An abundence of racing from UK and Ireland today, 8 meetings no less, where do all these horses keep coming from.

Good Black type flat races at Haydock, York, Goodwood and The Curragh (with the Irish 2000 guineas) reasonable cards at Chester and Salisbury, and a couple of average NH meetings at Cartmel and Ffos Las. For compulsive gamblers there's even a morning card at Dortmund.

I like Invincible Army (5.2) as a back bet in the Sandy Lane stakes (3.25 Haydock) and think he will do well in decent sprint races this season when avoiding Harry Angel and Battaash.

I'm not convined about Elarqam about in the 2000 and may lay him.

Staying on the flat for the lay today, in what looks a nice 2 year old maiden stakes.

4.05 Chester Key To Power

A once raced, 2 year old Slade Power filly, trained my Mark Johnston. who ran well in a 5f maiden at Thirsk last Saturday, finishing a 2.5L behind Queen of Bermuda. The winner (4/6f) had finished 2nd in a better race at Ascot on debut, and that form is working out well, with the 3rd winning easily at Windsor on Monday. She always looked the winner at Thirsk.

Taking on a MJ fancied 2 year old is often a risk, and this one is no exception, but i feel there are several reasons, even though there are no correlated form lines with others for comparison.

Key To Power led for 4f and stayed on, but the 3rd, 4th and 5th were with her in the latter part of the race, all finishing close enough. Form of the others (precluding the winner) is unknown as they were all unraced except one, My Excelsa, who had finished 4th of 8 in a small race at Kempton.

Her main rival today is the 2 year old colt, Vange, trained by Richard Fahey who's 2 year old winners can do no wrong at the moment. He ran really well over 5f at Beverley when just touched off by another MJ colt, Deep Intrique who had the experience of 2 previous races.

Deep Intrique has been favourite in all 3 of his races, twice at odds on, and may have come up against a decent type in his second race, ironically trained by Richard Fahey. Taking a line through Mujom who he beat 3L in that race, may have improved since as he beat him 5.75L LTO (unless the other has regressed). His debut run in the Brocklesby could be excused as it was heavy going, but he still finished 2nd to Izzer.

I consider Deep Intique to be a sufficiently good yardstick for 2 year old form and he has some decent entries.

Vange was slowly away and held up as a consequence, but stayed on really strongly at Beverley (a stiffer course than Thirsk) and looked as though he would appreciate another furlong (6f today). My opinion is the extra distance will actually suit Vange more than KTP, even though both stayed on, and i appreciate the filly receives 5 lb.

Reviewing the Beverley results over 5f races that day, and based on 'standard times' Deep Intrique was 2nd fastest of 4, and much quicker than the other division, but this is only useful for guidance.

As Vange raced 4 days earlier than Key To Power, he's also had a little more time to recover, although this is minor.

The other 4 are also colts (including a newcomer owned by Dr. Marwan Koukash who loves runners at Chester) and must also be considered, it's not a 2 horse race by any means, although i expect the main 2 protanganists to figure at the finish. Irrespective of this, layers still have 5 running for them.

Both trainers must have a good idea of where they stand today, having had runners in the two races, so any late betting moves could provide a clue, but i don't have that luxury with this thread.

The filly may lead (not the best draw in 4) but i think Vange will have learned from Beverley, and be much closer to the pace today.

Although a risk, i feel my comments above are sufficient to consider the filly a lay.

Lay @ 3.60

Andrew, as a matter of interest, do you ever look at the trotting races in Sweden there have been some very good horses produced there. I was lucky enough to be at the Prix D"Amerique in Paris when Queen L won in 1993 also when Ina Scot won in 1995 this the most prestigeous trotting race in the world. I also consider trotting is far superior to flat racing. But that is my opinion only.I think a man with your capabilities could take it apart. As a parting shot I have to say a MASSIVE WELL DONE with your selections, A terrific performance GOOD LUCK!

dt01,

Thank you for your comments.

I never play trotting these days, but in the past when i've worked here, i used to go to a local track, Mantorp. I've also seen the Elitloppet at Solvalla in bygone years, that incidentally is on this wekend, as you must know.

I've seen Queen L, and you may remember Mack Lobell, another champion. I actually backed the latter in the semis and final Grin

I have to disagree about trotting being superior, but each to their own etc Wink

Good luck.

Lampus,

Not sure yet, i've heard a rumour that Hitler wants to invade Russia, and he's already in Africa, so his army must be useful.

Conversely there's rumour that GB boffins are currently looking at a round metallic bomb that apprantly bounces off the ground. This is a concern to me, so i would hold off any bets at the moment and move to Sweden.

Readers are probably aware the lay was a NR, sadly as Vange won (expected) by 7L (not expected). I could have used Irish 2000 Guineas 2/1 favourite Elargam (mentioned in my lay post) as a reserve, but didn't think of it at the time Sad

Not so many races to choose a reserve from, a few large fields at Salisbury, and I don't like anything Ffos Las, so i've chosen one of the later races on the afternoon card.

Haydock 5.45 Dayaarna.

No time for a lengthy write up, but he's generally a front runner, as is Lucky Deal, so they could actually ruin each others race and set it up for one of the others.

A good run on debut in 2017, and in my opiniom is actually better form than his 2 wins on the AW. Not really sure if he really progressed from that first race. May need the run, but will probably improve in time, and he's meeting 4 race fit rivals today.

Realistically, layers have 3 running for them, 2 of those Mark Johnstons, maybe one making the pace ? The outsider can't be ignored completely, but I think Silvesters mount, Baileys Excelerate can win. Good luck.
