look back at her audition what they have done to her since is very disappointing.  They've turned her into a sort of embarrassing caricature of what she would like to be.

Yes well said.  She's just not likeable, too much attitude and seems thick.  Her interviews after her songs are cringing.

Yes I agree winning is a different matter. It will be very very difficult to get her to the winning post.

I thought at 20s last week she was a bad back as there was no indicator that she would abandon the 'ballad graveyard' strategy of taking on Matt and rebecca in a straight singing contest (a strategy she could never win).
30s now seems good for a joooourney to single figures though. The intention was spelt out with these two songs that they are going to go uncompromisingly for the 'current/contemporary/all out 'wow' factor' angle from now on.

Even her look for both songs was very aggressive. it was almost like warpaint to me, a deliberate shift from the 'angel on the stairs' look of last week.

Yes I see the strategy.  If she stays which I doubt a little I don't think she'll go much further though.

Excuse the laziness, JM, copied this over from elsewhere

I thought her songs were too indistinguishable and she would have been better to have finished with a "rock" ballad along the lines of Eternal Flame or I Go To Sleep (loose interpretation I know, but hasn't stopped them in the past).

She was my favourite at the start but she's regressed week by week. I wouldn't be at all surprised if she's first one out tonight. She's clearly lacking a fan base, as last week's vote showed,  and she's cringeworth in her interviews. If you accept Wagner is isn't going to come bottom thats leaves 3 possibilities, Cher, Katie or Mary. Mary has a good voice and I think that will prevent her coming bottom so for me its one of two and at 7/1 thats a bet I'm all over with a saver on Katie.

Last week's vote only showed that Cher's fanbase weren't going to vote for her playing safe and/or trying to be something she's not.. a squeaky clean balladeer.
If she finishes lower than fourth or fifth this week (having put in a strong couple of performances) that would be a much bigger problem.

Her interviews do not come across that well on primetime ITV, I fully agree. I love her attitude and feistiness but these post-song interviews are the wrong time for it.

I suspect there might be a little work done on that by Cowell/Cole before next week... (and I'm convinced there will be a next week .)

So after 8 weeks, the viewers will suddenly decide to think "You know what, she's not a sulky, immature, self-obsessed diva
who's only thoughts about a CHARITY single was...i wish it could be my face only on the cover next time...

..she's actually quite nice" Laugh

Oh as if the rest of them wouldn't have been picking up the single thinking the same thing?
At least she's upfront and direct about it.

Anyone who wants to spend money on voting for the sweetest, most deferential, 'play by the rules' person in a TV talent show is never going to be voting for Cher. The seismic shift in her team's approach is that they just don't care about that now. The revised gameplan is and will remain impact and swagger.

As Squares points out, they went for two similarly fast and in your face numbers, rather than mix things up with a rock ballad or even something like 'numb'. I suspect that was to clear all the poison out of the system from last week (ie the John Lennon dirge followed by the pointless retread of 'Stay')

I hope she avoids B3 tonight but she might have to win a singoff again. She'll be far better prepared this time though, and Cowell will save her over most of the others if necessary.

i couldn't be bothered to read all this post as life is too short but why would you back someone who has drifted week by week and has had only 1 decent performance.she will most likely be gone tonight anyway as she comes across as a vile creature....imo
By:

Mmmm. I see your point AA.  The post-song interview is such an unnatural thing though... and Cher has always been profoundly bad at doing them.
The directness can sound abrasive when squeezed into such small soundbites. (The one after 'Girlfriend' was really painful!)

will she be singing "stay" again journeyman is she's in the sing off as it's the only decent performance of the whole competition......i've just read your original post and have decided you must be on a giant wind up as you keep arguing against the reasons you would maybe back her.

I'm a bit puzzled as to who Cher's fans are.  I can only assume it's senile old people who think she's hip and 'relevant'.

A "Fanbase" will vote for their favourite under any circumstances. Do you belive they switched to Wagner or just didn't bother?

Which makes them short of being a 'Fanbase'

Perhaps they were at a horse sale?

Agree fully with the headline of this topic!!!!

If people want to see the real Cher check out her Vlog's on Youtube, she comes across as a nice girl on them.

I understand why people may not like her in the minute she talks to Dermot, but she is put on the spot there and never really knows what to say. In the vlogs she is much more natural and sound out!

Truth is Cher doesn't need x factor. In fact if she's not careful she will lose credibility by showing she is prepared to be manipulated any which way for success.

It would have been better for her if she'd been "discovered" and then launched on an unsuspecting public ala lady gag or madonna.

Journey man,  you point out what ive been trying to tell people for the last 4 weeks.

People just get wraped up in the what the media tell them and sway away from the real facts that she is by far the best act on x factor.

Cher doesnt have a bad attitude...its just that shes made out that she has.

i've been taking all the top 3 market prices since week 2 and im happy that ive been taking all the 33s and 29s down to 22s that she currently is.

if Simon is going to make a success of cher then she has to be in the final 3 ...her main market is going to be the USA market and she aint going to make that market by not being in the final 3....so i suggest you do whats plainly obvious and hammer whats left at 20s ish and have a free bet after next week.

Good luck all
