Good afternoon Guys,

Epsom Derby day, the race that in a bygone age was promoted as the best in the world, but is a shadow of it's former self, even though Oli and co at ITV do their best to big it up. The roll call of winners in recent years is a world apart from the likes of Sea Bird, Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Grundy and Shergar et all in the 60's/70's, but the sport has changed (and not all for the better). Breeders are more interested in 10f these days, in fact the French Derby was reduced in distance to 10.5f almost 20 years ago, but tradition being what it is in GB, there is no chance of this occurring at Epsom.

Much of the media interest this afternoon will evolve around one runner of course, City Of Troy, without question the best of the field as a 2 year old, in fact possibly the best since Frankel. I was a big fan last season and went over to Newmarket for his Dewhurst win, and again for the 2000 Guineas, but after a lifeless run in the latter, it has to be questionable if he has trained on.

Stall 1 is not a positive with 16 runners on this course, soft going will not suit (although the ground may not be) and he did have a lot of speed last season, so will 12f on a stiff, undulating Epsom track play to his strengths. Additionally, better paddock judges than me are on record stating he hasn't grown much since last year, at least in girth, so as a consequence i will not be backing him today.

If there is a positive for backers who are keeping the faith, it's not a particularly strong field, but ignoring 2 year old form, i can't see any supportive reasons for backing him, certainly at the current levels of 3/1. I've already laid at 4.0 and 4.2, albeit not significantly. If i was asked to give a selection as a charity bet, i would plump for Ancient Wisdom. Of course he could hose-up and AOB will be lauded accordingly, but i have my doubts.

Elsewhere, in the G3 Princess Elizabeth Stakes (2.00) i will be laying Roaring Lion, even allowing for the drop in class. She often beats herself by hanging and has never won a race higher than listed class, over a year ago. I'm not sure 8.5f is her trip either.

I wasn't overly enamoured with the afternoon cards anywhere really, but i thought Scariff was another to be laid at Musselburgh (5.20). Lightly raced for a 6 year old, but a 11 race maiden, 8 of them on turf. Finished 3rd at Beverley LTO, but only 3 days ago, up in class (slightly) and on sharp course.

Changing topic, my syndicate horse Salamanca Lad is entered at Ripon on Wednesday (21.00) and i think he could run, although we have other options a bit later. I will not be travelling over though, i have a busy June as it is, although Royal Ascot on the Tuesday is a possible.

Good luck and have a nice Saturday all.

Good morning Guys,

I've been betting on horses for more years than i care to remember; the likes of Lester, Scobie, Vincent and Noel are not alien names to me by any means. I love the sport and everything about it, not only from a gambling perspective, in fact, i've stated on here before i'm an aerospace engineer first and huge racing fan a close second, but every now and again, a result transpires to make fools of punters, yesterdays Epsom Derby was one such occasion, at least in my case.

I was all over City Of Troy last season backing him AP (small) for the 2000 Guineas after his debut win at the Curragh and significantly higher stakes in the Superlative and Dewhurst, specially the latter race. In my eyes, he was probably the best 2 year old since Frankel so i was looking forward to this season and was as confident as i could be at Newmarket last month. I left the course disappointed and like many pundits and punters thought maybe he hadn't trained on, even though Auguste Rodin was a similar scenario last season, but go further back in time, Air Force Blue and One Cool Cat were both well beaten in the same race as short price AOB favourites. The former never won again and the latter only won once since.

As mentioned yesterday, i laid COT (albeit small stakes) but watching him win after showing his customary turn of foot, i had mixed feelings oddly enough, content i had seen a very good winner, but on the other hand, gutted that i lost faith and in one respect it left a bad taste after Newmarket. Having said that, no sour grapes on my part, even if it appears so, and i'm not suggesting anything shady occurred; maybe Aiden is correct and he was simply undercooked on Guineas day. In hindsight, the best 3/1 bet of the year, but easy to say post race. C'est la vie, it's racing.

