Amhran Na Bhfiann, 1 pt EW @ 20-1, 4.40 Curragh (5 PLACES)

Amhran Na Bhfiann was quite impressive under Colin Keane when making all over C/D in a Group 2 on good to firm in June, when he had his stablemate and today's rival Passion eleven lengths back in third.

He wasn't without market support on his next start in the Goodwood Cup, but it's likely the soft ground was unsuitable for him and he reportedly lost a shoe. Better might have been expected back at the Curragh last time on yielding ground under a 3lb penalty, but after being taken on for the lead he ended up well held in a Group Three won by today's rival Twilight Payment, with Emperor Of The Sun and Barrington Court in third and fourth, who also reoppose here.

He's of interest today back on a sounder surface with Colin Keane riding him again for the first time since the C/D win, and while it's a concern how much pace pressure he will face if attempting to make all again, a chance is taken EW at the odds with a good draw to work from and five places on offer.

A poor day.

Moonlit Cloud was a big drifter in the betting returning from over six weeks off, and could only plug on at the one pace in the straight for a well held fifth.

Amhran Na Bhfiann as expected led and Keane stepped on the gas a long way from home as the horse built up a big lead, but had probably gone too hard and was a sitting duck in the straight.
Interestingly, there was good support for his stablemate King Of The Castle, who was sent off at 12-1 having been generally a 33s shot this morning, and he benefited from the strong pace as he stayed on well into fourth.

Enchanted Night, 1pt win @ 7-2, 5.00 Yarmouth

Enchanted Night meets Kodi Gold on 6lb better terms for the two lengths she was beaten by him over 6f at this track last month, when having set what appeared a decent pace and been two or three lengths clear into the final furlong, she was headed inside the final 110 yards by the Dave Evans-trained gelding who had sat off the pace and was landing a gamble on his stable debut.

There could be more to come from Kodi Gold for his new yard, and he may get a similar pace scenario to run at here on this drop back to 5f, but the evidence of that latest run suggested a drop to the minimum trip could suit Enchanted Night, so a chance is taken at their relative prices.

Dark Side Prince has run well to be placed over C/D on his last two starts and has to be feared dropping in grade if ready to roll after six weeks off.

Mashaan, 1pt win @ 17-2, 7.20 Wolverhampton

Mashaan seems best on the AW and he's of interest returned to a synthetic surface this evening. He was a good third at Chelmsford in July when he probably didn't have the kindest of trips. The winner Baba Reza has since gone close back at Chelmsford off a 5lb higher mark. The second, Enduring, who is a better horse on the AW, has since finished a good third in a Racing League handicap at Lingfield (AW).

Mashaan finished runner-up three times as a juvenile on Tapeta in maiden / novice company, so the switch of surface shouldn't be an issue, and he can race off a 5lb lower mark than at Chelmsford following two lesser runs on turf.

Didn't take Mashaan EW at the price it was this morning, but big drifter in the betting all day and finishes third at 20-1. Damn and blast!

As for Enchanted Night, she has placed on heavy ground before, so not sure I can blame the change in the going, but she looks like a little pony, so maybe having to work harder in the ground was a negative. Also I don't think stall 1 helped as there did seem some advantage in coming towards the stands' side on the card. She still ran alright in fourth.

My Lady Claire, 1 pt EW @ 10-1, 7.30 Chelmsford (5 PLACES)

A few firms are offering five places on this wide open affair and a chance is taken EW on My Lady Claire, who suggested on her latest start over C & D that she could be running into form, when she had today's rival Disarming just behind her in fifth. She had to work from a wide draw that day to get into a prominent position, and having come under pressure on the home bend, she stuck to her task well before having to settle for fourth place. The winner hasn't done much for the form since, but the third has come out and won on turf.

My Lady Claire is three pound below her last winning mark, has a lower draw this time, and David Probert who was aboard for both of her career wins to date, takes over again in the saddle.

Lady Lade, 1pt EW @ 12-1, 1,35 Ayr, (4 PLACES)

After shaping well on her debut at Carlisle over 5f (g/s), Lady Lade impressed when winning her maiden over the same C & D (g/f) and when following up a penalty in novice company at Hamilton (5f, good). The form of those races could have worked out better and she was sent off an unfaniced 20-1 shot when finishing well held in a valuable nursery over 6f at the Ebor meeting. However, she was done no favours by being drawn high in a race were four of the first five home were drawn low.

Lady Lade has been dropped a pound and needs to prove she up's to a mark in the low eighties, but with her York effort being easy enough to forgive, she makes some appeal at the prices. There is rain forecast for Ayr today, but having shaped well enough on her debut on good to soft, hopefully it won't be an issue should the going change.

Ernest Rutherford, 2.10 Ayr, 1 pt EW @ 12-1.

Ernest Rutherford impressed when winning a miaden at Naas on his second start (yielding-soft, 5f) last month, when despite having raced freely, he found plenty to run on strongly and assert in the final furlong. The third has since won a nursery off a mark of 80 to give the form some substance.

