Equiano Springs, 1pt win @ 18-1, 3.00 Pontefract

Another chance is given to Equiano Springs who I selected the other Friday at Hamilton when he lost all chance at the start.

Equiano Springs has yet to win in five attempts when being pitched into Class 2 company, but he finished runner-up at Ascot at this level last season off a 4lb higher mark behind Chil Chil, who is  now rated 25lb higher. His reappearance run over tonight's C/D in a strong handicap won by the re-opposing Rathbone, wasn't without hope having caught the eye finishing his race off well after having been deatched over 2f out.

Equiano Springs has since disappointed at Newmarket when very weak in the betting, so needs to bounce back from that, but a chance is taken at the odds.

He's eased in grade this time and he's landed the inside stall, so hopefully he can break cleanly this time.

Azano, 1pt win @ 12-1, 4.10 Pontefract

A chance is taken at the prices on Azano, who may be able to get to the rail and dictate, particularly as his stablemate Rhoscolyn, who is drawn inside him, is stepping up in trip and may take a lead. Azano was a little disappointing last time at Chester, but he was forced to race two wide and did still finish in front of Rhosolyn.

Rhoscolyn, who is trying a mile today for just the second time, was much the better fancied of the pair at Chester and is seemingly the choice of Danny Tudhope today, and he could find this setting up nicely from his low draw if Azano is taken on for the lead.

Azano's form would suggest he's best with some cut but he gave it a good go from the front on his penultimate start at York on good to firm when finishing second in Listed company.

Regal Reality is probably not the horse he was but has plenty in hand on official ratings, while Brunch is respected on his major handicap form this season.

Noticed in the first race they've got the rail dolled out three yards from the three marker to turning into straight. So maybe the usual rail / on the pace advantage on quick ground round there will be negated to some extent?

Yes, IAWN, good run, just got run out of the first two places late on.

As for Equiano Springs, not knocked about today I think it's fair to say. Interestingly, the race at Ascot last season in which he was second to the now much higher rated Chil Chil, presumably this season's renewal is a week on Saturday, so just wonder if that is the plan.

Mind, it says on the BHA website that he has to pass a stalls test before he can run again.

Classy Al, 1pt EW @ 28-1, 2.15 Ayr, 4 PLACES (not BOG)

A chance is taken on Classy Al at a price with four places on offer.  He caught the eye on his third run for a mark at Redcar over 6f (g/f) in June, when he still looked green but gave it a good shot when only fading to fourth in the closing stages. Ahead of him in third place was Burscough, who has twice run well since in handicaps off a mark of 67.

Classy Al went handicapping off a mark of 64 when moved back up in trip to 7f at Ayr in a 0-77, but he was weak in the betting, reportedly ran too free and finished last of the nine runners.

He has a bit to prove after that, but he's been dropped 2lb, returns to 6f, and a hood is applied on this drop in grade to a 0-64. This doesn't look easy from an outside stall against his elders with the likes of Glenamoy Lad (who has been much better than this grade in his time and caught the eye last time out) and Jordan Electrrics (who was selected last time and looks likely to go well dropped in grade and returned to 6f), but there's likely to be better to come from Classy Al at some point, hopefully today.

It was good to firm at Redcar, but he looks a sizable sort with a bit of a knee action and a soft ground influence close up in his pedigree, so it remains to be seen what his ideal ground conditions are.

Like all my best 4TP EW chances, Classy Al finished 5th.

He was dropped in, looked gawky and shall we say a work in progress, ran on under just hands and heels to be never nearer than at the finish.

Doublethetrouble, 1pt EW @ 16-1, 2.15 Yarmouth

It was just a 5-runner affair in which Doublethetrouble finished second at Nottingham (g/f)early last month when trying 14f in first time blinkers, but it was run in a respectable time and the comfortable winner Oceanline (who might have had excuses in defeat since) relished the step up in trip as his pedigree suggested he would, while the third Fandabidozi has run well in defeat since.

Doublethetrouble disappointed on his latest start at Doncaster when last of five and finishing behind today's rival Mariegold, but it's the possible the softer ground didn't suit. He wears a first-time visor today and hopefully the ground will remain on the quick side.

