that 1st Semi Final looks tough - how many qualify out of each semi? Surely a big gun ain't going to make it?
By:
10 go through from each semi, Clay. The good news is, despite it being a smaller field this year - 16 & 17 in each semi respectively - both semis are competitive enough for there to be some qualifying/non-qualifying value about, not to mention semi winner & top 3 betting.
By:
but they don't announce the Semi winner until after the final do they? I'm sure I bet Sweden to win a Semi last year and had no idea if they had won it or not
By:
That's right - they cannot reveal full results of semis until after the final because obviously this information would interfere with the final voting - you will see the semi-final results appear on the eurovision.tv site not long after the final on the Saturday night.

Have Belarus changed their song?
By:
From the original song, yes.
By:
I preferred their original song more, I must say. Was proper Eurovision

Sorry, sure this has been discussed earlier - but what's the thoughts on the producers picking running orders? Seems like madness and recipe for complaints to me.

This is a jolly long thread, and i haven't read all of it so apologies if this has been covered - Norway's entry seems like a solid bet to me. Nordic / Baltic countries tend to do well, young solo artist is another good stat. Only bad thing is that the winner tends to have done well the previous year (Norway finished last). The draw has a terrible bias too - most winners come from the last 10 to perform. Did i mention its a cracking tune too?!!!

On just the one listen I'm a big Norway man to. Denmark's pretty good, just seems a collage of lots of different Eurovision songs/themes to me and gets a bit messy, very skinny price and not interested at the minute. Ukraine a solid pick and got a weird thing for the Finland tune.
Moldova best of the ballads, Albania best of the rags Holland very jury friendly, lot will depend on how they present it on stage At the top of the market hated Germany, Sweden and Belarus (wondering if I've heard the right one) Be suprised if I can't get all 10 qualifiers in the second semi but the first looks a minefield |

Remains to be seen, stu, but certainly asking for trouble as there will be accusations of favouritism for those that get the advantageous later slots, & those put away with early slots will be aggrieved. Of course, inviting nations to pick randomly if they'll be in 1st or 2nd half of final partly compensates for this but even so, it's a poisoned chalice.

Denmark a horrid mishmash of irish flute and some geezers pretending to bash preponderous
massive drums...2/1?...not for me |

My initial reaction to the ESC picking the running order was sceptical but then I cast my mind back just two years and recalled how nearly every decent song (i.e. the ones with my money on them! Sweden, Estonia, Denmark, Bosnia + others I can't recall just now) was crammed in the first Ten and cancelled each other out.
Even Italy and France ended up next to each other and they were sort of similar i.e. non-pop. It left Azerbaijan with a nice run to the win but even they had similar sort of songs either side (Slovenia and Austria IIRC) Hopefully the organisers will play it as fair as they can and keep the genres as mixed throughout the show as they can (depends on who exactly qualifies in part.) To be honest, it's no different to BGT's method of lining up but hopefully they won't be quite as blatantly obvious with the way they line things up to ensure favourites do well. |

Denmark, Russia, Ukraine, followed by Holland. Wow. Wow wow wow. That's a tough stretch

Is there any empirical evidence that the position in the semis has an impact on who qualifies? Obviously it does in the final with one winner but with multi qualifiers? Has the market overreacted with some songs or does it do this every year?
By:
I've only done a rough study, but seems there is a bias in the semis still - earlier songs less likely to qualify though not impossible of course.
By:
Just looked myself and I'm not sure it does make a difference. I'm taking the position that it just gives better value on the ones I fancy to qualify.
By:
There is an effect overall on raw numbers - more have gone through from 2nd half slots vs 1st half.
By:
I guess it balances out with slightly less chance of qualifying but this reflected in better odds. Same with everything I suppose. Won't stop me I don't think as cream rises to the top.
By:
Think it also depends on songs surrounding you - an earlier song surrounded by tough opponents, or distinct style entries, more at risk IMO.
By:
Early-ish semi draw could often be the death knell for a song's chance, especially if it was positioned next to similar sounding songs. This SVT-decided running order supposedly gives every song the chance to stand out, but in reality the same rules apply & an early draw, especially around the 2,3,4,5 mark, or the midway section, is far from helpful for televote purposes compared to a draw among the last 4 or 5.

Russia next to Ukraine? Bit odd and similar?

I've not done any full scale analysis, but I've always thought pimp slot in the semi was a big boost.
That strange Lithuania rubbish made top 3 from pimp last year, Greece won from pimp the year before , Turkey the year before and the Icelandic rubbish made top 3 in the other semi. |
By:
Going further back the pattern continues.
You would have made a killing backing the pimp slot in each semi ew, for the last 5 years |

Any value in Romania 2nd semi in that case? But apparently everyone hates the entry...

By:
I was looking more at Serbia. Not too many people like it either, but it has plenty of friends in that semi.
Looking at Serbian history and the serbian diaspora, it isn't surprising that Austria always give Serbia plenty of points and Turkey neer give it any. No bookies with prices yet? |
By:
I might be mad but have taken the cash @ 13

Can back fair bit bigger than evens that Romania even qualify, and their voting allies not too shady either? But it's rubbish, lol

I've not jr. But I will.
Do we know which semis the automatic finalists are voting in? We could do with Germany, Sweden and France voting in the Serbian semi |
By:
25/1 on the HS. Or 20/1 now.
I agree jr. Worth a punt if you can get on. |
By:
If GB2's theory of juries voting with their c0cks has any validity then that could be worth a few more points for Serbia.
By:
UK, Sweden and Italy voting in semi 1; France, Germany & Spain in semi 2.
By:
Oh damn. Germany in particular would have been nice.
By:
Sweden and Italy not bad

Romania has a fair few friends, but is missing some of it's biggest, in Moldova, Serbia and Turkey.
The song makes me laugh. Which I guess could be a good thing in that it will make it stand out. |