On to this afternoon, Hamilton is the better meeting of those in GB/Ireland, but for quality the Prix du Jockey Club card at Chantilly takes pride of place with several trainers and jockeys crossing the channel including Messrs O'Brien and Moore. Connections of Diego Velazquez will be painting the city Red (pun intended) if he wins to make it a Derby double, but i prefer the Andre Fabre trained Alcantor who finished almost alongside him in the French 2000 Guineas. He was beaten in the Craven prior to this, but may have needed the race and the step up to 10.5f is a positive (sire won this race 9 years old). Finished 0.5L behind Sunway (reopposes) in the G1 Prix Criterium International over 8f last season. Low numbers are an advantage at Chantilly and stall 7 is fine assuming he's prominent enough early and settles better. A best priced 11/1 with the books and currently 13.50 on here, i was surprised he's over 3 times the price of DV. I will play small win and 3/TBP.

Stewart

Not really as i didn't have a bet in the Oaks, although i did think she would win. Of course i was disappointed with COT and YY in both the GB Guineas as i had double figures odds AP, so my TV could have taken flight if both had won in recent days. Laugh

I haven't backed much recently anyway, my last decent bet was Rosallion in the Irish 2000. The only AP bet i have open is Iga Swiatek in the Womens French Tennis Open, backed at 1.65 and 1.68, but surprisingly enough is currently 1.71, possible due to her hard fought win against Naomi Osaka on Wednesday, although she won easily enough on Friday. She plays later this morning.

Changing topic completely, regular readers are aware i live in Linköping/Sweden, the home of Saab Aerospace where i was a consultant for over 21 years (in total) and i occasionally post snippets of information as it appears i'm not the only aircraft geek on here.

It was announced a few days ago that Saab are donating 2 x ASC890 AEW&C (Airborne Early Warning and Control) aircraft to Ukraine. Currently in service with the Swedish RAF, but they will be replaced by it's larger counterpart (Saab Global Erieye) by 2027. The 1.16 billion euros military aid package also includes AIM-120 advanced medium range air-to-air missiles, although these are not carried by the AEW&C aircraft. I did a lot of work on these 2 aircraft about 15 years ago, something i'm very proud of; it's not impossible i could return to Saab in future when my stint in Germany is finished.

Good luck and have a nice Sunday all.

Good evening Andrew hope you're well. I managed a bet on COT mainly as I had been on him in the 2000. One bit of advice, if you have fancied a horse before always put a saver on next time. WE don't know the reasons horses don't run to form in a particular race. For what it's worth I believe Aiden knew COT was not a miler but the 2000 gns is a good race to start as last year and I think the horse will go on to be one of the best. I heard the news report about the planes going to Ukraine but was not aware it was Saab who were donating. I'm sure the report said it was the Swedish government. Anyway good news as that war has to be won.

Good afternoon Guys,

Thank you for the posts.

Tommy/Hayden

I'm often willing to forgive a horse a poor run, or even one when it ran well, but didn't win, Blue Rose Cen a typical example after Goodwood last year as i knew she was a very good filly and i backed her again on Arc day when she showed her true form (may have been unlucky previously anyway).

As for COT, i've had my fingers burned on a few of AOB's 3 year-olds in bygone years, so i guess it was always in my mind. The small loss (laid) was not a big deal at all, i was gutted that i lost faith in the horse when i was singing how good he was from the rooftops after the Dewhurst. I messed up, simple as that, but after watching him win on Saturday, i have to agree he could turn out to be very good, so maybe my faith in the horse is restored, but Aidan owes me. Wink

With respect to donating AEW&C aircraft to Ukraine, you are correct, well more correct than i posted, but i have Saab Aerospace running through my veins and should have worded it better. It was actually an agreement between the Swedish Government, the RAF, together with the FMV and Saab who are the type certificate holder and responsible for after delivery service, product support etc whoever owns the aircraft. To be honest, i suspect it was the Swedish RAF that suggested it because they will get the well respected and more modern Saab Global Eye (my profile photo) before 2027 with much more advanced AEW&C surveillance systems.

Let's hope the Saab AEW make a difference over there, but of course it's all surveillance, not a killing machine like the their Gripen NG.