Rinty Maginty, 1pt EW @ 33-1, 4.00 Yarmouth (5 PLACES)

Rinty Maginty was having just his third run for Patrick Chammings when doing well to finish third over a mile at Brighton (g/f) in late April, considering how keen he'd been through the race. He had today's rival Harlequin Rose behind in third, while the winner Thomas Lanfiere has won twice since.

Rinty McGinty, who was rated a lot higher in the past, has twice disappointed since, including when finishing behind Harelquin Rose back at Brighton, so a leap of faith is now required, but it wouldn't surprise if his current yard got a win out of him at some point, so a chance is taken EW with 5 places on offer (if all sixteen run).

A few firms were offering five places EW in the 4.00 Yarmouth so long as all sixteen runners lined up, which thankfully they did, as Rinty Maginty faded to fifth in the closing stages after setting what looked a strong enough pace.

Doublethetrouble also landed the place part of the selection. They didn't seem to go much pace, so he probably wasn't badly positioned up front when the kick for home started and he kept on well enough for third place.

Somekindasuperstar, 1pt EW @ 18-1, 3.20 Redcar (4 PLACES)

Somekindasuperstar didn't shape too badly on her reappearance and debut run for Jessica Macey at Nottingham twelve days ago over 6f on good to firm ground, in a 56-66 rated handicap. She was keen enough sat close to the pace but was still in contention for a place until weakening inside the furlong and shaping as though the run was needed.

She drops in grade here to a 46-57, and hopefully the overnight rain at Redcar will be a help rather than a hindrance given she's by Fast Company and her best run to date came when encountering good to soft ground at Doncaster last season when finishing third off a 9lb higher mark than she runs off here.
By:

When: 28 Jul 21 15:47
A poor show from today's selection who offered nothing.

I don't know much about the trainer Jessica Macey, but she took over Phoenix Star from Stuart Williams, a horse that had been round the block and was seemingly on the decline with a mark in the fifties, but he's now rated a career-high 82. So she can get the job done it would seem.

Whether she can work her magic on Somekindasuperstar though, remains to be seen.

Lipsink, 1pt EW @ 20-1, 6.55 Necastle (4 PLACES) Not B.O.G

A chance is taken EW on Lipsink, who was two from three on AW surfaces in France, and whose debut run for Robert Cowell over 6f at Chelmsford wasn't without hope given he probably shaped better than the bare result having seemingly done plenty on the front end before weakening inside the final furlong.

He hasn't built on that run in two starts since, though not sure the race went his way at Wolverhampton next time over 5f (the form of which has worked out very well), and he was reported to have boiled over in the preliminaries when running a shocker last time at Newmarket.

Lipsink has been gelded and undergone wind surgery since he was last seen over three months ago, his mark has dropped 8lb, and he wears a first-time tongue tie, so it will be interesting to see if he is more amenable this time and can see his race out better.

Nagasaki Dream, 1pt EW @ 18-1, 1.25 Wolverhampton

Nagasaki Dream ran a couple of fair races at this track in the spring, including when finishing fourth over C/D in May when not far behind today's rivals Red Ealls and Nacho, despite having endured a three-wide trip.

The three runs since have been disappointing but it is possible to make excuses on account of slipped saddle / higher grade, possibly finding 8.5f too far having mixed it up front with the well handicapped Kayfast Warrior, and last time a wide trip from a wide draw over C/D.

He has a lower draw to work from this time and an experienced 7lb claimer is enlisted.

Boy George 1pt EW @ 14-1, 4 PLACES, 4.50 Wolverhampton
New Look, 1pt EW @ 25-1, 4 PLACES, 4.50 Wolverhampton

Boy George and New Look both ran in a 9.5f handicap at the track on Monday evening when they were held up in a race where it appeared an advantage to be on the pace, so the runs are easy enough to forgive.

Boy George had been a little disappointing on firm ground at Bath on his penultimate run, but had been running consistently well previously, including when runner-up both over C/D in May and in a big field at Nottingham in June.

