Eric, My advice is to have a 200 point pot and lay them to win 10% of it. I’m still jogging along nicely on Boris’s £200 Winter Fuel Allowance. I really am only betting for fun with someone else’s money. Honest.

hapsan, I might just give it a go with a loss-limit as I wait for a football play.
It might just run for a while and keep me from looking at games that I shouldn't be looking at. Having said that, I'm getting better at sitting on my hands. As for the stakes, I've thought about that, and I wonder if laying to LOSE the same amount might be better, meaning that my lay stake would rise and fall according tho the odds layed. Yes I'd win less on the bigger priced loses when they lost but I'd lose less when they won. Am I over-thinking this? Happy, do you only lay a horse that is a hat trick seeker, what about a horse that has won it's last 3 and is going for a 4 timer, is this a lay or a no bet, also if a hat trick seeker and one on a 4 timer in same race do you lay the hat trick seeker or no bet.

I hit on the idea because I often backed horses that had won their last 2 and they always seemed to lose. Nothing more sinister than that. One interesting fact is that over the last 11 weeks at no point, if you used a 20 point bank, would you not have been able to carry on. These are the simple rules :- RULES 1. Lay any horse that is going for a hat trick at odds NO BIGGER than BFSP 6.00 2. Anything bigger than BFSP 6.00 – NO BET 3. Two or more horses running in the same race – NO BET 4. And backing them would have won you money before commission (the longest price winner accounting for 200% of that profit!) but would have lost you money after it. That should have been that (end of thread) - but there was a "purple patch" just before the thread was started - so like most "systems" a short term positive trend made it look like it was worth pursuing despite the (long-term) facts proving otherwise. If w/c 22nd October hadn't been a massive "outlier" this thread would not even exist. It's pretty much what deceives all "system chasers" imo - see a short term trend, convince yourself that you are "up" by that amount (even though it was prior to you starting the "system") - spend an age not wanting to believe that you are slowly just reverting to the norm (i.e. losing to commission). If the purple patch (that you didn't actually play) was a really good one, it will take a while to lose the (pretend) profits from the initial period that brought it to your attention. It's been interesting though and if you are a recreational gambler, losing very slowly to commission isn't such a bad thing. Management, I was attracted to this because of my fascination with the numbers involved with handicapping and, it kind of made sense, but, as with football, you have the highs and the lows. "Trends".

Hi Eric - agree it's a starting point - but then again there are thousands of starting points!
You could start with top weights in Handicaps, Horses with Headgear first time, Course and Distance Winners - the list is unlimited! Some will win, some will lose. But ultimately beyond whatever is your starting point - you will have to exercise some judgement! (imo). That will involve a relationship between the chances of winning (iyo) and the PRICE. Whatever your approach, Grinding out a consistent (long-term) profit will unfortunately never be so simple as "back all of these" or "lay all of those". Agree with that Tony - If I was looking at a list of Hatrick-Seekers - I would probably want to back some (depending on the price) and Lay some (depending on the price). We already know that backing all of them (Over time) or Laying all of them (Over time) will both result in eventually just losing to commission (especially if you do it to BFSP). A combination of Backing the right ones (at the right price) and laying the right ones (at the right price) would be the only way (long term) to make a profit. Lists are fine - systems are a waste of time!

Management you are absolutely correct on all counts. You just told why most of us, yourself not included, I suspect, are losers.
I suppose, at first glance, it looks easy and the fact that many see professional gamblers as the "money for nothing club" riles me greatly. There so much to know,learn and make sense of. Back in the day, for me, the handicap system was the be all and end all, and yes, I burned some oil. Failed miserably of course, accepted my failings and put it behind me. I didn't ever, would never, jeopardize the payments of rent/bills etc. that may be why I shall never get ahead of the game, the bottom line is that, by nature, I'm not a risk-taker. Eric - the glory days are long gone (2000 till about 2006 for me). Anyone making a substantial/worthwhile wage on here now is effectively working for Betfair (whether they know it or not).