The aircraft is an old 340 platform based on the commercial turbo-prop (many of them are still flying) but modified extensively, externally and internally. The electronic systems onboard are modern though, but bear no comparison to the larger Saab Global Eye that has more than one radar system. The US were pissed off that Dubai Air Force purchased the latter, quite a coup for Saab, and previous 2000 AEW&C variants are also in service with Pakistan and Saudi Air Forces.

Enough of aerospace otherwise i will not stop typing. At Longchamp yesterday, we saw a contender for the Arc in Look De Vega who showed a turn of foot akin to COT on Saturday, winning impressively, quite possibly the best middle distance 3 year-old filly in Europe. Having said that, if anyone has access to French VR's, watch the following race (G3 Prix Du Royaumont) won by Aventure who was even more impressive, winning by 7L, easing up with Maxime showboating for the crowd. One to follow next time out wherever she runs and also has an Arc entry.

Closer to home, my syndicate horse Salamanca Lad is declared at Ripon on Wednesday (21.00) with Clifford Lee on board. David Egan was the original choice, but he's off to the Curragh. I will not be going over to watch him on this occasion, Ripon is the 'new world' to a born and bred Cornish guy, i'm not even sure i'm allowed that far North in England. Wink

In the French Open Womens tennis, the 1.71 odds on Iga Swiatek were quickly taken after an incredible 40 minute 6-0 6-0 win yesterday. Her next game (tomorrow) will offer more of a challenge as she plays the no 5 seed Marketa Vondrousova, the current Wimbledon champion, but i expect her to win.

Good luck and have a nice Monday all.

Think the market had a wobble with Swaitek after viewing the battle with Osaka Andrew but i'd prefer to accept it was as much Osaka turning back the clock as any under performance from Swaitek , market certainly correct itself after the latest demolition job.
That's what the stats say anyway as Osaka won the ace battle 8-0 , won both the 1st serve stats and also was 12/15 break points saved so an inspired Osaka performance in my eyes , so Swaitek clearly will take the beating as the odds reflect.

Thanks Andrew for the info on the radar surveillance planes.I was intrigued with the two comparisons so went to Google.
Correct me if I'm wrong but the SAAB 340 is quite old and turboprop and you'r correct still flying commercially. Loganair use them into Glasgow still. I saw one yesterday.Hope they can do a job for Ukraine.

Evening Tommy,

Correct, the 340 is an old airframe, in fact it was flying before my first stint at Saab to work on initial conception of the 2000 in August 1989. The latter aircraft is larger, but uses the same centre fuselage (in principle) albeit with a plug forward and aft of the wing, also increased in surface area to provide more lift as the ceiling height is higher.

Many aircraft are derivatives of previous design these days, few are completely new, the B737 is a typical example, although not so the A380. Much of the reasoning is a significantly reduced design program lead time and the certification process based on 'Grandfather rights' (basically using the previous design as 'similarity') that can reduce it by a couple of years, although there is a downside to this as the B737-MAX program has proven.

Turbo-props are often used in special mission aircraft, in fact the US Navy actually use an old Lockheed Electra as the platform for their P3 surveillance aircraft and that was flying before the Beatles had a hit.

Loganair have been a customer of Saab for many years and i think British Airways are linked with the same airline; maybe code-sharing ?.

A bit of trivia with respect to Loganair, they operate the worlds shortest scheduled commercial flight that is often around no more than 90 seconds and the record is less than a minute, although not with the Saab 340. It runs between a couple of Scottish Islands, but don't ask me which ones.

Evening Hayden,

I wasn't aware of the Swiatek/Osaka result until i received a message from a friend, although i watched snippets of the VR later.

As you intimated, Osaka raised her game big time, maybe the period she was away due to motherhood changed her outlook on the game, she suffered from mental health issues in the past as i'm sure you know. Irrespective of this, she still won 4 grand slams and at only 26 years old, if she's conquered her fears, could win another.

As for Swiatek, very good on clay and superb at RG where the surface suits her, she's always difficult to beat there, just as Nadal was.

