The late John Mulhearn who owned and trained Galmoy, I think he was the only Irish-trained winner one year.
Joy and Rusty carrier who had numerous horses with Michael O Brien, King Spruce among them. They also often rode their horses in bumpers with some success but t.b.h. were no J.J. Codds . |

Those mauve colours of Team Havana/Andy J Smith. Had horses with B Meehan and P Cole. And disputes with one or two others.
Does anyone know what happened to Ken Higson? There are some hilarious stories about him, but you'd be wary about recounting some of them if he were still around. |

Ken Higson owned Karinga Bay, I believe - became a decent National Hunt Stallion.
Actually, is the sire of Gold Cup winner Conegree. Had horses with Denys Smith - before spreading his wings down south. |

and Andrew in Sweden, my old micro economics prof, Ric Van de Plerg, a brilliant, brilliant Dutchman whom I sometimes still bump into around Brighton, and who has gone onto big things, was the son of one of Honey End's owners and we used to spend more time talking about horse racing than stupid micro stuff.
Some on here have questioned the ownership. I am sure it is true. It may not have been official but it is true. |

I remember interviewing Bill Marshall once at Garrison Savanhah racetrack, about 6.30am in the morning, I sneezed and my front teeth (which were false loose from cricket) came flying out and fell at his feet. Bill didn't even notice!

Honey End made his racecourse debut as a 3yo for Herbert Blagrave at Newbury on Newbury Spring Cup day in April 1960. Also making his debut in that race was Minute Gun, who won the first running of the Long Walk hurdle 5 years later.
Honey End was bought off the flat for 2,500 guineas for a Mr Pugh, and given to his daughter, Miss J H Pugh, in whose name he subsequently ran, first over hurdles for one season for L Ewell, and then over fences for Earl Jones, for whom he won plenty of races, mainly on fast ground at the beginning and end of seasons. He then switched to Ryan Price not long before the infamous '67 Grand National, reportedly to make sure that Josh Gifford (Price's jockey) would ride him. (Gifford had ridden him in his first few wins as a novice chaser for Earl Jones in '63). He ran in the National, on the card at least, under the ownership of Mr C Pugh. HV perhaps knows more. I believe the Dutchman's name was spelt Ploeg, but I guess it sounds the same. |

Onlooker - Those Tony (A J) Richards colours also included a Black and White check cap.
The G J van der Ploeg colours were Green, broad White stripe and sleeves and Orange cap. I think he had a couple of good flat horses too. |

i would love to but still in china. i get such a kick, still, out of going to fontwell, brighton and plumpton. big fan of the fish and chip shop near barnham station and the local co-op there has a surprisingly good wine selection and flowers, if you happen to catching the rattler home a winner
plumpton and it is back to ditchling for a drink well brighton you can do what you damn well like as i'm sure you know, though i'm tipping the North Laine area just down from the station, so many fab places around there now |
