Thanks for the comments guys, good to get back on track.
I thought Dubai Silk was going well, but she didn't find much at the end. The winner looks a nice prospect and will defintely go on to better things. |

Happysandwich,
I'm not going to claim i thought Maid of Spirit would win, but i did state looks of particular interest. Speedily bred, she was a bit green, but picked really well and won easily in the end. The time was good as well, in fact, compared to the 'standard' it was best of the meeting. She was entered in a class 4 race at the weekend, it wouldn't surprise me if she turns out half-decent. I will keep a look out for her next run. |

Good morning guys from a rainy southern Sweden.
I'm back in the office today, so doubtful i will post a lay for this afternoon. I'm not a fan of AW, but Ryan Moore could have a good day at Chelmsford. Early morning riser, Thank you. Lampus, I was looking for a horse by that name initially. Sadly i can't see them from here Summary of lays (all stakes to win £50 per day): Progress 1/2 Daily profit £50.00 ![]() Running p/l -£14.00 ![]() |

Winner done it nicely, suited by the ease in the ground and a good gallop and aided by the rail. I think the rain softened ground made it difficult for Dubai Silk (by Helmet, record on easy ground is average) who raced a bit freely in the centre of the track. The second ran well just being done for finishing gears, a step up in trip will suit.
The race has rated nicely enough. Indian Tigress 83 Maid Of Spirit 80 Dubai Silk 78 Maximum Power 74 Poyle George Two 47 Foxy Feeling 32 80 for a filly on debut is perfectly respectable and she will improve, also it suggests Indian Tigress has actually improved for the drop back to 5f (by 3lb), but I feel this is purely because of the ease in the ground. This filly is a soft ground horse but looks a solid mid 80s horse and will benefit from 6f. The 3rd has ran pretty much the same race as it did last time out. Running within 1lb of that effort, but may be better suited to a faster surface. The one to note from the race is Maximum Power who is from a small yard. Far too keen over 6f on debut, he weakened tamely that day, but today running green he ran on nicely for a hand ride. A vast improvement on his debut effort, posting 74 here, he could be open to further improvement and whilst his pedigree suggests he will get further he still looks on the weak side. Another whose pedigree speaks ease in the ground. I would personally throw the handicapper a headache if I trained this horse and run him over a sharp 5f (Wolves, Lingfield, Catterick, Thirsk or Bath) and let him get outpaced in a normal grade of race. The handicapper would then possibly allude he was a shade flattered at Windsor and may give him a mark in the high sixties but no higher than 70. Of which I would then be very interested in him in a 0-70 over 6f especially on a galloping track with ease in the ground, with him being more race experienced. Whilst the winner will be a nice horse, she will be hard to place for Clive Cox and I no doubt feel he would have rather her come 2nd or 3rd. In a novice she would have to shoulder a penalty and on his blog he alluded to her needing juice in the ground so they may have to be patient, and whilst 80 is a decent debut, going straight into listed class will make things very tough and she could end up getting a higher mark than she needs. Again I would go 6f on the all weather with her, and hope unless she wins impressively, she gets a mark in the low 80s to make her of interest in backend fillies handicaps and have natural progression to improve. I think the 2nd will not struggle off a mark in the low to mid eighties and would not be surprised if connections looked at the valuable 0-95 fillies handicap at Doncaster at the Ledger meeting, where you normally get ease in the ground. The 3rd will get a mark of about 80, which is as good as she is. She would need to improve to win off this mark, and will be fast ground dependant. The winner if placed right is definitely of interest and the 2nd and 4th can definitely be taken out of the race, but much will depend how sensible the fourth horses connections are in terms of where they go next time, to make most of what could be a who could slip through the handicappers net. Good luck if you're laying today Andrew. |

