I`m loving the bizarre claims by the seething losers that have filled these threads in the aftermath...

If everyone just gambled on live pics Betfair would have little or no liquidity.

Not my fault, it`s the scoreboard`s fault

If people only bet on visible matches, then they (Betfair)would make only a fraction of the money they make.

The papers are going to love this story..

must be more gems I`ve missed

Right now listen to Uncle Ash. Im going to tell ye all a wee story

On 1 August 1898, The Sportsman newspaper printed a racecard with runners and riders for that day's jumps meeting at Trodmore Hunt in Cornwall.

The following day, the paper ran the results of the races run at the meeting. A day after that, rival publication Sporting Life duly followed suit by providing readers with all details of the winners from the Trodmore contests.

Major bets on those races had been placed with several bookmakers in the London area and several of these layers were happy to pay out on the results as they appeared in The Sportsman.

Nothing terribly eye catching in all this, of course, until you discover that Trodmore races was all a sham! The meeting never took place, but instead was the concoction of a group of swindlers who pulled off a major coup.

Somehow, members of the Trodmore gang (their real identity was never discovered) had managed to persuade The Sportsman editor to include the Trodmore card in his paper. The gang then passed on results by wire that were subsequently included in the publication.

The conspirators got away with thousands of pounds in today's terms. And if it hadn't been for a misprint in Sporting Life's version of results, would have made off with even more.
Roll on 110 years later to the 8th of July 2008 a match was played between 2 tennis players.... well ye know the rest ;)

UMAGA - you cannot assume the logic people may have made at the time of betting. Sometimes I have seen better than expected odds, perhaps because of a delay in the scoreboard, or becasue an injury has occurred with that player etc.

If your sticking on a ton of cash at such short odds, then that is the risk you agree to when you press that submit button. You have formed the opinion that your selection is going to win.

I remember betting on Davydenko once, and he was a set and a break up, and basically cruising to victory, and I had slapped more money down. Got up, came back, and boom - I'd lost because the **** retired - everyone in the forum were celebrating getting free money.

Did I get my money back? Like **** did I, but the rule is very clear. Your responsible for your own bets.

Well Joe, they shouldnt be betting on tennis. Can't cater for what logic everyone uses when betting.

ash hight punter - Betfair should have held all payouts until they thought about the enormity of this issue. There are going to be alot of disgruntled people who need justification for them not making the moral judgement call on this, because if they had voided all bets, then no-one would have lost!
By:

UMAGA - i think you have your wires crossed. I put my bet down (regardless of size and odds) becasue I relied on a source that has been correct for me for 2 years. Now, this central resource, affecting 100's of sites was malfunctioning, no one was to suspect any different.
By:
UMAGA
When: 09 Jul 08 01:22
Joe - how do you know it malfunctioned? Also - its got nothing to do with Betfair.

I aint trying to argue with you, because I agree that Betfair should do the right thing and void the bets - but I made lots of comments during the match doubting the validity of the scores, whilst others were happy to post that they were piling on regardless.

joe,

What about the people who haven't made money over the last few years who felt that one day this would happen and wipe out all their profits.

If this is voided, can they be paid a bit please as they could never have lost

Not only were people mentioning from very early on in this thread that something may be amiss Jeff Tarango posted a thread earlier today clearly titled warning about trusting this very same scoreboard.

remember the colombian wta final last year?

Scoreboard had the wrong winner (Garbin) whilst I was watching Vinci lifting the trophy. They didnt void that - scoreboards have been wrong in the past and they will be wrong in the future - just a risk you take

curious ? 08 Jul 23:31

my concern is not the scoreboard being wrong. Its like in soccer when betfair loses its pictures it suspends the game. There was this one game where seville played someone, i forget who. But i picked over 2.5goals to trade in play. But suspended the entire in play match because it lost its pictures. If betfair suspends these games when the dont have live feed , then why do they put inplay tennis matches without live pictures??? all games where betfair can't keep an eye on should never go inplay.

