Todays runners...
2:10 Newmarket Kilmah :First crop sire was a useful sprinter down under, the first runner (Deningy) was very unlucky not to win a conditions event at ascot for dave evans when MJ's brocklesby winner could only manage 3rd. Definitely a sire to keep tabs on but a watching brief for me here. 2:55 York Boater: Facile winner at a canter of a kempton mdn when everyone seemed to know at skinny odds,2nd and 3rd strung out and 3rd literally gives a similar line of form to hannons main opposition in betting today.Hope it wins for MJ but it's really not my sort of price, you could argue that hannon's has a bit more subsequent collateral form of substance with other runners but MJ's just might be very useful, this will certainly tell us more.Love Oasis didn't appear to see out 6f at wolves after a decent debut behind the subsequently disappointing fiery character.MJ ran carmague in that race too and this won very impressively at ascot last week so i wouldn't discount this one coming on a bit for the run but you'd really be surprised if it bustled up the principles in this race. 4:40 York Fire Fighting: Last hcp win was back in may 2015 off of 100 since then has managed to land a couple of listed races against lower class rivals and also bagged a conditions race. You have to say this horse has done little wrong, it's just found hcp company very hot as it's mark peaked at 111.Credible efforts running on late to hit the frame at epsom, ascot and goodwood last term. His mark is on the way down though still has to make 108 today (adjusted OR is actually 106 after last run now) and for me on balance it is probably still a tad high as these races always have less exposed dangers potentially on the upgrade. One thing is for sure the predicted fast ground is relished by this horse and it should be capable of a bold show. 5:10 York Mambo Paradise: Managed to win 3 hcps as a 3yo and ran very close in a class 2 off today's mark at MJ's beloved goodwood.Disappointed on final start last season and again on return though the ground/return run could well be used to excuse it.This horse may well bounce back under these conditions but in this sort of class it isn't the sort of one I have a solid angle on. 5:40 York Second Serve: This horse improved for going up in distance with it's first couple of outings to the track and then obviously ran into one in the shape of Stoutes's Across The Stars (now rated 103 after a decent effort behind humphrey bogart nto).Of course the proximity to that hands and heels winner is likely to be very flattering moving forwards but a rating of 78 today could well be manageable now stepping back up in trip for the narrow mdn win.MJ does extremely well with cape crosses as 3yo's and this one may be capable of pulling out a bit more here again piloted by SDS. I'm not playing at Hamilton, Kahrab looked a bit green and short of tactical speed at musselburgh, gut feeling says it may need a bit farther but this track is a happy hunting ground for MJ's 2yo's and many sent here do come on a lot for their last runs so it may be a nervy watch passing this one up. The two in the mdn I have no real angle on.It's dangerous to discount this yards 3yo's on 1 run and they have fired in a few unlikely ones nto, perhaps leyburn just couldn't handle conditions it was 9/1 that day but I can't be guessing with this on that evidence. Thought very hard about Fire Fighting and Kahrab but passed, have decided to play Second Serve in the finale at York.

Good stuff striding & gl with S S. I'm interested in the 2yo race only for my R Ascot interest in the machine Chupalla who was different gravy to Stormy Clouds first time and on the clock/visually better than Boater

Yes Fatlad would be nice to see Boater and chupalla go on to be decent sorts, they certainly knew what they had unleashing them both so early, just hope they aren't early peakers.
I see rythmically is entered in a class 3 11f at kempton 18th May, wouldn't be clambering to back it there ![]()

Great write up striding and very unlucky there. Johnstons older horses have been quite disappointing as a betting angle so far me so far this year, but it was to be expected. I'm really enjoying seeing his 3 yearold progress though. Hope he gets some success in group races with them further down the line