Evening Andrew. Thanks for your knowledge regarding the SAAB planes. I should point out that I am in no way qualified in aircraft engineering but do understand the vast majority of what you are saying. I was a Joiner to trade but spent the final 35 years of my working life as a Site Manager building houses.I have heard of the shortest flight you mentioned and one of my wife's friends used it about a month ago.The friend is a School Inspector and travels to all parts of Scotland in her job. The aircraft used on the flight is a Britten-Norman Islander. The flight is from Westray to Papa Westray in the Orkney Islands. I can't do links but if you type in 'Shortest Flight In The World' you can see the full flight courtesy of The Scotsman Newspaper.

Good evening Guys,

Our syndicate horse, Salamanca Lad runs at Ripon this evening (21.00) and a few of the team are already there. Judging by the photos we received it looks a nice course, but i've never been. It was too much travelling for me and a mid-week as well, but i will watch the race online.

As for his chances this evening, he can be forgiven for his run at Goodwood (form is working out well, although he was well beaten) the conditions were heavy, but at least he's won in tonight's class before. Ripon is one of those 'horse for courses' track, it suits those up with the pace and we're hoping a first time tongue tie works.

Dan (Kübler) sent us a detailed verbal summary of the field via WhatsApp, but out of respect for the team i can't post the content here of course. I sent an email to another poster earlier and mentioned if i had to give an unbiased view i thought 3rd or 4th place was doable. Personally, if he finished down the field from 4th, i would be a little disappointed, but it is racing.

Someone is backing him, a couple of books were 20/1 early morning (this was a rick) although the then favourite is now a NR, taking a fair chunk out of the market on here. It certainly wasn't me.

Changing sport to tennis, the tennis Gods may be favouring Iga Swiatek, my AP bet for the French Women's Tennis Open. Since she almost lost last week, has won 6-0 6-0 and 6-0 6-2 and the number 2 and 4 seeds were beaten earlier. Plays in the semi-final tomorrow and is currently 1.28 to win outright.

Good luck and have a nice evening all.

Tommy

Good morning Guys,

Many thanks for the posts, appreciated as always.

My syndicate horse Salamanca Lad (9/1) ran well to finish 3rd at Ripon on Wednesday evening, beaten just over a length, and 3L clear of the 4th after being a bit keen early; but for a brief moment i actually thought he might win, as did a few of the team on course. Much improved from Goodwood, although this was more or less expected and the first time tongue tie may have made a difference. He ran to a RPR of 67 and also a fastest TS in his short career, so a promising run.

It's possible he could be running again soon, even as early as next weekend, but more on this when i know. Hopefully the handicapper leaves his mark unchanged; looking at the result with the front two, conceding 4lb and 5lb respectively, i think he may, but it's a coin toss if he adds a pound on Tuesday and probably dependant on how he gets out of bed.

I haven't had chance to look at the GB/Irish cards today, but i went through the Longchamp meeting last night. One i will be backing is Zarir in the Prix La Coupe (4.00) currently trading around 2.4 on here, although liability is often poor for non-Arc races early morning. Prior to his previous run, had never ran in a group race of any class, but was only just touched off by Haya Sark who is a half-decent yardstick in the G1 Prix Ganay, form that was franked by the G1 Prix d'Ispahan). Rated 114 (converted) so lower than Al Hakeem (121) who finished 4th in the 2022 Arc, but has only raced once since. Not the best of draws in 7, but i expect him to be prominent and stay on to win.

More group racing in Germany, Sweden and Italy where Luke Morris and Sylvestre De Souza ride, but i wasn't interested in any of these meetings.

Hayden

Thanks. As you stated, different class and almost unbeatable at RG, similar to Nadal in previous years. Luck was on her side with seeds 2 and 4 going out on Wednesday, but i don't think it would have mattered who she played. An earlier match with Osaka was a wake-up call and there were only 2 occasions thereafter when her opponent won 3 games in a set. The RG surface clearly suits her style of play, much better than the faster grass at Wimbledon, this is supported by the fact she only hit 7 aces in 7 matches and only 1 in the previous 3.

I wouldn't back her at Wimbledon, although her class will probably see her through to the 1/4 final.

Iga's 4 French titles puts her in joint 3rd place in the open era, and the tournament record of 7 wins held by Chris Evert is certainly within her grasp in years to come. Nadal was 19 years old when he won his first of 14 titles there, Iga was the same age when she won her first in 2020.

