if I remember the archives correctly, the US had negotiated a potential settlement with the Argentinians before hostilities began.
Thatcher would have none of it. The fleet was halfway there and was hellbent on war. Totally unnecessary and many lost their lives to save her premiership. |

We had a Navy patrol boat down there for ever. She announced that we would withdraw it to save a million quid a year. The yanks had intercepts and told her that if she withdrew the ship, the Argies intended invading. She withdrew the ship.

I should also have said that while Germany´s manufacturing base still contributes more that 25% of German GDP, despite competition from Asia, in the UK it is down from 25% in the 70s to 10% today. Britain depends for the largest part of its income (27%), thanks to Thatcher, on the Finance sector, which produces nothing.

Yes and I guess in the final analysis its the politicians who help to make and shape history as opposed to the historians who are just there to record what happens We can probably agree on that if little else on this thread. |
