Kodiac Prince, 1pt EW @ 18-1, 3.10 Killarney

Plenty of racing today but nothing leaping off the page at me.

I'm going to take a chance on Kodiac Prince who has been shaping as though he could be running into form. He was noted staying on well two starts back over a mile at Punchestown (good), and last time at Listowel over 7f on yielding ground, he had a wide trip but was still close up when meeting trouble in the straight.

He is eligible for weaker races than this, but was rated 80 at the end of last season and is now down to 68. He seems versatile regarding ground, and hopefully will benefit from the application of first-time cheekpieces.

Angel Bleu, 1pt EW @ 13-2, 1.50 Longchamp

A chance is taken on Angel Bleu in the hope he doesn't pull his chance away on this return from over two months off. He's been taking a grip in his races but it didn't stop him from running well to be second in Listed company at Ascot in July, and then winning the Group 2 Vintage Stakes at Glorious Goodwood. The latter form could have worked out better, but his form when winning a conditions race at Pontefract in late May isn't looking too bad now given he had Lusail and Ever Given in behind.

He's landed the inside draw today and the ground looks to be in his favour, so hopefully this strong looking two year old can at least make the frame.

Coup De Gold, 1pt EW @ 12-1, 5.25 Kelso (4 PLACES)

I selected Coup De Gold when he ran at Catterick (good) in August, having marked up his run on his previous start at that track on good to soft, but having been held up on a sounder surface he made no impression. Of his two runs since, he ran ok to finish third on good ground over 2m6f at Cartmel behind one who followed up under a 7lb penalty, and last time back on the Flat at Redcar, it's possible he found the ground quicker than ideal.

He's a pound lower here than for his Cartmel third, though Aaron Anderson's claim is reduced by 4lb in this conditional jockeys' race, but hopefully there will be a bit more cut in this ground this time.

Tomorrow could be a no selection day, with just some meeting in France on and a bit of hedgehopping.

Judging by the times it looked like the ground had dried out at Kelso, which I don't think was ideal for Coup De Gold, but he managed to make the frame after trading odd-on for peanuts in the run.

Ron O, 1 pt EW @ 18-1, 2.44 Pontefract (4 PLACES)

Ron O may be trying to punch above his weight here being rated 64 and running in a 0-81, but he's of interest on the forecast soft ground. He ran well to second on soft ground over 9f at Redcar as a juvenile, when he had horses now rated 87 and 105 behind him in third and fourth. He's only had the chance to race on soft ground once this season and that was when not shaping too badly from a wide draw round Beverley.

He's been running ok since on sounder surfaces, and his rating is now 11lb below what is was initially. He's drawn wide today, but that may not be an issue if they come stands-side.

Severus Alexander, 1pt EW @ 12-1, 3.14 Pontefract.

Severus Alexander might have needed his recent return to action at Lingfield (AW) when returning from five months off. When last seen on turf in April he finished third at Pontefract over 2m5f on ground that might have been quick enough. He drops to 2m2f today with stamina evidently no issue, and he's 5lb below the mark he won off in Ireland on soft ground in 2019.

Wots The Wifi Code, 1pt EW @ 12-1, 5.15 Pontefract

Wots The Wifi Code was quite impressive when winning at Ripon last month over a mile on good to soft, when overcoming a wide draw to chase a decent pace, before being ridden clear from 2f out and winning by over 3 lengths. The runner-up Mikmak won on his next start.

Wots The Wifi Code hasn't managed to win off his revised mark in two starts since on better ground, and while I'm not sure how testing he wants the ground (0-3-6 on soft ground), he is of interest back on a softer surface.

Western Alliance, 1pt EW @ 7-1, 2.47 Leicester

Western Alliance was seemingly a little disappointing on his handicap debut at Bath (good, 10f) when turned over at odds of 5-4, however, that form doesn't look too bad now given he was conceding 6lb to the easy winner Amnaat, who has since finished second in the Cambridgeshire off a 12lb higher mark. It could also be that easier ground suits Western Alliance better having won a novice on soft ground at Nottingham over 8.5f  in May, and then gone close under a penalty over 10f at Newbury on good to soft when probably shaping a little better than the bare result.

He's returning from two months off today on what is likely to be quite testing ground, so fitness is a concern, but this relatively unexposed son of Kingman out of a Listed winner, remains of interest.

Shanghai Rock, 1pt EW @ 15-2, 4.32 Leicester

Shanghai Rock seemed to handle the heavy ground well when a winning a nursery at Windsor last October when trained by Richard Hannon, probably doing well to win given he didn't get the clearest of runs as the runners crossed towards the far rail. Today will be the first chance he's had to race on similar ground since, and he can race off a 12lb lower mark, on this his second start for Robert Cowell.

Excelinthejungle, 1pt EW @ 14-1, 4.58 Kempton

Excelinthejungle was returning from over six months off when seeming to find the 5f round Lingfield an inadequate test two weeks ago, having been slowly away, but he was noted making a little late headway.

He ran well to be second over 7f at Kempton last October to Frow, to whom he was conceding 9lb, and who subsequently improved to be rated 29lb higher. He has gone close over 6f at Southwell, so hopefully this intermediate trip won't inconvenience and that recent pipe opener has set him up nicely for this assignment.

Montaqem, 1pt EW @ 20-1, 7.00 Kempton (4 PLACES)

Montaqem looks a little overpriced today based on his latest start over C&D given he didn't get a clear run at crucial stage and then took time to pick up before finishing his race off well. The draw could have been kinder this evening, but he drops slightly in grade and can race off the same mark.
