Ronnie set me off and I got carried away, It was definitely a Ryan Price/ B Taylor/Demetrious combination. Romani was one of the words.Other word also began with R. Think it won the Windsor Castle. Sainsbury's Languedoc I'm afraid.

Well done chaps. Romeo Romani - Norfolk stakes first time out. People forget (Well Lord Oaksey never did) just what a great flat trainer Captain Henry Ryan Price was. My Uncle Jack was convinced he only took up training flat racers to prove to the Jockey Club that he was a "proper" trainer. I met him several times, although as a kid/teen, he was never less than gracious, although a bit intimidating.

Ken Higson is a shocking omission imo. I hope he is still with us. Sheikh Ali Abu Khamsin came and went over jumps and what about Peter Bolton (!) who was the original developer of Whitsbury Manor Stud where Elsie trained, though I seem to recall Nick Mitchell was the first retained trainer. And generally this wonderful thread reminds me of Robert Sangsters remark that "The best way to make a small fortune out of racing is to start with a big one." |

Well done ged - you are as close as is reasonable... Emerald Green, Royal Blue sleeves, White cap with Green (but not Emerald Green) spots on cap. The colours are still registered. Actually if you play around with the colours you can get very close with a set that are still/now available.  ----------- THAT - has already been done. Massive National Hunt owner - David Johnson - he of Martin Pipe fame ... Simply swapped the Green body and Blue sleeves around - whilst retaining the White Cap with Green Spots. He obviously was looking for some of Sangster's luck to rub off on him.  |

As for Harry Demetriou, his first horse was, I think, Latin Melody, who finished 3rd in the Queen Mary in 1972. She was trained by Sam Armstrong in his last year of training, and also gave his son Robert his first winner as a trainer when winning as a 3yo at Warwick in April 1973. That may have been Harry's first winner too.
He then had a few with Clive Brittain, including Olympic Casino (Harry was, of course, a Greek, who owned casinos), and Sportsky. The latter tried hurdling with Ron Smyth, but returned to Brittain to run on the flat. It was in 1977, I think, that Demetriou began to have his horses trained by Ryan Price, including the first offspring of Latin Melody, Nelbi (who's best win was probably in the Erroll Stakes, one of the 2yo races on the Saturday heath meeting of the 1977 Ascot meeting). Innini was perhaps the best of Latin Melody's offspring, who also ran for Demetriou/Price. She won the St Hugh's at Newbury, and was placed in the Princess Margaret and Fred Darling. Later offspring of Latin Melody were trained by Henry Cecil for Demetriou - these included Little Deep Water (3rd in the Lingfield Oaks Trial in 1985) and Van **** Brown (2nd in the Queens Vase to Baynoun in 1984). |

The Hitchens had plenty with Jenny Pitman; don't see many of theirs these days. Raymond Anderson Green seems to have scaled back a lot. And there was that mortgage shark, Fergus Wilson, who'd always run no-hopers in Championship races. The sport may not miss him. |

Brown and White quarters. Flat and NHunt Many with the Foodbroker prefix (Fancy, Flyer etc) Also Chemist Broker and numerous items they dealt in (Plax?) Was a good friend of Josh Gifford, Crump family, Harwoods. Passed away about 15 years ago, only a couple of years after the family made national news, when Desmond's son was kidnapped. The family, used to the highlife, were no business people and the company soon fell into ruin. |

ronnie how old are you .. ?...YEARS AGO the rail at group 1 tracks they would stand any hot pot for 30k today if you are a face you would be lucky to get 500 on..why they dont what to know they have no risk fobs thats why i dont go racing any more

People forget (Well Lord Oaksey never did) just what a great flat trainer Captain Henry Ryan Price was.
It was a Capt HR Price runner in the Grand National that got me initially involved in racing as a slightly underage first time punter. The horse was Honey End, who could be classed as an unlucky loser (2nd) in one of the more well known Nationals. In the same year, Hill House (also trained by HRP) was the centre of media attention after winning the Schweppes easily and came to the attention of the stewards. The horse tested positive for a form of steroid, but it transpired later that the horse was capable of doping himself due to naturally high levels of the steroid and HRP was exonerated. |

The Tony Richards colours must have lasted 40 - 50 years. The likes of Radetzky,the lightning quick Standaan,both with Clive, then on to Village Star with Fabre, then a few half decent ones within the last 15 years.
Also Mrs Olive Jackson who had a few with Fred Winter,most notably Midnight Court. Her silks looked more like sweater material than silk. |