Start saving for an AP post bet in 2025. Wink

Bristol Caravans

I can't comment on Cologne, i've never been, but i asked local friends and the consensus was it's a nice city for a weekend, the Cathedral being one of the main attractions and a must visit; apparently it's the world tallest twin spired church. They also advised a Rhine river cruise, but maybe you don't have the time. Night life is good and could be crowded due to the Euro 2024 football tournament, in fact there will be a fan zone at the racecourse on Friday evening for the opening match against Switzerland.

As for German horse racing, i don't follow it as much as French and would only recognise the group class runners, i wouldn't have a clue about handicaps to be honest. The big race at Cologne on Sunday is the G2 Union Rennen for 3 year olds over 2200 metres; a trial for the Derby at Hamburg in July, so the closest race type in England would be the Dante. Looking at the entries, no runners from our shores.

Cologne is a right handed, galloping track, basically flat (like most over here) with a 2.5f run-in. Low number draws are favoured in the sprints.

Top trainers in Germany are Schiergen, Wöhler, Krug and Grewe, and as for jockeys, Starke and Murzabayev although the latter often rides in France. Also keep a look out for Leon Wolff who has been champion apprentice several times.

I can take a look at the final declarations later in the week and get back to you, but i wouldn't class myself as an expert on the racing here by any means.

Good luck and have a nice Sunday all.

Maybe more later if i see a potential lay selection.

Can't help but think Bluelight Bay in the 2.05 at Sandown is an outstanding bet at 33/1 e/w first 5. Won as a two year old on G/F in June, won as a three year old in June also on G/F and is now down to 1lb below that winning mark and we are in June! I would have backed this at 16/1, so 33/1 is a great value bet imo.

Good afternoon Guys,

Trusty, thank you for your EW selection and good luck.

A short post as i'm in Linköping and meeting up with friends at 14.30, football in one of the Sportsbars and a beer or three.

I wasn't enamoured with the racing today, but it's typical for the weekend before RA, so not unexpected. I will only be having a fun EW bet in the York Sprint, not exactly an easy race to find a winner, but Tropical Island is a tentative selection. Winner of 2 from 5 as a youngster and should have been 3. A winner over CD in his penultimate run and excuses for his last run in listed class, again over CD, where he boiled over in the preliminairies and was slowly away, but still ran well enough to finish 4th. Hasn't run since October, so fitness on trust, although he own on debut last season.

Currently 20 on here and 4.6 for 4/TBP.

Good luck and have a nice Saturday all

When: 16 Jun 24 09:56
Good morning Guys,

Another short post as i'm off to Stockholm for the day and the weather is good.

My tentative EW selection yesterday Tropical Island (16/1) ran well, but just out of the money in 6th, beaten 0.5L for 4th (1.04 IR for 4/TBP). Led at the 1f pole and i actually thought she was going to win, but maybe lack of a run told late on. She could be worth a look next time out, more so if over 5f.

The only race i'm really interested in this afternoon is the Prix Diane at Chantilly (3.05). I'm hoping Aventure wins or runs well at least, i mentioned this one after her previous race when she couldn't have won any easier with Maxime Guyon showboating to the crowd in the final 100 metres. Not the best of draws in 10 and she steps down in trip to 10.5f, so not ideal, but i've already backed her for the Arc. I may have a few tenners on this afternoon, but to be honest will do well to win. She may not be the next Blue Rose Cen, but is certainly decent; watch her finish strongly late on.

Good luck and have a nice Sunday all.

Bristol County Caravans

Hope you're enjoying Cologne and German beer Wink As for the racing there's actually 2 group races this afternoon with the G2 Grosser Preis Der Badischen Wirtschaft (2.00) rerouted from the Baden-Baden meeting that was cancelled recently. Lordano is going for a 5-timer and will probably be favourite, but doesn't have a lot in hand of a rival in Assistant who was only beaten a neck over 12f on course and is 2lb better off. The drop in trip favours the favourite, but it's not so clear cut and i think it's an open race anyway. Fantastic Moon is my idea of the winner, he has a touch of class (only beaten 6L in the Arc) i saw him run in München when i went to back Nations Pride.

