Margaret Thatcher the most universally well respected politician of the 20th century

if you keep on saying it, like Blair, you will eventually believe it is true....

CC how long do you think the general public would have stood by and allowed the government to pay over inflated wages to workers in the motor industry, coal industry and steel industry. There would have been riots then I can tell you. The union barons were trying to run the country through the nationalised industries they had to be beaten, are were.

You continue to talk blind nonsense Ab.

Destroying our manufacturing industry has not helped the country sadly and flogging off the utilities has left us at the mercy of these greedy bastuds.

In fact Ab I bet Maggie would have sorted out the bankers long ago.

I worked a night shift T, the union was bang against it because they wanted overtime for the day shift instead. What we built at night the dayshift inspectors rejected. They closed the night shift down 6 months later. And the factory not long after.

the uk *england is nothing but a service economy.

germany with its manufacturing base can sell its products all over the world in times of recession.

that women has a lot to answer for.  she had no foresight and only saw the greed in people and has created a mess of a country.

You dopey so and so SP. Our products were so expensive to produce because of the wages they were not competitive. Hence the factories closed and the foriegn workers kept their jobs. Open your eyes ffs.

Germany invested in its future, Thatcher's solution to U.K's long term problem with short term thinking was to flog everything off and let someone else worry about it.
By:

CC manufacturing was being devasted by the unions so she privatised them. It was the only answer. Had the unions had even one ounce of sense they would have seen it coming but all they knew was greed. Germany never had to deal with that.

I notice no-one has offered a better solution that is because there isn't one.

yeast,

you know nothing about people on here and make the assumption that because the mad women is hated that somehow that makes any anti-thatch comment the rantings of a jealous public sector worker.

utter shyte im afraid.

i got my cut price shares, my direct tax cuts, she raised every indirect tax under the sun.  she destroyed communities when the likes of Germany supported those communities, keeping them in work during the hard times,  she destroyed vast swathes of the country and has created the culture that we have now.

ie, chavs with pit bulls etc, she is responsible.

You forget Aberdonia that there were 2 Germany's. The East was run as a nationalised country while the West was privately funded. Where is the East now? That is exactly where GB was heading only some are too blind to see. And yes the Germans have unions but the aren't run by the barons who ran our unions. We have unions now and they work well but they need to work WITH the country not try to run it.

thats a lie btw but even if it is true was it really a good idea just to shut em all down, we have none now thickey a quick look at our balance of payments should tell even a mathematically challenged t1t like u that...what we have left is banks and call centres and millions of folk who have never had any help to recover that the bitches legacy she turned us into servile spoon fed w@nkers like yourself.

Facts - I can form my opinion having lived, worked, paid taxes and been successful during the entire time that Maggie was PM. I'd be surprised if you met any of those criteria laddy

Then be surprised laddy - because so was I ( probably more so than you ). But the difference is I knew what a c**t she was.hth.

Again the usual short term thinking, unions making industry too expensive, solution close down the industry with the unions involved, this is the sort of thinking which has brought the country to its knees.

Watch it Slim I am not spoon fed and neither am I a w@nker. Think yourself lucky I am spending a little time trying to stop you from being a complete idiot for the rest of your life. You should thank me.

There was no way the country could pay the wages the unions demanded. There was no way the country could continue to have power cuts or 3 day weeks. Open your eyes ffs. Why should you or I pay the unions on demand? Oh, and where are these big union bosses now? History, that's where.

brigust, while there may be an element of truth in what you say about Britain in the 70s there is no denying that Thatcher, rather than trying to bring ´harmony´, perpetuated a ´them and us mentality´and actively sought confrontation with the unions -  safe in the knowledge that with the forces of the state and capital behind her there could only be one winner. Even though she knew that it would destroy communities (working class) and would leave the troubled and divided nation that we have today. You cannot deny that she presided over the largest rise in unemployment in British (or anybody´s) history when it rose from 950,000 in 1979 to 3.4 million by 1983.

In the 1970s the UK and Germany were not dissimilar economically. But while Thatcher spent heavily on nuclear weapons and the military Germany, without a military to speak of, was investing in infrastructure, new technologies, training, and retooling. British businessmen meanwhile were sitting on their laurels, smoking their cigars and raking the cash from the reputation of ´made in england´. But the money wasted on weaponry we could never use could have been offset by oil revenues had Thatcher chose to use it in a positive rather than a negative way.

One important difference between the UK and Germany is that the UK has never ever had a system of tripartism, where the government, big business and the unions agree what is best for economic policy and the country and share a responsibility for its success or failure. In many big companies in Germany union reps actually sit on the board - which has never happened in the UK. While Thatcher encouraged dialogue with the CBI, she purposely excluded the TUC.

One of the many lessons that the ''free market'' learns us ( just like the U S A business model), is that its great in the ''boom'' years ( western countries taking advantage of low wage costs in the far east), but what happens when the South Koreans and the Chinese want western living standards ? What many Labour supporters above fail to realise, is that Blair and Brown allowed mass immigration to take place in the early naughties to drive wage costs down ! Well done Tone, Maggie would of been proud of you !

Personally, I would love a new party to form which had as its main policy of buying British goods to re-generate British Industry and manufacturing. I'm sure that with a charismatic leader they could persuade the electorate to pay 10/15% more for home based produced goods... just think of the great British names that have gone, and with the right investment and management could be re-vitalised !
