But there is a precedent of sorts, donny.
Tim Farron exit mkt as Lib Dem leader was settled a month after his resignation speech, on the election of his successor. |
By:
In the role of tory leader if there is no other duty than to be pm and it is an nonsalaried position then i suppose May will be considered leader until someone replaces her despite her words.I am not prepared to bet which way this will be settled thou.
By:
She had to tell Brady in the meeting when she would step down as leader, and it appears she told him June 7th. It is none of Brady's business who Prime Minister is.
Neville Chamberlain was Tory leader during the battle of Britain, it's a separate matter. When Cameron resigned he did not say I resign on such and such date, just that he would stay until successor appointed. So the June 7th date seems significant to me. |
By:
"both resigned and remained as con party leader"
evidence? Cameron resigned and specifically said that he would remain PM with a view to the new leader being in place later that year. He didn't say remain leader. |
By:
People are pointing to Wiki which shows the exit date is the day they're replaced and not the day they resign https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leader_of_the_Conservative_Party_(UK)

By:
tobermory So the June 7th date seems significant to me. I'd have thought the only significance is that Trump's visit is scheduled on the 3rd June-(6th?) and that Friday's always the best day for a leaving party. Unlike Major when he threw his dummy out the pram, resigned from the leadership and left the postion vacant with a "back me or replace me" ultimatum, I'd imagine May will simply remain as leader during her 'notice' until a new leader is elected, much the same as every other leadership resignation. Unless they come out and specifically state the party leader postion is vacant on 7 June I can't see Betfair settling from that date. |
By:
Theresa said :
'So I am today announcing that I will resign as leader of the Conservative and Unionist Party on Friday 7 June so that a successor can be chosen.' Is that clear that June 7th is the exit date. not caretaker leader, no interim position exit June 7th. Theresa is staying on as PM until a new leader is chosen, she hasn't yet resigned from that post. So the party leader exit date is June 7th. Has anybody any actual evidence (not theory, just evidence) to the contrary. |
By:
Again from dave's link - it seems 7th June date is the only way to trigger the leadership contest to follow.
Ideally, Betfair rules will clarify this next time but the Tim Farron mkt offers some sort of precedent and, on balance, it seems fairer to rule at Betfair's discretion in favour of the practical date of May's exit:- the day Pickfords visit 10 Downing St.. |
By:
What you may think as fair is irrelevent. Betfair must go by what actually happens. There are also different rules and processes in different parties. For betting if you still get 3.0 on June as an exit, fill your boots.
By:
I really wouldn't, mate.

betfair must go by what actually happens .....yes of course.,

The liberal democrat constitution has this phrase
Upon election, the Leader shall hold office until death, incapacity or resignation or the completion of an election called under this Article. I can find no such phrase in the Conservative Party constitution. |
By:
You're going blind looking at the small-print, dave, but the bigger picture is that Theresa May has agreed to stay on until July.
Move on. |
By:
i'm not sure she has ub, thats the problem
its undefined at the moment, but i'm not sure it needs to be defined, except for punting purposes |
By:
Well, I'm sure the settlement of the Betfair mkt will be the first order of business for Theresa May and the '22.

UB you stated that the libdem election was a precedent - I simply pointed out why you were wrong again by looking at the correct sources. You have been unable to substantiate anything you have posted.

British Prime Minister David Cameron is to resign Wednesday, paving the way for Home Secretary Theresa May to take the reins. May was officially named Conservative Party leader and successor to Cameron "with immediate effect" Monday, said Graham Brady, chair of the 1922 Committee, a collection of Conservative members of Parliament key to electing the party leader. She will replace Cameron on Wednesday evening. |

From the respected PoliticsHome website :
June 7th Theresa May officially resigns as Conservative party leader, but will stay on as Prime Minister until a replacement is chosen. She said this morning: “I am today announcing that I will resign as leader of the Conservative and Unionist Party on Friday 7 June so that a successor can be chosen. I have agreed with the Party Chairman and with the Chairman of the 1922 Committee that the process for electing a new leader should begin in the following week. I have kept Her Majesty the Queen fully informed of my intentions, and I will continue to serve as her Prime Minister until the process has concluded.” Note the use of the word officially here and in the first line of the rules of the May Exit Date market "When will Theresa May officially cease to be leader of the Conservative Party? Free money!!! |

Go on then, post your bets, ta.

By:
they cant have a leadership election until she tenders her resignation
but tendering your resignation does not mean you will not be carrying out your duties at work until your replacement is found. (nor does it mean you will remain in place) you really need to look up definition of resign, resignation... |
By:
They can have one if she drops dead - you think she's still the leasder then?
By:
Cameron managed to trigger the election without giving a specific date.
There is no need for a precise timetable today but in my view we should aim to have a new prime minister in place by the start of the Conservative Party conference in October |
By:
The betting mkt *UK-PartyLeaders-ExitDates-TheresaMay
would blindside most players were it to be settled on June 7th. Rule wording is imperfect but, on balance, most fair-minded Betfarians favour settlement on Theresa May's *real* exit-date. |

1922 wanted a precise date of resignation from Mrs May due to pressure from party members and once they accept that resignation on the 7th June she will officially no longer be Leader of the Conservative party. There was no rush with Cameron, he went in his own time which is a situation not being afforded to poor Mrs May.
By:
simply dont know that is true or untrue based on what has been said.
that is your interpretation of it, and you can still get 2/1 you are correct. |

My only concern is that they decide to be nice (for a change) to her and ask her to stay on as party leader until we confirm a new one. However in a briefing document published by the House of Commons library this May it sounds like they need a resignation to trigger an election ...
The current rules for electing the leader of the Conservative Party were introduced in 1998. A leadership contest can be triggered in two ways: • If 15% of Conservative MPs write to the Chairman of the 1922 Committee saying they no longer have confidence in the leader of the Conservative Party, or • if the current leader resigns. |
By:
yes but look up definition of resign, resignation...
By:
Donny why didn't she resign on Friday?
By:
Either way you look at it, there is free money in this market. As soon as the rules are established, since we all know the date she resigns at that a successor will be found between Jul-Sep, the market is all but officially settled. We are now betting on what Betfair seems the rules of the market not the actual event of May no longer being leader of the Conservative party.
By:
why didnt she resign on friday...
it would be bad form to be actively holding tory elections during trumps state visit and d day commemorations, imo. |
By:
what do you think is going on on the election front right now?
By:
posturing
By:
donny is right. The June7 date, fwiw, is just to spare Trump/Queen embarrassment.
By:
isn't it bad form to posture during trump's visit and the d-day commemorations?

Is it a f-cking secret? Trump and the Queen don't know she's a walking corpse?
