I’ve no interest in panning him, as a jockey I respected him but after yesterday no more. I didn’t bet in the race but it seems that those who think it was ok were all on a winner so they make up excuses to ease their souls.

When a footballer goes down with a head or neck injury what happens? Utmost care is taken, that was severely lacking yesterday.

The horse extended its back so far the wrong way it’s impossible not to have not known it might not be right.

It looked horrible but I just dont believe any jockey would continue to ride if they thought the horse was injured

A definite "vested interest and viewpoint as the previous poster emphasised.
Several people had expressed the opinion the horse did it passing the winning post...for one the infamous Rico said so if I remember correctly

post where i said that ya silleekhúnt.

On ITV as they are replaying the last you can hear McCoy say in the background " He didn't do it here ...", can't make out the last word, a name I think. Townend seemingly had to keep him going quite rigourously towards the last("keep the revs up"as they say), and gave Gold Dancer half a dozen or so slaps down the neck in quick succession as he got close the the fence. I can see that the horse looked reluctant to put his rear right leg down on landing and that caused his backend to collapse imo.
So I think AP is probably correct and only Townend knows what he thought/felt before and after the last.

They looked like taps to keep the horse concentrated to me.

Layemall you’re right he did, was much more vigorous in doing so then he was on Impare, this horse jumped the third last out badly, Impare fell at the second last.

He maybe correct re the reason jockeys do this, and we have seen it thousands of times, but in this case I don't think concentration was the issue from the horses point of view, when you take into account how the horse landed (explained above).

Nobody will ever know if Townend felt he had gone wrong. Im sure if he knew it was as serious as it transpired he may have stopped.
But it is as clear as day that the horses action was gone after jumping the last for 100 yards, then seems to come back once Townend pulls the whip.

He did know the horse has sprawled badly. He did know the horse would almost certainly have been injured in some fashion. Just as he knew on El Fab. He also knew that the winning line wasn't too far away, and he had a good lead, so took the gamble.

Obviously these are split second decisions, my critique is of the two tier approach from the broadcasters and the authorities. RTV were leading the pile on to the amateur jockey in Fakenham. Townend doesn't have those excuses, in fact he is well known for pulling up when in with a winning chance lol. Fair enough if all of the RTV types though he was completely innocent and it's fine to carry on when the horse is likely injured when a grade 1 is on the plate. But they took the gaslighting approach.

3-wide on Salvator Mundi. The Donellys must be tearing their hairs out. Their good horses being let down by their trainers or jockeys eg Salvator Mundi and Lulamba.

The domination is pretty boring now. The rubicon has been crossed.

The national is the nadir writ large.

Winning the national used to be a once in a lifetime event, now one trainer is arriving at the elbow with 3 or 4 swinging on the steel.

Tell me Dela, I assume you watched most of the races today. If you didnt have a look at McMenamin and O'Briens winners again and the way they slapped the horses' neck several times before the last. Considering you seem to have put so much blame into this being the reason two of Townend's mounts made mistakes this week how come these other horses won today with their jockeys doing the same thing?
