It wasn't letting old people die. It should have been carrying on as normal, realising that it was impossible to stop.
It was almost like half the country were expecting to live for ever, and it was the first time they realised they were mortal. That's when you need sensible heads, but the opposite happened. We allowed people to think death could be prevented by hiding. |
By:
But I think it is indicative of the mindset that now pervades. Money is limitless. Apparently. We have the luxury of funding someone's life as they pretend to be anxious.
By:
And I think a huge huge factor was the state itself wanted to hide. In full knowledge they had no risk of losing income and it was actually far better for them to be at home in their nice house for two years. There was no incentive for them to do anything else.
By:
You would be letting old people die, as there wasn't the infrastructure to treat them. That was the main reason for lockdown, to spread out the demand for hospital treatment. No lockdown would've been shorter and more deadly

The NHS does ordinarily put a price on a life. It was I believe pre COVID something like £20k per year saved or £40k per final year. The reason being resources are limited. That guideline got thrown out the window during COVID. I think it worked out being estimated as something like a multiple of 10 times the pre COVID cost, so £200,000 per year of life saved compared to the guideline of £20,000.

Another 500 or so happy sailors arrived today on our shores.
Can we send them all up to Gorton and Denton if the Greens win tomorrow ? |

2 Ronnies invaded the thread
Refuk must be worried. |

Well the Greens seem desperate to accommodate and look after all and sundry Donny, so only fair their MP's constituencies take our new arrivals wouldn't you agree ?
Unless you're offering County Durham up as an alternative..... |

Your post wasn't there when I posted Dixie.
I was commenting on others. Tory policy was to rent hotels in constituencies held by rivals. It really was a bit of a disaster. Get them processed, returned, or integrated and working. |

What you are talking about, people dying indirectly due to lack of NHS competency and or resources happens every single day. I'm not stating that they wilfully let people die. I'm stating that they try their best. Which allegedly happens now. Ambulances queuing, 8 hour A&E waits, staff shortages. But what they did was choose to shut down to make it easier and less risky for themselves. In the full knowledge that 10s of thousands would die as a result, just not in that immediate future. The appropriate phrase was keep calm and carry on. What they chose to do was scare everyone sh1tless. |

Fair enough Donny.
Would be nice if the French did a better job in the first place though. string - to be fair it was not dissimilar in Kent back in those days ! Talking of which, the well known poem Coal Not Dole was penned by the wife of a miner from our coal fields here, the last verse still rings true today : There’ll always be a happy hour For those with money, jobs and power; They’ll never realise the hurt They do to men they treat like dirt. |
By:
Ofc it happens every day. Resources are not limitless, as I've pointed out. It's fairly simple that lockdown allowed more people seriously ill to be treated in hospital. Otherwise they'd have to refuse treatment in some arbitary manner, based mostly on age I imagine. Turn off the breathing support for someone and give it to a new arrival, or refuse the new arrival the breathing support. Doctors would have to pick and choose who they would try and save. A very tough choice.
By:
In financial terms and long term life expectancy terms it would a choice that needed to be made, but ethically, morally and emotionally, would leave a huge mental burden for the doctors and families of the victims that were refused treatment.
One way of looking at it is if it was left to a referendum lockdown would have been even longer. So in that respect the government did well, other parties would have all had longer lockdowns. Short Termism is a huge reason why we are in such a mess. Read an article today about the floods of 1953 and how the Netherlands spent billions in today's money on infrastructure, and hasn't had flooding since, while the UK did nothing. |

Only the demented would vote for a far right populist party led by a beer swilling individual who is rarely if ever seen in his own Clacton on Sea constituency. I'll be disappointed if the good people of Gorton & Denton don't give Farage and his motley crew a resounding thumbs down.
By:
Not as demented as the Greens under their current leader or as incompetent as Labour and Conservatives under theirs.

Blakey must have been swilling one too many Tributes if he thinks Reform are far right
![]() But maybe now he's woken from his stupor, he could give us his critique of the populist far left Greens under their absolute whack job of a leader ? |
By:
They are far right.
They pretend they are not, their supporters claim not to be. But they are. |
By:
I thought we were past the stage the far right were embarrassed about being called the far right. They seem to revel in it online from what I can see.
By:
So Donny thinks up to 30% of the electorate are far right
![]() PoP - i imagine the true far right do revel in their infamy. But that will not include Reform nor the majority of their potential voters. |
By:
30% of electorate will not vote far right refuk, restore, advance etc.
They may get 30% of the 65% votes cast They are far right, Hitler got over 30% of votes cast didnt stop him being far right. |
By:
They are right of the Tory Party. But their popularity for the majority (imo) of their supporters is not the right nature of their politics, but their anti WOKE stance and tough stance on immigration.
By:
Hitler being anti WOKE, aye, lol.
By:
The furthest left party is the Green party (I agree with them on wealth taxes and the environment). The furthest right is Reform (I agree with them on their anti WOKE stance and being tough on immigration).
I don't personally see any of those policies I've mentioned being left or right issues myself. |

Far Left F I L T H

Lenin I presume was anti WOKE too, I'd imagine. It's not a left or right position.
By:
Left/right is obsolete, I've made that point for several years. Globalist vs anti-globalist. The old parties are all globalist (along with the greens)
By:
Plenty of old school lefties are anti-globalist, and would detest pretty much everything greens claim to stand for. But plenty of Tories would prefer greens to reform.
Hence we are where we are |

It’s always strange when the great criers of racism are also the ones who try to reduce people down to their nationality or race. The guy is supposedly a British citizen. |

Can someone tell me what woke is nowadays?
I don't really get it all. Obviously, there's a bit putsch among the right wing to take people's civil liberties away. That's started with trans people, but you're starting to see more and more mentions of gay people and what women's role should be. Is that woke? Are ramps and wide doors for disabled people woke? Is not giving a flying one what the number does in the privacy of their own home as long as they're not hurting anyone woke? It's tough to keep up with the dogma tbh. |
By:
You know it when you see it.
I've not watched The Apprentice for a few years, but I can absolutely guarantee you that the casting will be 'woke', without even looking. ie based on identity and not charisma / personality / business acumen. I stopped watching it as it went woke. It is actually far easier to point out something on legacy tv now that isn't woke. It's a short list. But it is ubiquitous now, so you could pick any number of examples on any day. |
By:
Most likely it will be representative of the united nations, and not Britain.
By:
It's interchangeable with champagne socialism depending
on what can be gained by the epithet. Anything nebulous enough to give deniability in case questioned. |
By:
24 Hours In Police Custody is a standout, ie not woke.
But even they put out a 'special' most recently that was woke. I genuinely hope that has not been lost as well. |
By:
You know it when you see it.
So, it's purely subjective? So I could see a ramp in front of a library and think that's perfectly normal to help people with wheelchairs get in, but another forumite would think it's woke? No wonder I'm struggling to keep up. |
