Hope you enjoyed your first visit to Chelmsford Andrew, i dare say a tad disappointed with the run of your horse, and as i thought before first run of season doesn't look like will stay 10f on breeding may be best distance over 7fs but time will tell.
Best of luck going forward, happy to be proved wrong Andrew.

Hopefully will go down a pound or two in the handicap and you move on to the next race. Despite what many think, it's tough to win any race. I certainly wouldn't put it down as a disappointing run. I'm sure they will find a race for him

Good evening Guys,

Many thanks for the Salamanca Lad good luck posts, much appreciated, i know a few of the others will have seen them as well.

On one hand, a little disappointing to finish 3rd last night, although most of us would have taken a 0.5L beating by a 2's on favourite pre-race. It was always going to be difficult giving away the weight to one going for a 4-timer, but after digesting the race and discussing with Dan Kübler and Jack Mitchell later, we took a few positives. Jack said he didn't really want to be in front, it was a slow pace, a small field, the track was riding deep, but he stayed on. I don't think many of us considered the Johnston horse, but it's a difficult stable to read anyway.

As The Dealer alluded to, the handicapper may drop us a lb, maybe even 2, and we have 3rd and 4th place money in a couple of runs so date as mentioned by Penzance.

For those that have never been to Chelmsford, it's an odd configuration with the stand situated between the 2 straights, so if you want to see the start and finish, you need to walk through it. Only 3 bookmakers outside (Gary Wiltshire was in the owners) and there wasn't much of an atmosphere, but a Thursday evening, overcast weather and a less than inspiring card.

On a positive note, Dan joined us for dinner in the owners area and we may change a couple of things in his next race, that will be sooner rather than later, but out of respect for the team, i can't post these plans yet of course.

Irrespective of the race result, i had a fun evening, first time at Chelmsford (only the 2nd AW course i've visited) good company as always, an owners experience and met with Dan and Jack for the first time. From a betting perspective, i didn't lose, as mentioned yesterday i was backing Golden Ace (Cheltenham) to win my stake and the only other bet i had on course all evening was a fun one on Cogsworth in the 20.00 (2nd, beaten a neck).

My time in GB was limited, i'm currently in Sweden (arrived this morning) and i was always going home this weekend or next anyway. Once the Chelmsford entry was basically assured, i looked into ways i could do both and it actually worked out well. 3 countries, 3 flights with 3 airlines (Easy Jet, SAS and Norwegian on Sunday evening) but the overall cost wasn't much more than a KLM return to Stockholm or Linköping that i normally take.

I'm missing out on the Kübler syndicate brunch day tomorrow, followed by Newbury in the afternoon (a few of the team are going) but there will be other occasions. At least next weekend i can relax in München in readiness for another trip over on April 30th or 1st May for the Guineas meeting.

Have a nice Friday evening all, more tomorrow.

Stewart

I understand why punters looking at breeding would think he needs to drop in trip, i tend to agree in this context, but his cadence, stride length indicates differently. Dan, David Egan and Jack Mitchel also say he's a 10f horse and this was one of the reasons we bought him, even though he won over 6f last season. He has a mind of his own, but he's lightly raced, could still improve and from a personal perspective, i feel he will win this season. If not, so be it, and we didn't go into this expecting great things anyway.

Good afternoon Guys,

Regular readers know i take an interest in French racing and to a lessor extent in Germany, basically pattern races with the latter and to this extent i like the probable favourite Mr Hollywood in the G2 Carl Jesters Preiss at Cologne (3.30) this afternoon. He was a long odds EW selection in the Arc last year, but ran poorly. Ignoring that run he's very consistent with a record of 1-1-2-2-2-1, the run when finishing a neck behind Zagrey being particularly good form with the latter running well against the likes of Westover and Equinox in his previous couple of runs.

A G3 winner over 11f on the course and 12f will not be an issue, not will heavy going, in fact it will be a positive.

5/4 was available early on with a few books (no market on BF) but i would have backed at evens.

At the Curragh, i think the AOB trained Henry Adams is a lay (16.00) although the fact a 3 year old has not won the race for 22 years was not the reasoning (i didn't check to see how many have run). May have been excuses at Meydan, but still has to prove he has trained on and it's not a bad field. I actually think he may be better over 8f and his future entries would support this, but AOB mentioned the trip would suit.

I actually like Yosemite Valley who looked good winning over 6f on the course last year and is 4lb better off with Big Gossey for 0.75L. Has to show he stays 7f, but i think he does and at 5.0 on here may be worth a small bet.

Good luck and have a nice Sunday all.

Good evening Guys,

As Meatloaf sang back in time, 2 out of 3 ain't bad. Wink

No starring role for Mr Hollywood who was beaten some way out and trailed home 4th of 5th at Cologne, almost 13L behind the winner. Too bad to be true and maybe something was amiss, but no comfort to joint-fav backers.