OUCH! last night with Tartan Bute the first real marginal one i have let through. AT least it looks like the 3yo's appear to be coming to hand with turbine managing to win against it's elders on the Newcastle aw debut meet yesterday. The previous evening Miniaturist ran a blinder at big odds in a 3yo hcp at Leicester so all in all I am now more content to start believing more of the 3yo's are at the track to do business when highlighted by my selection criteria in general.
Today we just have a couple of re emerging 2yo's from a recent debut run.Firstly we see the return of Book Of Poetry in the opener at ayr.He was a bit slowly away in the Beverley drizzle but ran through horses and was certainly not beaten up to get within 2 1/4l of the winner that day.I thought it was a likely looking type nto, the over all record of once raced horses in these novice races for the yard is 14-43 (32.6%) and i'm hoping up an extra furlong this one may add positively to those figures. The second runner Mistime showed a bit of speed in what may turn out to be a decent event at york last week. The Godolphin winner (kananee) followed up it's debut win and MJ has a decent line on this form collaterally with a couple of his 2yo's to know what sort of level that is with Mistime. York hasn't been the happiest of hunting grounds generally but MJ has sent plenty of subsequently decent animals there on 2yo debut that have come on for that experience winning next time out. It's currently around 7.8 and at this sort of price I'm happy to give it a chance today though it's quite possible a bit more time and distance will show this horse in it's best light. 1:30 Ayr : Book Of Poetry current price 4.8 4:40 Bath : Mistime current price 7.8 fingers crossed

I've been a bit dubious of the 3yo's Fatlad, considering the slow start he's had with them i've been quite happy getting 3 on the board and another couple ran very well too.Wasn't convinced this was the time to be backing 3yo's quite yet against their elder's but turbine was a worthy winner and as it's a cape cross this in itself is a great starting point looking at this trainer's 3yo's.
I looked at Tartan Bute a couple of times yesterday and unfortunately let it go, as mentioned I'm a lot more confident of the 3yo's now after a couple of good wins and decent showings. The ground could be an issue this week with plenty of rain about, of course every horse is an individual but over all you could plot a decent graph of this yards form with the state of the going.

Like the look of Book of Poetry today yard will have a line to the favourite as Captain Hawk finished a fair bit behind The Last Lion recently after running green.
BOP was taken off his feet over 5 furlongs and was doing his best work up the Beverley hill so the step up to 6 furlongs should suit can see MJ coming into a purple patch over the coming weeks. At the prices it is certainly a play for me today.

The signs with the 3 yearolds are indeed promising. A lot of 3 yearolds and older horses are penciled in to run at Goodwood in the next few days..
An interesting bit I read regarding Johnston and his 2 yearolds. He said he was glad he had got he 2 yearolds ready and out early this as he was concerned by the number of well bred 2 yearolds Hannons yard would have running during the season. Makes me think the early season 2 yearold form is as good as it's gonna get with them.

Striding what are your thoughts for his runners at Goodwood tomorrow? I think he could bag a couple.
150 Yalta - Gets a group 1 entry in the Keenland Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh in August. Prominent in the betting tomorrow and the drying ground should help as well. A lot taken on trust but must be well thought of and taking on one of Hugo Palmers which won 1st time out although that one carries the penalty. 220 Enlace - She returns to her favourite track where she has won 3 times out of her 5 wins in total. All wins have been good or good-firm. Has an entry in the Royal Hunt Cup so would probably need to be winning this to get in. Drawn low which I prefer at Goodwood although people say it does not matter. 330 Bathos - Unlucky last time out when hampered and pushed wide on the bend at Haydock burning up to much petrol getting back on terms and fading into 6th all be it only 5 1/2 lengths from the winner. Time before that reared in stalls at Wolverhampton. Time before that ran on heavy ground. So excuses for last three runs, prior to those runs the Colt chalked up 4 wins on the bounce. Also Johnston won this 2 out of the last 3 years. 400 Dessertoflife- Gave weight to Somehow and Moorhouse at Chester has some tasty group entry's. Another that should give a good account. Some decent prices as well tomorrow so think a few double and trebles ew bets will be the order of the day.

Been a bit rushed but quite like Bathos today, looks an honest horse.Had a bit of trouble last time (not sure it cost it a great deal but certainly not ideal), has a couple of lbs off and sees an ease in grade.MJ's 3yo's first time here in hcps always need a look and i see no reason why this one shouldn't give a bold show.

I've got to play desertforlife around 10/1 in the 4:00 goodwood listed contest for 3yo fillies.
First looking at races like this you often tend to think the unexposed runners are bound to improve past more experienced runners like MJ's, this race has had a mixed bag with plenty already tasting at least listed company so i'm not too bothered on the type that wins this race.MJ is strong with 3yo's in these 3yo listed races 19-85,22% and this runner looks like it was ridden around chester to either test the trip or just for a run, perhaps a bit of both. On that evidence the trip will certainly not be an issue here and I have a feeling we will see a much stronger effort from this german group 3 winner. I think at this price and track this is likely to give a very good account and am hoping it's level may be good enough at this stage against this field.
