As for Equiano Springs, some of his wins / best runs have been when he's on the pace going even fractions. Today, in a field of seven, they crawl along and he's pulling for his head, and surprise surprise, when the pace eventually lifts he just plugs on one pace

Diamond Eyes, 1pt EW @ 14-1, 2.25 Navan

This looks quite open and competitive despite there being only eight runners, but a chance is taken EW on Diamond Eyes at the prices. She didn't shape too badly on her belated reappearance over 6f at Naas (good) last month when showing good speed to lead in the centre of the track before being headed over a furlong out and proving no match for those who raced more towards the stands' side.

Diamond Eyes faced a tough task in open Listed company last time over 5f at Tipperary when she finished around three lengths behind Mi Esperanza, who she meets today on 8lb better terms, though admittedly she's no good thing to reverse the form given Mi Esperanza was probably not best drawn that day.

This will be just her fifth career start, so is still open to improvement, and hopefully will be primed for a bigger effort today with those two recent runs behind her.

Fivethousandtoone, 1pt win @ 11-2, 3.15 York

Nothing on my shortlist today, but on a second look I'm going to tentatively take a chance on Fivethousandtoone, who ran a strange sort of race in a Group 2 over 7f at York last time, when he missed the break, but soon made headway to dispute the lead while staying out wide on the track with two others, before leaving the impression in the straight he'd done too much too soon. Interestingly, one of the two horses who stayed wide with him through the early part of the race was Pogo, who has since shown much improved form to finish third in the Celebration Mile at Goodwood.

Fivethousandtoone drops back in trip to 6f today which looks worth a go based on that latest evidence, and while he doesn't face an easy task here against his elders in this Listed contest, it's possible he may enjoy a tactical advantage if breaking more cleanly this time and setting the fractions.

Prince Ali, 1pt EW @ 14-1, 5.55 Newcastle (4 PLACES)

I'm going to give another chance to Prince Ali who caught the eye at Beverley over 7.5f on his reappearance in July when not getting a clear run and shaping as though he would have finished a lot closer had the gaps appeared. I selected him on his next start when up in grade slightly and trip to 8.5f at Beverley, when he was a bit disappointing, failing to land a blow and just making a little late headway into fifth. The second, Empirestateofmind, has won twice since to at least give the form a boost.

He got upset in the stalls and missed the break on that latest run, which may partly explain why he didn't run better, but he also became upset in the stalls on his latest intended start and had to be withdrawn, so he's clearly having issues with the stalls.

He's up in trip to 10f here and has his stamina to prove being by Twilight Son, but he has shaped as though worth a go at it, provided he settles. He was well beaten on his sole start at this track to date but that was on his debut when he probably needed the experience, and his pedigree is encouraging for the surface being a half-brother to two winners on Tapeta. He's now rated 3lb lower than the mark he ran off for that first Beverley run, which allows him into this 0-67.

I didn't have a strong view on the race to be honest. The only one of these I've notebooked at Newcastle previously is Attaboy Roy, but he's coming off a 6 week break here with first time blinkers on, and he hasn't been missed in the market.

Of the others, I've had Raabeh in the notebook for a while (a Southwell run), and he keeps threatening to win one of these but never does. He's punching above his weight here a bit as he's eligible for weaker races.

Good effort from Aleef, Virgin, evens in the run.

Jamih, 1pt EW @ 16-1, 3.10 Catterick (4 PLACES)

Jamih is of a little interest at the prices with four places on offer. His finished third behind today's rivals Amourie and Flower Power over C & D in July and he meets the winner on 5lb better terms (+ Harry Russell's 3lb claim) for a 2.5l beaten.

Jamih has run well on good to soft previously, but his maiden win back in the day came on good to firm, and notably last season at Doncaster in a 0-77 over 10f he finished a good third on quick ground off a 6lb higher mark in a race won by Polyphony, who is currently rated 10lb higher. So I hope they haven't overdone the watering at Catterick.

Of his two starts since the Catterick third, he finished a close-up fourth over 12f at Thirsk (good, 0-65) last month, and although ultimately well beaten on his latest start over 12.5f at Musselburgh, that came in what appeared a well-run race on ground possibly with more cut in it than is ideal for him and he probably shaped better than the bare result.

He drops back in grade slightly today and he looks fairly handicapped on some of his form. Hopefully he will derive some benefit from wearing a tongue-tie for the first time.

Captian Corelli, 1pt EW @ 8-1, 4.50 Carlisle

Captain Corelli appreciated the return to a sounder surface on his latest start over C/D three weeks ago, when always close to what looked an honest pace, travelled well into the lead around 2f out, before being head close home. The winner, Libby Ami, who might have improved for the switch to Grant Tuer's stable, has since gone close to following up at Newcastle, and the third Little Ted has easily won a seller since. He meets the fourth, Retirement Beckons, on the same terms today.

Captain Corelli is up in grade slightly, but has only gone up a pound for that latest effort, so kept to the same conditions can hopefully go close today.

Queens Carriage, 1pt EW @ 22-1, 5.35 Cork (4 PLACES)

Queen's Carriage has faced stiff tasks in a couple of Listed races on her last two starts, and she's of interest on the latest of them which came at Tipperary over 5f (good-yielding) when probably not best drawn and racing towards the far side in a race dominated by those drawn high, and in the circumstances didn't shape too badly having raced prominently for a fair way.

She's down in class today and back into handicap company. Her draw in one is a slight concern given that being drawn high on the new straight track at Cork has sometimes been an advantage, but the return to 6f shouldn't be an issue. Jack Coen, an inexperienced 10lb claimer rides her for the first time, but he has already ridden a winner from just ten rides, so hopefully Queen's Carriage won't lack for assistance from the saddle.