He doesn't help himself by racing keenly, but it hasn't stopped him from running his race on occasions, and he looks worth another chance.

It's fair to say New Look is more of a place prospect than a win one given his record of one win from 47 starts. He shaped as though in form on his penultimate start when making late gains over an inadequate 7f at Ayr, and he was a fair third the last time he raced over C/D in May (in the race in which Boy George was second).

Lincoln Dream, 1pt EW @ 9-1, 1.45 Doncaster (4 PLACES)

Lincoln Dream, a £60,000 breeze-up buy, made her debut at Haydock over 6f in May in what was just a three runner affair, but the two males she faced are currently rated 92 and 81, and she did well to be beaten only around 3 lengths given how hard she had pulled on the soft ground.

A couple of runs since on quicker ground, when noticeably weak in the betting, have failed to see her progress, but she may appreciate being back on slightly easier ground today, and although it may be unwise to take her debut form literally given the size of the field and tactical nature of the race, an opening mark of 63 looks fair.

Rubee Forty, 1pt EW @ 33-1, 6.05 Lingfield (4 PLACES)

A speculative vote is given to Rubee Forty who had caught the eye two runs back at this track over 7f when she shaped okay having raced in the centre of the track on a day when racing close the stands-rail on the straight turf course looked an advantage.

She wasn't disgraced over this evening's C/D on her latest start when finishing fifth (from 4lb out of the handicap) of the eight runners behind Moosmee who she faces again here, and although it looks a tough task to try and reverse the form with that thriving rival who has won again since, she does have a 17lb pull at the weights (when s Tyler Heard's 5lb claim is taken into consideration).
By:

The extra place concession came in handy as Lincoln Dream finished fourth at 12-1.
Rubee Forty looked held but was trying to make some headway when not getting the clearest of runs up the rail.

It's never ceases to amaze how they make fools of you.

I selected Krystal Maze on this thread last time out at Beverley at 50-1 (4 places) when she was stepping up in trip to 7.5f in a 0-56. She got on the lead from a low draw, but appeared not to stay and much to my chagrin, dropped to 5th place inside the final furlong.

Today, up in grade and trip to a mile, albeit on an easier track, she led before looking set to be swamped inside the final furlong, only this time to find loads and fend off the challengers.

Exhalation, 1pt EW @ 18-1 (4 PLACES), 2.18 Newcastle

Exhalation is of interest back at Newcastle and down in trip.

A shock 80-1 winner at the track over a mile in March on her second start for Philip Makin, she looked a shade unlucky not to follow up on her next start over the same C?D when just having to wait for some daylight before running on well to close on the winner at the line.

Two of her four runs since have been on turf, and on her latest visit to Newcastle she might not have stayed the 10f trip. It's a query whether the drop back to 7f today will suit, but she can be keen in her races, so hopefully with the front-running Thaayer in the field, this won't be  run at a dawdle.

She's only 2lb above the mark she won off in March, and promising 7lb claimer Jonny Peate rides her for the first time.

Sagauteur, 1pt win @ 5-1, 8.15 Windsor

Sagauteur hasn't been missed in the betting but he still makes some appeal.

He has failed to place in seven starts since joining David O'Meara having previously been trained in France, but his mark has now dropped 19lb and there were signs last time in a stronger grade at Newbury that he could be about to find his level in this country.

He gave it a good go from on the pace and although unable to match the principals inside the final furlong and dropping to fifth position, he still finished clear of the other ten runners.

He's down into a 0-70 tonight, and this track could suit if front running tactics are adopted again.

Yes DG, poor from Exhalation, who had to be reshod before she went to the start, then she took some persuading to go down, and in the race backed out of it tamely.

Sagauteur made for painful viewing. They held him up this time (he had been keen at Newbury), but it backfired because there wasn't any pace on and as a result they were in a heap going into the final furlong, where gaps closed on him twice before he was switched to the outer, and he could only finish a close up fourth.

Coup De Gold 1pt EW @ 9-1, 4.25 Catterick

Coup De Gold has over 3 lengths to find with Edgar Allan Poe on their CD form from last month, but Coup De Gold probably shaped better than the bare form given he did a lot of running from a wide draw to get into a prominent position, then kicked for home soon enough from over three furlongs out.

