With 33 entered and a max of 14 to run, what are the qualifications for running/elimination at Southwell on Friday night?

Do flat debutants get first pickings?

In terms of which 14 horses might make the cut, BHA rules give first priority to "horses that have run in or completed no more than two Flat races and have been placed in the first four at least once in those races."

Second preference goes to "horses that have not run in a Flat race," meaning Constitution Hill is high up the list of candidates to be allowed a run.

Little to no chance he'll be balloted out. The sponsor will go bananas, and ITV4 absolutely distraught. I do not think he'll win either, probably a prep run for Cheltenham the following month.

He is number 16 on ballot so will probably get a run

I would assume they will make it happen to ensure a decent crowd.

In the current climate with prizemoney, £40,000 is good reason for many to want to roll the dice.

If the BHA were going to frame a race around one horse, they shouldn't have offered such a financial incentive.

Commercially negligent for trainers to avoid it, particularly on an otherwise ordinary Friday night card.

Also, even if he does get to run, he is switching codes and returning after setbacks. He is certainly not invincible. If he continues to run below peak, the race is suddenly wide open. Even if he performs to expectation and wins comfortably, the place money alone makes the risk worthwhile.

Far from undermining the race, strong opposition legitimises it. If no one took him on, it would be dismissed as a staged procession. If credible challengers line up, it becomes what it should be, a competitive contest for serious prize money.

Am I alone in not understanding the Racing Post's story over this today? Why has Sunday being mentioned in it? Wednesday is the decs day.

And. why will the race not divide into two for 14 runners each? Means C Hill is much more liekly to run.

BUT, this media attention over the horse is rather irrtating. As we know, three falls in its last 4 and a very poor run when it did complete. So, no evidence it retains its ability for quite some time now. Also, he has never un on the flat before, or on the AW.

Looks like a lay to me if it is very short!!

Not going to divide a £40000 grand race surely, cost too much.

I don't think a class 2 race can ever be divided

The Racing Post have now rewritten the story to reflect where Sunday came in it!

Me wonders if the phone lines between the various trainers who have entries and the BHA will be red hot between now and Wednesday to try to esnure C Hill is able to run!!!

Not certain this is the problem - if prize was lot lower - it would then attract a lot of dross

Could be miles out but around 115, difficult to asses.

there's a tiny pool of 4yo+ horses looking for an a/w novice over 12f in feb
the 40 bags has attracted horses that otherwise would have no intention of running

entry looks a lot more like a jumpers bumper
ie a mixed bag of abilities & a big entry with pent up demand for a run

I was thinking similar that flat horses rated in the 80s will likely be competitive

Will be a fascinating market if he runs. Plenty of us hoping to lay at very short odds.

Nicky could end up watching a Mullins horse bag a big prize while he looks around for another AW race for Constitution Hill. Hilarious.

Don't forget that the number of entries will reflect both the prize on offer AND the opportunity for all of the other trainers to deny CH a prep run so I can see 14 others being declared just to keep him out.

Not much reason to not declare unless there is an incentive.
