I doubt those youngsters would be going home all starry eyed at seeing CH, isn't it one big pi55 up with horses racing in the background.
It would be interesting if we could fast forward forty years and see which of those youngsters had actually gone on to support the sport. I'm also surprised that those opposed to gambling haven't been all over this, objecting to exposing impressionable youngsters to betting. |

Good for NH racing if it can’t run imo……
Racecourse gallop on turf the Cheltenham, stop the circus…. |

nothing against the horse, thought it would get beat in any case but after all this bending backwards (increase stable capacity haha) I really hope it gets beat - little wonder some trainers are agitated, this preferential treatment for one of the old 'establishment' is sycophantic in extreme

Good for NH racing? It’s a flat race ffs. It’s only running there because they’re frightened it will break its neck in a NH race.

Good for NH racing? It’s a flat race ffs. It’s only running there because they’re frightened it will break its neck in a NH race. Trial it at home over timber, according to the ex stable rider it is working well…..then a proper racecourse gallop on turf… |

Henderson went to Eton. As we live in the UK it’s obvious he’s entitled to special treatment.

The BHA has approved a plan for Southwell to increase stable capacity, handing a boost to Constitution Hill's hopes of making his Flat debut at the track on Friday night.
The former Champion Hurdle hero is among 31 eligible entries for the $40,000 SBK Road To Cheltenham Novice Stakes over 1m4f, and his place in the final line-up was put in jeopardy on Sunday when he was placed 16th on the priority list for protection from elimination in a race with a safety limit of 12. If that remains the case come declaration time on Wednesday morning, Nicky Henderson and Michael Buckley will require four horses above Constitution Hill in the ballot list to come out in order to get a run. The safety limit for the race can be raised to 14 runners if stabling capacity allows, a prospect which looked bleak when 241 entries were received across the eight races, with one of the three handicaps which open the card almost certain to be divided. But the BHA have approved a plan for Southwel to enlarge stabling capacity from 108 to 110 boxes, and the extra two spots will be allocated to allow Constitution Hill's race to be run as a 14-runner contest. |

No way it doesn't get a run.
Definitely preferential treatment. Got into this sort of mess by giving it the prize money of a good group 3 race. No wonder a few trainers want to have a pop with these horses. Would have been interesting if Godolphin had a decent one they could have entered. That doesn't appear the case. If CH bolts in, wonder if they will keep it to the flat for the up coming season. |
By:
If the sole purpose of the race was to enable CH to get a run, it is a shame that no one could foresee the perhaps obvious jeopardy in throwing extra money at it.

You would have thought so, I would also have thought a maiden at Newcastle would have been a better choice.

nothing against the horse, thought it would get beat in any case by what? in true rico fashion - a horse!! I haven't looked at the field in any detail but my opinion more based on a horse being asked to do something completely different than he has before at an advanced age. |

Will not want a bad experience in the midfield with all the kick back so goes pillar to post should have 10lb in hand of that lot, will generate more questions than answers as we have come to expect with Henderson.

not menni all aged 1m4f maidens at newc Tom.

personally i feel it's about henderson having the strength to deal with the fall out after saying the words "we're going for the champion hurdle"

The race is called The Road To Cheltenham Novice Stakes. If it wins and doesn’t run at Cheltenham what’s the point? It seems to me the horse is being used, in the derogatory sense, for racing and betting to generate money and publicity. Same on Henderson and Buckley for letting one of the jumping greats come to this. An all weather race on a Friday booze up at a dog track. I’m disgusted.

If Nicky had kept his mouth shut and just entered in a 12 furlong race at the 5 day stage, he would have had his wish of a flat run without the ballyhoo.
By:
round course @ newky not floodlit so not unless a day meeting most races on straight track this time of year td
By:
There must have been one such race somewhere in the past month? And surely 10 furlongs would be enough to find out what state of mind the horse is in which is the main issue.
By:
Very true wonders, maybe one race at best on the round course.
Will now go, the round course at Newcastle would have been a better option, had there been a race to suit, this time of year. ![]() ![]() |

13 years ago Doncaster put a race on at Nicky’s request it didn’t end well
By:
darlan?
By:
That’s the one wonders it was a very sad Monday afternoon in February a decent crowd turned up as along with darlan we had a champion hurdle winner and a triumph hurdle winner
By:
Shame that as he was yet to be asked by McCoy.
By:
Must be losing my marbles nowadays as I have absolutely no recollection of Darlan's tragic fall
being at Doncaster - I would've been convinced that was the Fighting Fifth at Newcastle. There must be another McManus hurdler I'm getting mixed up with who capsized at the last in that race. |
By:
It as a long time ago but ekbalco was killed at Newcastle.
The Doncaster race was a one off it was put on as other fixtures had been lost and Nicky wanted a race putting on for those sort of horses so Doncaster obliged. |
By:
The jp horse killed at Newcastle was bleu et rouge
By:
Jim - I think it was something more well-known...and in my head it either the last or the penultimate flight.
I might be dreaming (or getting confused with Darlan) but it defo had McManus silks. |
By:
reading on X the only 2 horses currently not jocked up are daddy long legs and they say mullions never jocks up and will run, and a charlie Johnson horse who wasn't happy about the way this race came about

By:
Buveur Dair got beat when well odds on (2ND).
A splinter went through his foot, you thinking of that horse? |
By:
Doesn't mean anything 1TP. Rob Hornby is booked up for Secret Squirrel and that one definitely isn't running. Paul will do Hendo a favour and pull his Horse out (NAP)
By:
Penz - no.
When Buveur D'Air took a chunk of the last flight home with him with that splinter was it when he was beaten at longs odds-on ![]() |
By:
Jimnast - that was an awful day at Newcastle when Ekbalco died (1983) , echoes of Alverton with Jonjo cradling the poor horses head waiting for the inevitable
![]() Jonjo could have been at Cheltenham that day riding Pounentes to victory in the Mackeson but chose to go north instead. Two years later poor old Browne's Gazette suffered a heart attack in the Fighting Fifth, i remember some saying the race must be jinxed. |
