grey shark - only cos I went back to check the proper colour descriptions
Mind you, the informed Christian name and Sabin du Loir trump that easily. Good stuff . |
By:
After Roberts death sadly the famous Sangster colours all but disappeared.
By:
I think I may have posted this before. If so apologies. The Sangster colours are hugely well known, but when asked hardly anyone can describe them accurately. Go on have a go! You need to be very precise to be correct.

Charlie Wacker III ("owner" of 1997 1000gns winner Sleepytime) went on the run soon after he was indicted in 1993. First he claimed he was too ill to travel (from London, where he lived, to Chicago to appear in a federal court. His lawyer said he had had a fax from Wacker's cardiologist in London saying that as he had had open heart surgery in the last 2 years, he was unable to travel to the US (although he had been found to have stayed in a hotel in LA just 4 months earlier)). Then he disappeared. They never found him, and appear to have given up looking for him in 2002. By all accounts he fled to South Africa where he was looked after by his grandson, in a little place by the sea called Hermanus, near Cape Town.
Here's the notice to move to dismiss his indictment, in 2002... http://infospigot.typepad.com/wacker-dismissal.pdf His horses ran under his name until around 1993/94, then switched to the Greenbay Stables name until 2005. Then just the one ran under the name "Estate of Charles H Wacker III" in 2007 (for John Gosden), so perhaps that indicates he died around then - or maybe he became legit again! He'd have been 85 in that year. Here's some of what Charlie was running from... - Did not pay more than $1.9 million in personal income taxes from 1981 through 1986. Authorities said that Wacker filed false returns from 1983 through 1986 and that in all other cases he under-reported income or overstated business losses. Authorities said that in four of the six years for which Wacker's taxes have been questioned, he paid no income taxes. - Used corporate fronts in Panama and Hong Kong to hide millions of dollars in assets, including cash, real estate, racehorses and income from his racing activities. - Funneled more than $400,000 of his mother's money through a London-based company that Wacker told the IRS was used for research on a new rechargeable battery. Officials said he pocketed the funds then evaded more than $3.25 million in taxes due on his mother's Lake Bluff estate after her death in 1987. The details of the intricate, decade-long financial dealings allegedly were contained in a looseleaf binder that Wacker kept, the indictment said. Government sources said that it was from those records and from informants close to the millionaire that the government's case was built. Those informants told authorities how Wacker and his associates would refer to the sprawling off-shore holdings as "Gerard Sherman"-allegedly a personal code for a network with dealings on three continents, including part ownership of a casino in London and bank accounts in Zurich and the Channel Islands. "It was like a carnival shell game," said one federal law enforcement official. "If you keep the pea moving, you never lose it. In this case, Mr. Wacker moved cash, horses and real estate from country to country, bank to bank, company to company in an attempt to avoid his taxes. Now the game is up." |

My memory is a bit cloudy , but do I recall a Geoff Hubbard owning/training horses that carried colours like the Hibernian FC shirt ( green body with white sleeves ) . And was there a connection with James Adams , who also owned/trained .

There was horse in the Hubbard colours ran the other day.

Andrew - I said you needed to be specific re Sangster's colours. You have correctly identified the four components in your description, but the first two are insufficiently specific, the third is correct and the fourth is plain wrong. Very well done for trying. You need to be a real colours nerd to get this correct. Not that I know one of course.
By:
Emerald green.
Royal blue? - should be St Patrick's I suppose, but I don't remember that being in the description. Green spots - emerald variety. |
By:
Harry Demetriou - from the top of my head he can't of had many horses as all I remember is four good 'uns, all with Ryan Price - Whitshead,Obraztosovy, Dutch Treat and Lake City. No doubt there was a ton of poor ones but I don't seem to remember the colours making day to day appearances, even week to week appearances - light blue, darker blue hoops, wine coloured cap.

By:
who's going to take on the Royal colours when HM stops?
Cant see Charles or William being interested. |
By:
Col Bill Whitbread, Chocolate with a Yellow Cap, some good chasers in the 70,s
Dual Scottish National winner Barona, Beau Bob and Money Market, some I can remember |
By:
Well done ged - you are as close as is reasonable... Emerald Green, Royal Blue sleeves, White cap with Green (but not Emerald Green) spots on cap. The colours are still registered.
Actually if you play around with the colours you can get very close with a set that are still/now available. ![]() |

verbotene liebe
remember at royal ascot many moons ago one of Demetrious starting fav for one of the two year olds and winning on the horses debute cant remember the name |
By:
Alices - Billy Whitbread - more sophisticated than that!!! - Chocolate with Yellow collar, cuffs and cap.
By:
Yes, forgot the collar and cuffs, did think someone had similar colours, Chocoate with Light Blue Epaulettes but may be wrong.
By:
Smartie - Charles will obviously inherit his great great (I think its two greats) grandfather's colours and presumably Charles will pass his own colours to William.
In any event the BHA will bend any rule in place to accommodate what is required. After all they have done it several times for minor Qatari "royals". Prince Harry might even be allowed the illegal Black Velvet cap with gold tassel. |
By:
Thanks for that on Mr Wacker Ged-interesting!
As we now seem to be mentioning the deceased I presume Ravi Tikoo is no longer with us? |
By:
The midget that was known as Terry Ramsden , last seen shuffling (very small fidgety steps )across the floor of Ladbrokes in Gate Street Holborn to place a bet .
By:
Alices, yes, you are right. There are loads of Chocolate with variations, often the Cadbury family
I will try and find it for you but finding "colours for names" is easy, whereas the reverse is hard. |

By:
Ronnie Rails
Rings a bell, Windsor Castle or Chesham, two words and a someones name. Forms books are scattered all other the place out of order and hard to search via Timeform Annuals without being sure of year. |
By:
Ribero - Ravi Tikkoo was defo Lemon and Royal Blue in some combination. I will add it to the list.
By:
Kilbrittain Castle another good chaseer in the Whitbread colours and maybe the last good one to carry those silks.
By:
Ronnie / Verbotene, would the horse be Varingo who won the Coventry ?
By:
Andrew - I think they may mean Lake City the previous year, although it was not first time out.
By:
That's another Varingo ! Forgot about him Andrew. But think the one who won first time out sounded like some sort of Roman name.
By:
Blackbarn - it was two funny sounding foreign words. Hyped for a very short time.
By:
verbotene - so this is a Harry Demetriou horse that won first time out at Royal Ascot? Or what do we have?
By:
Just remembered - but not sure if it was first time out - something similar to Romanus Romani.
By:
Peter Savill owned some top class horses back in the day!
By:
verboten - someone posted on here a while ago - "Hard to get the answer if no one seems to know the question"
So - it may or may not have won first time out, it could have been Royal Ascot, Ascot or somewhere else, it could have belonged to one or another of the Demetriou's. I am out I think, but I bet the answer is easy. I just don't know it. |

Pell-Mell partners had a couple of decent chasers in Cogent and Katabatic, think they were all Red apart from the body which was Red and Purple checks.
