Wayne Rooney wouldn't make my shortlist of 100 names. 1000, and he'd still be lucky.
By:
if he breaks the scoring record next week there may be some fuss
By:
It's not your shortlist that counts Darlo. He'd make my shortlist if he broke the scoring record. I'd have a male footballer in every year as football is our national sport, is by far the most competitive sport in the world and I'd recognise it as such. But it's not my shortlist either. It's a competitive year this year so I think he'll struggle to make it, but there are still a couple of places up for grabs if the rugby draws a blank.
Certs Jess Mo Peaty Froome Almost Certs Murray Hamilton Female footballer Probables Rutherford Root Another female most likely for me the para Sarah Storey Possibles Numerous rugby players Gymnast Rooney boxer |
By:
charlotte dujardin cant be far off the shortlist
By:
There's not a cat in hell's chance of Rooney being anywhere near the shortlist.

Im suprised that nobody has mentioned this.
If England win or get to the final of the rugby world cup then Chris Robshaw can easily win this He is currently as big as 50-1 The rugby world cup ends on October 31 and SPOTY will be 6 weeks later. England could capture the nations hearts and as longs as England get ti the final Robshaw is simply massive value. Also England rugby team are 11-2 to win team of the year. |
By:
They would need to do more than get to the final imo, even if they win, why should he be the candidate?
Plus it's an ITV competition I'm not convinced ![]() |
By:
Robshaw is the captain and the public face of the team.
he is the man that would lift the trophy and his profile would be massive if they won it. massive value for me |
By:
...go for it bardo ~ there are plenty of worse bets
By:
ive not heard much about gareth bale for spoty, but in terms of what hes done for
welsh football he must be close to the shortlist too wales not qualified for football event since the 50s ? |
By:
would think england would have to win it for a rugby player to get it. getting to the final is not much more than par for a host nation
it's though it's a weak year either |

roll up roll up, plenty of free money left to lay on muzza ;)

subtlety don't work on tinternet, especially in darlo
By:
Ooops.
By:
what price when he wins dc for scotland then darlo?
By:
Great question. I don't think he would win it if GB wins the DC. But on the flip side it would be right up there with the greatest achievements in his career, albeit in a competition where it's very difficult to ascertain exactly how seriously some people take it.
By:
live on bbc, maybe he's past his best in gs's, so his last chance to win? scottish vote etc etc
should be short imo |
By:
great timing too

By:
a real blessing in disguise he got knocked out yday. would have been a monumental task coming straight from the final with virtually no break to the davis cup. as it is he's played a lot of tennis this year, looked well below his best in new york and will need every day of the week he's got off to recover. playing best of 5 on 3 successive days tough. hard to expect ward to produce another upset
the draw has completely fallen apart this year with djokovic, fed and wawrinka opting out at various stages and spain non runners at the moment but we did beat france who have the best strength in depth in world tennis. can't think of any nation winning it with only 1 singles player of any real class. usually the 2nd player would be top 50 at worst |
By:
Our only chance to win it?
I'm sure Argentina think the same, losing finalists 4 times in recent years apparently |
By:
Ward is on a real run of poor form, so will either take one of his very best performances or Murray to play and win three rubbers.
By:
Looks like Ward will be dropped to me
Muzza certain to have to play 3 matches anyway |

Great Britain's team to face Australia in the #DavisCup semifinals is Andy Murray, Kyle Edmund, Jamie Murray and Dom Inglot!
Australia's team travelling to Great Britain for the #DavisCup semifinal is Bernard Tomic, Sam Groth, Thanasi Kokkinakis and Lleyton Hewitt! |
By:
I thought they had 5, no?
By:
How do you win a tie?
Ties are played over three days. Each team can have up to four players but not all of them need to be used. There are two singles matches on the first day, a doubles match on the second and two more singles matches on the third day. The country to win the best of five matches wins the tie and goes through to the next round. The host country decides which surface the matches are played on. I've turned into Brushy's unpaid researcher ![]() |
By:
I've had better ones

By:
ta darlo, bear sacked again
By:
oh yeah certainly GB and belgium won't get another chance any time soon. belgium have even weaker singles options than us with steve darcis as their 2nd singles player
amazing really that argentina haven't won it before. always seem to produce more than their fair share of good players so will always be in with a shout you'd think. very tough though having to play away in both the semi and final whoever they play |
By:
Darlo is 100% wrong
A team can consist of 3 players and a playing captain or 4 players and a non playing captain Bear retains his position of non paid laccy for Brushy ![]() ![]() |
By:
I stand corrected - I blame poor commentators. Though I will debate being 100% wrong (4 players and non-playing captain equals the five I said).
![]() |
By:
5 includes captain, who can be non-playing or playing
100% wrong, you know what Alan Sugar would say ![]() And Brushy is even more of **** ![]() |

By:
think you can name up to 6 players at this stage hence GB naming ward and edmund but it has to be reduced to 4 before the draw
By:
They have announced the team

bring back john lloyd,
c,mon andy ! |
