Hard to imagine Alastair Cook would be priced out with the rags if he achieved what he has in the 1970s...England v WI v Aussies was must see tv back then....now most people, like myself, wouldn't know what Alastair Cook even looks like.

I'd imagine at least one of the women's football team will be nominated now, no idea who mind, only watched two minutes of the tournament
Ticks a box for the BBC at least, anyway. May be a feminist campaign to vote for them but it's bloody tough to win from a team sport |
By:
Agree cnman. Having not watched anything much more than you though, I wouldn't know where to start either. If they win the tournament, they'll be a shoe-in for team of the year, and possibly coach of the year, and I'd say a key figure would be more than a worthy winner of the overall award.

Why so quiet on here. I've been on Froome from the start at about 30s. Now about 5/1. I don't get this McCoy thing, surely he cannae win it. Hamilton and KJT are my big worries. Wish they would shut up about the drugs thing but beginnning to think the more he gets questioned and the less solid evidence they have again the more it will look like a jealous witchhunt and his exemplary behaviour in the face of such relentless question will serve him well. Would love to know what price KJT is for world champ gold.
By:
mccoy could surely only win it if it was an exceptionally weak year with no outstanding achievements
long odds against surely with froome having got the tour sewn up, hamilton a likely winner and andy murray in with a great chance of leading britain to the davis cup pretty much singlehanded |
By:
I think the drug question hanging over TdF damages Froome greatly. Wiggins managed to win cos he was the first Brit in ages to win the TdF, followed it up with gold at the Olympics and he had the 'charisma' with all that Mod-father mallarkey & sitting on a throne outside Hampton Court Palace. Froome still a great trade if you took the 30s but major soubts over him winning SPOTY. Hamilton is damaged by winning it last year. That counts against him imho. It still needs a sportsperson to grab the public's imagination.

Froome To Secure Second Tour De France Title http://news.sky.com/story/1525230/froome-to-secure-second-tour-de-france- |
By:
Froome a massive lay. Cyclists have a massive mountain to climb when it comes to SPOTY and it takes something remarkable like Hoy or Wiggins to win over the voters. Besides there's absolutely no way SPOTY voters will back a cheat.
By:
Cyclists do not have a mountain to climb to win SPOTY, they have proved themselves very organised in the past, when it comes to getting the vote out.
There are questions on Frooms popularity and over cheating, on the other hand he can get some sympathy over Johnny foreigner spiting at him and throwing p1ss over him. He has at least put a score on the board. |
By:
Froome certainly ain't as popular as Wiggins with the common man, but is there way of measuring how popular he is among cycling circles, who have proven form of getting their sport over the line? I don't think he'll win, but as mach has said, Froome has set a mark and so I'd not be in a rush to bet against him.
By:
May partly depend if the cyclists attempt a concerted campaign online. This is what they did, very successfully, with Cavendish. Still feel, through no fault of his own, there is a toxic connection with TdF now which will hurt Froome's vote.
By:
froome is nowhere near as popular as cav with the lycra loons
By:
He's not British either. A big negative.
By:
Someone keen to back him. But it's just the classic spoty plunge . Give it a few weeks and attention will be all over athletics WC, Rugby wc, ashes, tennis, F1 etc etc
By:
Hamilton a cert for the title after yesterday's luck lol
Hammy would beat Froome in vote even having won last year |
By:
Can't believe Froome is still @ 4-1
2 tour de france wins still takes some doing; may not be as popular as Wiggins but 4-1 is generous odds for me |

Froome backers getting more worried the way the Ashes is going now

Special day but gonna be v v tough for any of root, broad or anderson to win when up against at least one other cricketer

Aye; noticed Froome has drifted again; looks an even better prospect now for VFM

...well played BB - what are you going to spend your winnings on?
By:
Do we envisage any athletes exploding into thsi market:
- Mo Farah - I would expect him to win at least one gold if not two. Tainted with doping accusations and has done poorly in previous years (that said they were strong years). - Ennis - won't win gold - forget. - KJT got approx a 30% chance of winning gold - could be a player. Great personality. - Rutherford - going for a grand slam. I've taken some of the 500s on here. Can't see any other gold medals but happy to be proven wrong. |
By:
Why so certain about Ennis, ML? I wouldn't have thought she would have gone to the worlds unless she thought she can win gold.
By:
I've got hefty bets on Jess at 25/1. She has a fantastic chance of winning gold, personally I think she beats KJT and the main threat is Brianne T-E. If she does happen to win gold, it will be a phenenomal story coming back after pregnancy and she has a very strong pedigree in this competition.

shortlist taking shape
Female Ennis Houghton Storey or Dujardin (mebbe both if there is a total blank to come) Male Froome Peaty Hamilton (if he wins) Murray (prolly done enough already) Mo (prolly done enough already) Root (behind Murray, should get in if the rugby draws a blank) then can only see Rugby, which could turn the whole event on its head and possibly Tyson Fury and possibly Rooney (although that's looking less likely with every passing match) other than that there's the World Gymnastics still to come which might provide a male finalist |
By:
I'd add Stuart Broad, clyde. Expect him to be England player of the series. His spell at Trent Bridge, stepping up in absence of Anderson was basically the key winning Ashes moment in series. Would expect both Root and Broad to make the list.
By:
No way 2 cricketers make the list after the year England have had. I'd lay 10/1 on that let alone evens
By:
If England or Wales win the Rugby World Cup and Hamilton wins F1, personally I don't see either making the cut. If Hamilton doesn't win and neither England or Wales make the final that would be the only way I could envisage it and I still don't think they'd both make it
By:
Eng regaining the Ashes… it doesn't get bigger than that. There have been 2 cricketers shortlisted before after a winning Ashes series. Root the outstanding batsman; Broad the outstanding bowler. Plenty of room for both on a shortlist of 10.
By:
lucy bronze might be the wimmins football nomination ?
there could be more than 12 nominations this year, imo ? |
By:
Agree that it could be Lucy Bronze instead of Steph
A win Against Australia, despite the hype Sky are attaching to it because they've lost the Champions League, won't cut the mustard when they were last effectively in the Cricket World Cup and a draw against the WI and NZ. You mentioned in your opening thread the Cricket World Cup as the big thing, not The Ashes. Neither has been outstanding, just good. Just good doesn't cut the mustard. |
By:
cricket WC nowhere the stature of an Ashes series. That OP was just plucking a couple of random WCs out
![]() |
By:
I can't see Rooney making the shortlist but Steph very likely will, despite the fact the footballers didn't win, as it helps fill female quota on list which is typical BBC.
Team of the year certainly an interesting scrap this year. |