In soccer they should not suspend the game when it loses its pictures either. It isn't the layer or backers fault that the mugs who punt get robbed. I'm just saying why protect those laying and backing on soccer , the people on tennis also should equally be protected in if it has or lost its pictures as well.

would someone comment on this , i maybe right or wrong?

In Soccer, it is in the rules that they suspend when a goal is scored among other things so if they lose pictures they won't be able to do this as they wouldn't know if a goal had been scored, hence suspending the whole thing in-play. That would be my take on why they do this for Soccer and not for tennis or for other sports.

There is one big difference here. The only available info for the match was the scoreboard, no pictures - nowhere. Which means that the only people with different information was the courtsiders, in the USA. (I thought they were not allowed to bet? ;) )

Maybe they were not betting but only relaying the info through. Last year, this tournament was televised at certain points so maybe someone working in the media had access to it even though most of us did not.

how do you know there were no pictures anywhere?

you sure no-one was watching?

the colombian game was only availably on citytv - a local colombian channel - no-one knew about it so would have assumed it wasnt available to watch anywhere

Go back and read the first few pages of this fred - you'll see lots of forumites gleefully piling in on what they thought was a rogue bot. No one had any problems with taking money off a punter who's software had let him/her down, they were actually laughing and joking about it.

Now that it seems the software malfunction was actually on the other side, everyone is demanding their money back. What blinding double standards.

What Jib said. Read the first few pages. Mugz was calling it straight away. I knew something wasn't right when I thought Isner went 0-30 down when serving and his odds dropped from 1.65 to sub 1.5 when he should have been about 1.9. That was enough of a clue to realise something wasn't right and I bailed. The market is NEVER wrong and if it looks too good to be true then it is.

I withdrew most of the money I had put on and won when bet was settled as an isner win. The it was reversed and I lost the rest.

Now BetFair have my account in the negative so any money I deposit will go straight to them.

So looks like I'll never be using Betfair again

so if you dont want to lose, dont bet fi.X.ed match.. like davydenko vassallo match.. it can be simple like that? no!

Surely this is a huge misrepresentation by Betfair.

They presented odds and a scoreboard that people relied on as an inducement. Any waiver of liability I don't think would stand up to scrutiny under the unfair contract terms act 1977.

Betfair should void this match. The fact that it wasn't done before settling is not the publics fault
By:
GranpaChook.

Betfair didn't present any odds. People did, and people took what they chose to take. They relied on a SB and unfortunatly it was wrong. Nothing really to do with Betfair.

The SB has everything to do with betfair as they displayed it as wrong and as betfair would know that people would rely on it then they should take responsibiltiy for its contents. Again any waiver of liability that people rely on it at their own risk wouldn't hold up in a business v consumer context

YOU RELY ON SCORE AND STATISTICS DATA TO PLACE BETS, YOU DO SO ENTIRELY AT YOUR OWN RISK. Betfair provides score and statistics data AS IS with no warranty as to the accuracy, completeness or timeliness of such data and accepts no responsibility for any loss (direct or indirect) suffered by you as a result of your reliance on it.

By:

Yes it may say that

but if you read the Unfair Contract Terms Act 1977

this clause may be nothing but window dressing to scare people away from pursuing a claim
By:

What amazes me is how many people assumed that the market was wrong and the sb was right. Anyone with any experience of Betfair at all knows that the market is never wrong for an entire match - it may get out of kilter from time to time, but it corrects itself pretty quickly.

Yet, as we can see from reading through this thread, punters continued to pile in even though they knew something was up. So, why should Betfair have to bail out these idiots who ignored the evidence that was blatantly before them all match?

The simple fact of the matter is you backed a guy in a tennis match. He lost, therefore you did. You don't bet on a scoreboard, you bet on the actual result and the fact that the market knew all the time what was really happening should have been enough to wake you up.

I don't know why they woid davy match. It was wrong imo, but many think it was the right thing to do. The very next day there was a similar match, only with vollandri...betfair did nothing.

The difference bewteen Isner match and davy match is easy.