The locals big race is the G2 Union-Rennen (3.05) Germanys oldest race and similar to our Dante, a trial for the Derby. I like the lightly raced Alleno and i would be more hopeful of this one than Fantastic Moon, at bigger odds as well. Another one who raced at München in the Bavarian Classic recently where he finished runner-up to Wilko and in front of Winterbraum, both decent 3 year olds. The latter has since won another Derby trial, easily beating Any Moon who runs today.

In a nutshell :

Back Fantastic Moon (2.00) to win and Alleno (3.05) EW
Lay Lordano (2.00)

Bear in mind these are simply my selections and unless i was at the course, i wouldn't back them. I don't follow German racing as much as the French.

Good luck

Fixture Note

After Race 1, the Going was changed to Good to Soft (from Good to Firm on the Round course, Good to Firm, Good in places on the Sprint).

Bluelight Bay needs Good/Firm, how unlucky that the heavens opened between 1.30 and 2.00; I suspect that the CoC had probably put on 5mm and then the rain on top screwed the bet. Let's see if she can bring him back out in a couple of weeks on G/F.

Very successful trip to Germany guys, the football and transport around the area was excellent, trains through the night, regular and on time, oh for that here. Dortmund was great and made even more special by the very passionate Albanian fans. Just a 30 minute walk from the station to the iconic stadium, no trouble and quite a good game.
On to Sunday, 6 of us went racing, really nice course for viewing and amenities. Yes we were all on Fantastic Moon as everyone in the stand could hear as we cheered it home then re invested on Alleno but for the win and not the place, another 50yds and it was his for the win I think.
Last night 4 went to Gelsenkirchen for the match to see an England win.
Cologne is a very nice City for a visit and the number of big clubs in a 45 minute distance is amazing.

Thanks for the info AIS and when asked who gave me the tip I said 'a lad in Sweden who was from the Chessels.

Cheers bcc.

Good afternoon Guys,

Many thanks for the posts.

The last day of Royal Ascot and although it's my favourite GB flat festival i think it's been a little underwhelming this year, although Rosallion, Inisherin and Calandagan were the highlights from a quality perspective, albeit not financially in my case. It could have been worse though, our syndicate horse Salamanca Lad was entered at Salisbury last Sunday (wasn't declared) and i did think about coming over to watch him and include RA on the Tuesday. If i had, it could have been an expensive trip because results wouldn't have gone my way, 2 days away from the office, flights, hotel and the usual expenses etc. I lost on the SJP anyway, albeit not heavy, but i almost feel i won. Wink

On to this afternoon and like the previous 4 days it looks a tricky card and win bets will be few, if any, but i'm laying a couple of runners, one at Ascot. The first is Continuous in the Hardwicke (3.05) who is short enough in the betting at 3.10, even allowing for him being the class runner in the field. Hasn't raced since the Arc, all 4 wins have come in August or September, and although it's not a top quality G2 field, at least they have had a run. A risky lay, but i don't think he wins.

I was going to put up Haatem in the Jersey (4.25) as another lay selection, but it's drifted this morning, so i will replace it with Morcar in the opener at Lingfield (6.00). Regressing in the ratings recently and finished 0.75L behind another rival in Charlie's Choice over CD LTO who is a lb worse off, but has a better profile. Irrespective of these two, it looks a trappy handicap where any of the field could win.

Good luck and have a nice Saturday all.

Thanks for the ttt (a sacrilege it was on p3 Wink).

I don't put up selections from Germany so often, simply because BF don't cover the meetings (i can't comment if the purple site do) although most of the high street books take bets from the major courses. When i do post them, they are generally GB/French runners that are racing at München and i've gone to the course. I didn't back the two i put up.

Good to read you all had a great time in Cologne, although one thing surprised me, your comment about trains running on time. Not sure if you meant long-distance or local, but if i had to pick one negative here, at least in München, it would be the S8 S-Bahn (metro) service that i use often, abysmal doesn't even come close and my German friends would agree.

As for 'from the Chessels', not exactly. Cornish born and bred (11+ years) but lived on the same name street when my dad was working at BAC/Filton. I love the city, irrespective of some negative comments on here, my last visit was as recently as Christmas.