He could do with settling better, but he won't mind if the forecast rain gets into the ground and interesting to see how he handles this step up in class.

Emraan, 1pt EW @ 9-1, 6.00 Kempton

Emraan makes some appeal back on the all weather,  being two from three on Polytrack (both wins at Lingfield) and now being rated 15lb lower than sent handicapping on the back of those two wins. The horse he beat for the second of his wins, Plantadream, is currently rated 94 on the AW, but Emraan can race off 70 this evening.

He didn't shape too badly on his latest turf start on soft ground at Haydock (7f), when always close to what looked a decent pace in the conditions in a race where the first and third were held up, and despite ending up finishing fifth, he was at least six lengths clear of the remainder.

Emraan is returning from a six week break and hasn't been done any favours by the draw, but he's clearly potentially well handicapped back on an artificial surface.

My form has run cold.

Lady Lade wasn't disgraced but didn't look to have anything in hand of her mark, finishing 6th of the 15 runners.

Jungle Inthebungle, 1pt EW @ 9-1, 4.55 Wolverhampton

Jungle Inthebungle did the thread a favour when he made the frame at decent odds at Thirsk the other day, and he remains of interest returning to a course and distance over which he was good second last season when rated 13 pound higher.

He has a win and two places to his name from just nine starts on artificial surfaces, and provided this doesn't come too soon, hopefully he can be competitive again.

Berry Edge, 1 pt win @ 8-1, 4.50 Hamilton

It might not have been the strongest of handicaps that Berry Edge won two starts back at Beverley (10f, soft) with the short-priced favourite Johnny Boom (who has won and been beat a nose in two starts since) disappointing for whatever reason, but he probably still did well to win given he was sent forward from an outer draw to dispute the pace two-wide and had to fend off a strong challenge inside the final furlong. It was the first time Berry Edge had encountered a soft surface and only his second start at 10f.

He finished last of three when last seen 47 days ago when stepped up in trip to 14f round Catterick on good ground, but it's possible being back on a sounder surface wasn't ideal, though the winner has boosted the form by winning at the Ayr Western meeting.

The near-seven week break is a concern, but Berry Edge is of interest back on softer ground off just a pound higher mark than for his Beverley win, and the way he stayed on that day to gamely grind out victory suggested he could be suited by today's 12f trip.

Mount Rainier, 1pt EW @ 14-1, 1.00 Leicester

Mount Rainier is eligible for weaker races than this, but is of a little interest back on a (hopefully) sound turf surface. She seemed to relish the quick ground at Ffos Las in July on her nursery debut when pulling clear with Whistledown, who has since been unfortunate not to win a valuable nursery at Sandown in bizarre circumstances. Mount Rainier was strong at the finish that day at Ffos Las and there is stamina on the dam's side of her pedigree, so I wonder if she may prove more effective over further, but hopefully this stiffer test at the trip will help.

Of her two runs since, she ran well to be third of fifteen at Doncaster on good to soft off a 6lb higher mark, and last time failed to make any impression in a race at Wolverhampton won by her stablemate Amiga Meu, who also runs in this. Mount Rainier needs to bounce back from that latest run, but hopefully the return to a sound surface on turf will show her in a better light.

Autumn Evening, 1pt EW @ 16-1, 3.50 Listowel (5 PLACES)

A rare selection over hurdles for this thread.

There was good market support around for Autumn Evening on his return from a six month break at Tramore last month over two miles on the Flat, and he shaped quite well, keen enough in the ground as the rain had started to get in and perhaps not helped by sticking to the inner as the ground there got chewed up as the card went on, but he was on the pace for most of the way until fading inside the final furlong.

Hopefully that run has put him spot on for this relatively valuable prize, and a chance is taken EW with five places generally on offer (and six in a place).

First Greyed, 1pt win @ 7-1, 5.00 Hamilton

I'm going to give another chance to First Greyed who I selected last time at Thirsk when he was a bit disappointing. He had previously probably shaped better than the bare result at Beverley (8.5f, g-f) when returning from a 6-week break, he went off quite hard in front before being headed around a furlong out and gradually weakening, in a race where the winner had been held up. The form has worked out reasonably well with the runner-up winning twice since, and the fifth winning on the AW.

First Greyed seems versatile ground-wise and is now 3lb below his last winning mark. It's possible he may get to dictate the pace, though there are a couple in here who have made the running previously.

Loch Long, 1pt EW @ 25-1, 5.20 Newcastle (4 PLACES)

Loch Long ran well to finish third over C & D in early August, when his effort probably wanted marking up given he was drawn wide, was keen enough when disputing the pace, but found plenty to just go down narrowly to one who has since missed out by only a nose over this C & D and then won on turf. Today's rival Oot Ma Way was 1.5 lengths further back in third, and there shouldn't be much between them again, but Loch Long gets the vote at the prices.

The concern is that Loch Long hasn't reproduced the form in his two starts since at Wolverhampton and Beverley, but he's had tough draws to deal with both times. He has a kinder draw to work from here and interesting to see if a return to this track and trip prompts a return to form.
