Serena's career has been much elongated through her infrequent playing. No way she'd still be going at this level if she had been playing 16+ tournaments a year for 15 years.

Serena hasn't actually played over 16 tournaments in a year once in her career which is quite remarkable really. Mostly plays around 10.
Most players event the top players are generally trying to play around at least 16 a year. And you've had top players play many more. Woz for example has played 6 more tournaments than Serena in her career despite Serena being 9 years older. Kerber who was just number 1 is most playing over 20 tournaments every year (22 last year). |

In horse racing terms, SW has been well placed. She's fortunate to have played in modern times when she had way more say (control) in where and when she plays.
And lets not forget the weak as p1ss era she's played in compared to Steffi. The Williams sisters have turned tennis into a power sport and Serena is the most powerful player in women's history. But she doesn't possess a fraction of Steffi's racquet skills. It might be an old fashioned view, but I like to see racquet skills in tennis. Thats why Steffi is the GOAT. |
