I see naps champ Gary Nutting has gone for War Department.
Not the best advert for breeze-ups buys given he cost 160,000 gns and looked a world beater on his debut but has gone totally backwards since. Still, likely to find his level soon... |
|
By:
It was the first one backed yesterday evening.

I was reading yesterday that Gary Nutting has put the £4000 he won from the RP naps comp towards buying a breeze up horse (which has been syndicated through his website).
It made its debut the other evening at Kempton and it was a bit of an eyecatcher (imo) given it looked green / raw - Flood Defence, trained by Chris Wall. |

Never saw it, I'm behind again so owt with less than 8 gets missed.

The jumps have been on a 10 day break so there's be even more Flat meetings than usual

I'm just doing the 4th between other things, 6 meetings ffs, tedious.

Another crock of sh*t unfortunately. Fray was never placed to challenge in a race where the pace held up, while SOS was well placed to at least place but checked out tamely. Jardine will have his work cut to get a win out of her, unless she needs it on the quick side, as it was at Hamilton.

Kristjano, 1pt win @ 7-1, 7.45 Lingfield
Kristjano is in danger of becoming a disappointment, but he is of interest back on a synthetic surface; he was a heavily backed 5-4 fav on his handicap and AW debut last September at Wolverhampton, and although he failed to land the money, he shaped like a sure fire future winner, travelling nicely and running on well for third; he was again heavily supported to recoup losses on his next start at Wolves, but endured a nightmare passage round the inner and lost all chance. Kristjano's only other start on synthetics came at Chelmsford, and although he had no excuses in second, he ran well behind one who would go on to run some sound races in defeat in stronger races of higher marks. Three starts on turf this year haven't suggested Kristjano is a winner waiting to happen, but it could be he's just a better horse on synthectics and if that is the case, a mark of 67 is a workable one, given the two who were just ahead of him on his AW debut are now rated in the 70s having won 5 races between them since. This looks a fair race for the grade and Kristjano has his stamina to prove upped to two miles, but at the prices he appeals as being worth at least one more chance back on the AW. |

cliff horse for me george i'm on again tomorrow.
lto they reckon he did not like the quick ground, but i thought there was something amiss with the horse. ran a cracker at newmarket the time before in a better grade, staying on well at the finish and was a tad unlucky fto at doncaster behind brian ellison's useful always welcome. he's a bit one paced so they are hoping the longer trip will find the winning key. let's hope for a good run. |
|
By:
oh joy, knot in wood, thank god it's you and not chavman after one of his sessions
![]() interesting about the turf runs, you were clearly watching them closer than I was and I see the HQ RPR is on a par with his AW ones. He's by Nayef, which may explain the one-pacedness, so hopefully the trip will help. Good luck to us both! |

When I saw Royal Bajan is running at Nottingham tonight, mackies, I thought of you!
* If anyone's wondering, mackies picked it for one of the team comps at Nottingham one day when it won at a big price! |
|
By:
I remember that. Think it was my first pick in the comp!
|
|
By:
I did give him a second look, as he's handicapped to go close if Cowell has worked his magic during the horse's 2 month break.
|
|
By:
Wouldn't have backed him fresh with his previous yard but wouldnt be shocked if the change of trainer did the trick. Seemed to lose his spark over the winter the move will hopefully revitalise him.

By:
unlucky with peeps, mackies, thought it was coming with a winning challenge
![]() |
|
By:
A good ride but a bad one at the same time I think. He was badly positioned there and he knew it, possibly the timing of the move could have been better but at least he made a move! The horse is definitely not an easy ride so I'll happily take the place money.
|
|
By:
He was bit unlucky in that when he made his move George Baker pushed him out even further
|
|
By:
Speaking of unlucky..thought for all the world he'd won that. Great pick at the price though.
|
|
By:
That was unbelievable
![]() He didn't stop riding but I think Harley thought he had it, just like on Sbraase at Kempton ![]() |

Had a Yankee with my three and yours George. Conceivably all 4 could have won tonight.

Ruby Wednesday, 1pt EW @ 14-1, 8.40 Kempton
Ruby Wednesday has been in the notebook since February on her second start when a strong-finishing second having been poorly-positioned over 7f at Kempton, in what was admittedly a weak maiden, but I was impressed by the ground she made up despite running green, and also being a half-sister to a 12f winner in Germany suggested she wouldn't have any trouble staying further. She has, however, only once raced over further than 7f in four subsequent AW runs and that was on her next start in a little maiden at Chelmsford over a mile when despite racing with the choke out, she just failed against a filly who has gone on to be rated 77. Ruby Wednesday won on her handicap debut over 7f at Lingfield, but needed all of the trip to get up and again left the impression there could be more to come over further; two further AW starts over that course and distance off her revised rating have suggested the trip is sharp enough for her. Two starts on turf over 8.5f & 8f haven't offered much, but the classified she ran in at Nottingham in May has turned out to be a warm one (the first two home are now rated a lot higher and the third has won since), and when last seen at Newbury the demanding ground (times were very slow on the night) might not have suited. A couple of potential negatives are she's returning from a 7-week break (though her trainer has had a couple of winners recently including one returning from an even longer break) and I don't know whether she'll appreciate the surface riding on the slow side, but otherwise I think she's of some interest trying a mile again on the AW. |
|
By:
I was optimistic when I saw there was money around for today's pick, but she failed to get involved, making only laboured late headway. Maybe the run was needed to sharpen her up, otherwise it was plain disappointing.

Alfie's Angel, 1pt EW @ 6-1, 2.20 Beverly
It could be argued Alfie's Angel has been disappointing since his promising debut at Carlisle, having been turned over at evens on his next start at Hamilton, then looked laboured at Ayr when the step up to 7f had looked sure to suit on run style and pedigree (out of a 14f winner). I thought he still looked green at Hamilton and was outpaced but seemed to be going on at the finish, suggesting a stiffer test would suit; while at Ayr, his jockey apparently said the horse was struggling on the soft ground until he got onto a bit better ground in the straight and then he finished off well for third. The runner-up (who was carrying a 7lb penalty) at Ayr has since easily won a Windsor nursery off a mark of 83, which makes Alfie's Angel's mark of 73 look workable, if that form is taken literally. He steps up to the extended 7f round a stiffer track, which promises to suit, and hopefully he can at least hit the frame here, though I will refrain from calling him an EW 'insurance' job! |
|
By:
I think this test will suit your selection today George. My only concern is we get an 'after you Joe' situation with the favourite. Good luck.
