the damage was done when the CIA helped kick out the Soviets - but then didn't follow through to help rebuild the country - the Saudis then took over spreading their brand of Islam.

Has there ever been a lasting peace round there? Leave them to their medieval ways or get involved in changing them, you decide. The former is far more preferable imo.

it's a tribal country

don't think any central government has ever really controlled everywhere

communist reforms pissed off the rural conservatives, hence the civil war in the 80s and soviet intervention

taliban came close to controlling all of afghanistan but there was still oppostion (the northern allaince and Ahmad Shah Massoud)

US comes in and a new national government under Karzai was created, never had a chance

needed to get the anti-taliban local chiefs ("warlords") on board

They can always come and live in the UK if they don't like it under the Talban.

Brits tried to intervene a few times, was always messy

that whole region, including NW Frontier Province of Pakistan, isn't like a modern constitutional state that you can control from a faraway capital

It was the Soviets that ruined the country.

50 years ago the Mullahs were happy enough in rural areas while the cities were quite westernized. Trying to create an atheistic puppet state was what brought the jihad, which then consumed the urban areas too.

Rebuilding the country is what has just been tried. It could hardly have worked when the Russians left as the war was still going on.

of course the West has always just sat back and allowed the Saudis to spread their brand of Islam - just as long as the Kingdom didn't stop the flow of oil

what do Pakistan, Iran and Russia want?

Afghanistan is the worst single example of the dreadful consequences on the populace ( any populace ) of standard American failure of their foreign policy.  From Vietnam right through to today these bstards have been imposing their brutally  misconceived ideas of "democracy" ( and brutality ) on foreign sovereign states and then walking away, leaving them in rank misery.  Obama started off the walk outs and now this bumbling fool Biden is extending it.  Absolutely disgusting.  Every bereaved parent, wife or husband of a dead British trooper must be seething in anger and bitterness at their loss of their loved ones, in a war that simply couldn't, and wouldn't be won.  And rightly so.
Biden is a bstard with no care whatsoever for the mess he leaves behind and the brutal misery which will fill the vacuum!!

you don't understand what happened in Vietnam

the north was trying to take over the south

the US intervened to stop this happening

anti-war protesters forced Nixon to withdraw US troops

then the democrats in congress forced him to withdraw US air support and funding for the south vietnamese

By:

When: 07 Aug 21 22:25
no, you really don't

the south vietnamese fought tooth and nail to prevent the north taking over and were abandoned because of the democrats

Afghanistan is the perfect example of the idiom " Those who do not learn from history are condemned to repeat it. Victory in Afghanistan is unobtainable. If we had secure borders thanks to an efficient Border Force instead of the Border Farce that we've got, it wouldn't matter to us what happened in Afghanistan. Terrorist scum is landing on the Kent coast on a daily basis escorted in by British coastguards (guards? that's a joke) & the RNLI taxi service. The terrorists are already here, being housed & fed!

Korea, Bay Of Pigs, Vietnam, Grenada, Iraq ( just why we never ever found out ) and now Afghanistan.
A shambolic catalogue of failure, leaving behind trails of human misery, murder and assassination.
And there are most probably other atrocities we don't yet know about.
And all the while they have propped up Israel and Saudi Arabia.  How fcking obtuse is that?

They might as well invade them - they seem to have missed them out.  And you still fail to justify any of their war and belligerence they have imposed across the globe in the name of their "democracy".  I'm still waiting.

The involvement in Afghanistan although it's motives were far from pure had achieved a lot in terms of some kind of something resembling modernity and progress, many of the people clearly want this...inevitably the withdrawal was just the green light to those that not only wish to maintain a very old fashioned way of life but impose it on others regardless of their outlook...

you could argue the world looks away but how do you relentlessly involve here, you probably don't but never has their been a more signposted exit and a green light to extremism, something the west will feel at some point...

well you can't just bomb the f*** out of it without some kind of end game if you wish to retain any credibility as a beacon of the 'free world' and 'liberty', 'democracy' etc.. most of which we'd accept are largely hypocritical to begin with but in terms of it's relevance...presumably a base camp for Islam Extremist terrorism might be a start...