Andrew agree Ryan could have 2/3 winners but a couple will be short. Mark Usher has had 37 horses from 73 runners in the first 4 at Chelsmford, and his horses run very well there in the right grade. His All About The Pace (4.00) takes a drop into selling handicap company today and has been running okay at this trip and slightly further at Lingfield but wasn't suited by a slow riding surface on a couple of occasions. Chelsmford rides quick and I think that's what this horse wants. It's around 7/2 today but it runs off 47 in a very bad race and Shane Kelly rides the track well and is an unusual booking for the yard. Whilst not much, I think this could be a little better than it's mark and the drop into selling handicap means if it doesn't win, it can be claimed for £3000 I think! She has a fair pedigree related to a couple of useful winners and looks the type who could do okay low grade hurdling, so I could see her getting claimed if she got beat and ran well at the basement price. But I can't see this out the 4 today and will be betting 4 place, plus 3 place and to win. I think this is a decent bet today and given Marks horses seem to improve running at Chelmsford, I can see this one getting it's head in front in a desperate race, and at the very least go very close.

"the drop into selling handicap means if it doesn't win, it can be claimed for £3000 I think"
Clearly states in the race conditions that the claiming price is £8,000. |
|
By:
Minimum claiming price £8000 in a 0-65 selling handicap ?? That has to be a mistake, nothing would get claimed on those terms. Normally selling handicaps are £3000 to be claimed, starting bid £3000 at Auction.
|
|
By:
At the post race auction the minimum sale price for the winner is £3K, but it does state the minimum claiming price is £8K for the others - presumably because it's a handicap.
|
|
By:
@GeorgeB
I can see what the racing post has listed but I doubt it's correct. Most sellers are £6k to claim one if beaten, some 8K if better class. But the Selling handicaps are far weaker than these as limited to horses rated 0-65. Nobody on earth would claim a 4yo 60 rated horse for 8K. There have been selling handicaps at Brighton and somewhere up north recently, which have been £3000 to claim a beaten horse which is the norm in a selling handicap of this grade. I've emailed the BHA asking for the correct race terms, as putting an 8K tag on a selling handicap is awful business for the track, it just doesn't seem right, I think this is inaccurate information by the Racing Post in terms of the minimum claiming price. |

All About The Pace and Dora's Field both got interesting rides lto imo. Imo Marquand had a shocker on Dora's Field, made a massive move out quite wide on the home bend, looked like she would win only to hit the brick wall inside the final furlong. Must have gone close to winning had she been ridden to see her race out better.
All About The Pace probably brings the best piece of recent form into the race, being run down only late on at Lingfield by a couple of unexposed 3YOs, and she raced from out of the handicap that day too. Was it a good or bad ride by SDS? Dropped in initially from a wide draw, maybe his hand was forced as she was keen, but made a move out wide from 6f out to eventually get to the front 4f out, and then stuck to the ? dead rail in the straight. It looked a good run in defeat so probably a good ride imo! |
|
By:
The point about it being a handicap is that they can't put their horses in say for example 3lb below the standard weight so it can be claimed for £5K, therefore they've set a reasonable price for the grade and the prize money on offer.

Andrew,
Apolgies for this, but this self appointed, verbose, know all has to be pulled up by somebody. |

@The Anorak
Thanks, I actually find that staggering. There is no chance of any horse in that race being claimed on those terms. Appreciate it might appear to owners wanting to run their low grade horse in a race they can try and win without being at risk of losing said horse, but it's poor by the course, as sellers and claimers are there to create business for the racecourse, and those terms make that extremely unlikely. Thanks for posting the terms however. It seemed very odd to me, as it didn't match up with terms in most selling handicaps, but I guess that's the courses decision. |

There are seven more selling handicaps shown in the official program book online this year - all of them have a claiming price higher than the auction starting price, and none has a claiming price lower than 5,000 gns. Two of those are at Brighton and both of those have £6,000 as the claiming price.
|
|
By:
Okay thanks The Anorak. Must have been £5000 and not £3000 I had seen in a race, I do recall in the past there have been £3000 in selling handicaps as I claimed one for an owner of Jim Bests a couple of years ago which was in for 3K in a selling handicap and that was around Brighton.
But thanks for posting the full terms. Used to have a log in for Racing Admin when it was in it's old format, but not re registered since the site has changed as no longer have a horse in training which I did last year. |