A losing stake was quickly recovered with a decent profit by laying the AOB trained Henry Adams (9/4) who ran on a par with Mr Hollywood and was beaten almost the same distance, finishing 5th of 6. Icing on the cake was Yosemite Valley who was well backed late on to 3/1 and an easy winner from off the pace. Lightly raced, he could go on to better things.

My long weekend is almost completed (less than a hour to my final flight home) i had a nice time, and assuming everything goes to plan, i will be back on April 30th or May 1st.

Have a nice Sunday evening all.

Good afternoon Guys,

Typical Sunday turf meetings in GB, but a half-decent card for the AW course at Southwell with a winners prize of almost 40K for one of the handicaps.

Over at Longchamp, a group race card including the G1 Prix Ganay and a few GB/Irish runners travelling over. An open race and no bet for me, but if i had to pick one, it would be EW Feed The Flame around 7/1.

In the G3 Prix de Barbeville (12.58) i like the probable favourite Double Major who i put to win the Royal Oak last year (won by 7L). Had a long season commencing in March then, but took his races well and improved for being stepped up in trip. Has to concede weight to the field; all of them having run this season, but trip and going will not be an issue. Interesting that Maxine Guyon chooses this one rather than Sober for the Andre Fabre stable (regular jockey on both). No 33/10 this time though, trading around evens (11/10 with 365).

At Haydock (3.00) an inform Karl Burke stable with likely favourite Gunlock will be popular after winning at Newcastle earlier in the month, but i prefer Gemstar who finished 0.5L behind him in March and is 7 lb better off this afternoon. Both have only raced on Tapeta and Gunlock has a dirt pedigree. Gemstar has been well backed in both runs and i suspect he may be better than his form suggests. Currently 3.75 on BF.

On to my syndicate horse, Salamanca Lad who has an entry at Goodwood next Friday May 3rd (4.25) over 10f, a class 5 handicap for 3 year olds. Currently 18 entries with several unexposed, but more on this when the final declarations are known. One of my favourite courses.

I'm coming over early, Tuesday afternoon in fact (May 1st is a public holiday here) and going to Goodwood on Friday and Newmarket for the 2000 guineas the following day. The 5 day Punchestown festival starts Tuesday and no doubt WPM will be mopping up even more graded races.

Good luck and have a nice Sunday all.

Good evening Guys,

Enjoying my time west of London (Premier Inn T4) although i haven't really been doing much other than relaxing, watching snooker, a bit of racing and an English food fix.

I'm off to Goodwood tomorrow, our syndicate horse Salamanca Lad runs in the 4.25, a class 5 over 10f. We're not really expecting big things, he has a bit to do and heavy is an unknown. It looks a reasonable field for the class and if the likely favourite Portsmouth goes in the ground, he could be difficult to beat. A couple of runners have been withdrawn, so 8 left at the moment that will be fine for EW backers.

I never thought i would ever have a runner at Goodwood, one of my favourite GB courses, so irrespective of the result, we will have a fun afternoon. On Saturday i'm off to Newmarket for the 2000 guineas and regular readers will know of my AP bets on City Of Troy and Ylang Ylang. Not large stakes, but much higher odds are looking a lot better now. More on that Saturday.

One i will be backing small EW is Many A Star in the sprint (15.15). Runs well here, a record of 3-1-2-3-1 and ran well in defeat on the AW LTO (2nd beaten a neck). 3rd in this race a couple of years ago and is due to go up 2 lb. Sassie on board is a bonus. Currently 6.0 on here.

Have a nice Thursday evening all, what's left of it.

Good afternoon Guys,

My first post since last Friday, but a busy period since and as today is a bank holiday in Bavaria (the 2nd of 4 this month) ample time to catch up.

I had a nice relaxing 5 + days West of London (returned to München Sunday evening) although a fair bit of travelling to Goodwood and Newmarket for race days on the Friday and Saturday.

Our syndicate horse Salamanca Lad was a little disappointing at Goodwood on Friday, although none of us really gave him a decent chance of winning and from what i know of the 6 that went, there were only small bets. Pre-race i thought he may get 4th and i would have been happy at that on going that was quite heavy.

In the post race interview David Egan said he basically threw in the towel at the 2f pole and needs to get his confidence back. He didn't blow much after the race, although he was only really coasting home. He thinks the 10f trip is not a problem, although on heavy it might be. He could be out again soon as Dan said he takes his racing well, but the trip is still up for discussion.

The handicapper has dropped him a pound to 65 that is not going to help a lot, but i think we will get a win this season.