When claims are taken into account, Coup De Gold has an 8lb pull with Edgar Allan Poe, and hopefully with a more efficient trip this time he can at least make the frame.

Miss Sligo, 1pt EW @ 11-1, (4 PLACES), 8.00 Lingfield

It was a good effort at Bath over 10f in June by Miss Sligo when going down narrowly from 1lb out of the handicap against Tundra, who was won and then run well in defeat since. She disappointed on her latest start back at Bath, but perhaps the step back up to 11.5f didn't suit as well.

Miss Sligo is returned to 10f this evening, and while she has yet to place in five starts on the AW, there have been positives to take from two previous starts over CD, including when not getting a clear run behind today's rival Anniemation in May.

Rinty McGinty, 1ot win @ 8-1, 2.25 Brighton

Rinty McGinty was selected the other day at Yarmouth when he finished fifth and landed the extra place concession at decent odds in a big field, and he's selected again on this drop to 7f.

He was having just his third run for Patrick Chamings when doing well to finish third over a mile at Brighton (g/f) in late April, considering how keen he'd been through the race. His latest run at Yarmouth suggested this drop back to 7f was worth trying given he was keen again in the lead and didn't quite see it out inside the final furlong.

Rinty McGinty is 'wrong' at the weights with a few of these in this classified race, but he has been rated a lot higher in the past and he hasn't had many chances for his current stable.

Impeach, 1pt win @ 14-1, 9.00 Kempton

Impeach has been absent for over six months and has changed stables, but a chance is taken at the odds on his debut for Conrad Allen with Tom Marquand booked.

He ran well to be second over 6f at this course in January to Elusive Treat, who would go on to win two more and is now rated thirteen pounds higher. Impeach's only subsequent run came at Southwell when third behind one who has shown himself to be very effective on the Fibresand surface.

Impeach has been gelded since last seen and has to prove his stamina for 7f, but shapes as though he should be fine at the trip if ridden with a bit of restraint.

Tashim, 6.55 Leopardstown, 1pt EW @ 17-2, (6 PLACES)

Tashim shaped well on his reappearance and debut run for Paul Flynn over a mile at Navan in May on heavy ground, when sat close enough to what seemed a decent pace in the conditions (run in a time 5 seconds quicker than the maiden on the card won by subsequent Group 3 winner Earlswood), and while he held every chance in the straight, he ended up on the far side of the track which might not have been the best place to be and he weakened out of it.

He ran well two starts back to be third of fourteen at Gowran Park, and he shaped better than the bare result last time when denied a clear run at Killarney. Those starts have come on better ground, but the Navan run suggests he goes well enough on more testing ground should the going change at Leopardstown, and with six places EW on offer, he gets the vote.

History Writer, 7.20 Doncaster, 1pt EW @ 18-1, (4 PLACES)

History Writer has been disappointing on his last two starts, including last time out at Salisbury when very weak in the betting in a race where his stablemate Mitigation was heavily backed and looked unlucky not to win. However,  earlier in the season History Writer hadn't shaped too badly in a couple of major handicaps, when not getting a clear run over C/D in the Lincoln, and when eighth of 27 in the Victoria Cup at Ascot when perhaps the 7f trip was sharp enough.

History Writer is eased in grade this evening, and while it's hard to know what to expect, he won't mind if the going eases, and a chance is taken at the odds with four places on offer.

Fierospeed, 7.53 Doncaster, 1pt EW @ 16-1, (4 PLACES)

Fierospeed's two wins to date have come on the AW, but he has only had three chances on turf, and although he finished last of four on his return from a break over 10f at Nottingham last week,  he was only beaten less than 2 lengths behind the progressive Miramichi, albeit in what might have been a tactical affair.

He's entitled to come on for that first run in over three months, and while softer going would be an unknown, his pedigree being by Zoffany out of a Montjeu mare would be encouraging that he won't mind some cut in the ground, and as a lightly raced 3YO he remains of interest.