Irrespective of the result, we all had a good time at one of my favourite GB courses and the hospitality for 'owners' was better than i expected, although bear in mind i have little experience of it, only Goodwood and Chelmsford, with Kempton as a guest. It certainly is a quality way to enjoy racing and there is an elegance at Goodwood that is probably only surpassed at Ascot and Longchamp. I only had 4 bets, all of them small, the largest stake £60, but £40 win on Desperate Hero at 5/1 (SP 6/1) made it a profitable day. I thought the odds-on jolly in the opener would win, but i didn't back it. All in all, a really nice afternoon and evening at a local pub with good company.

Unfortunately, i gave back the profit at Newmarket on the following day (and a bit more besides) on City Of Troy. A pity as i also had an AP bet at 16/1, but that's racing. A poor run, but not for the first time with an AOB 'best ever' in the 2000 Guineas. Unfortunately my winning betting run with bookmaker Ed Thompson ended in the race; my first bet with him was Ten Sovereigns in the Middle Park (documented on the 2018 lay thread) in September 2018 and there have been quite a few since, albeit all shorties. My run couldn't go on forever of course, but it's only lent Ed. Wink

No idea when my next trip over to GB is, it depends on a Salamanca Lad entry, but i will not be going to Longchamp for the 2000/1000 Guineas meeting this weekend (i was there for Blue Rose Cen last year). I backed Bauvatier to win @ 8/1 with PP last week so i will obviously take an interest in the race. Another trip i will not be making this month (as planned) is to Auteuil for the French Gold Cup as II Est Francais will not be running. I haven't seen a detailed explanation from the trainer other than a 'summer break', but i suspect he incurred a muscle injury when he over-stretched at the ditch LTO; a superb jump though, remining me of Sprinter Sacre.

On to this afternoon at Chester, there are a couple i fancy, Never So Brave in the handicap (2.35) but more so Jayarebe in the listed Dee stakes (3.05). He has a 3lb penalty, but is lightly raced and after a novice win on debut was deemed good enough to run in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere (Grand Criterium) where he finished unplaced, but only 6L off the winner Rosallion who was runner-up in the 2000 guineas on Saturday. Won well at Newmarket LTO, good sectional and in a fast time. Conditions were good that day and many winning times were faster than standard, but he was fastest. Another furlong to travel that shouldn't be a problem, and although drawn on the outside, there are only 5 runners. I think he could turn out half-decent. Currently odds of 2.64 on here.

Good luck Andrew, I will be laying both of those.

Class 5 maiden at Thirsk to a Class 2 Handicap at Chester on completely different ground....yikes imo. No winner last 14 days.

Brian Meehan 6/4 Fav, my god, no thank you. No winner last 14 days. All the other trainers in the race in good form.

Hi Trusty,

Thanks for the post.

I'm backing both, but nothing major. Never So Brave had good 2 year old form behind Ancient Wisdom and Vandeek (5 group wins between them) and could be well handicapped, but i agree Chester is not Thirsk. As for Brian Meehan, not on my list of trainers to follow by any means, but i do like the horse.

Good luck.

Lay Post

Chelmsford 18.30 - Amaysmont

A 7 year-old Mayson gelding trained by Kevin Frost in Nottinghamshire.

Winner of 4 from 47 runs including 3 on the AW, but 22 races since his last win in January 2021 and barring his debut over 6f on turf in 2019, all wins at 8f and 8.5f (4 wins by Richard Fahey).

If the race was in 2022, he would be a handicap snip and odds-on in this field, but he's regressed and been beaten in class 0-55 before. Raced off a mark of 84 in July 2022, but has never run off a higher mark than his previous race since.

Has shown a little form in his previous couple of runs finishing runner-up twice, albeit over 8f and 7f respectively and the latter was on turf/soft. I'm not convinced a step back to 6f is a positive, certainly when looking at recent runs when he ran from off the pace and was nearest at the line.

Amateur jockey only had 3 rides, without a win.

A trappy 11 runner handicap and although several can be discounted, there are still 5 at least running for layers.

The handicapper may have given him a chance off 52, but he has been beaten off the same mark in his previous 2 runs and this is his 3rd race in 10 days.

Lay @ 2.92

Good luck all.

Keep praising yourself on you losing threads Ikea, no honour in self praise or false biographies btw.

However the 1830 hrs Chelms is actually and amateurs race so citing the jockey on Amaysmont is hardly inciteful nor is her record under rules?

The handicapper giving the horse a chance according to you but runs off the same mark as the last two runs?

You seem keen on keeping your thread going despite abject failure but without debate understandable for a Sociopathic such as yourself.

Here is something you can gloat over £200 @ 13/8 bog PP and £160 @ 5/4 R Bernard and £22 win double.

Enjoy a good laugh if they fail but post your bets otherwise?
