it is a tricky balance isnt it, we have hind sight, we know what happened to the industries, the bankers and how much malignant damage Murdoch and his ilk have done, even her sucking up to some very dubious dictators could be seen as in the national interest at the time, but as a scot I cannot forgive her for totally decimating my country then doing f all to fix it because we were so reliant on industry she must have known the cost and misery it would bring about and for that I damn her to the fiery pits o the deil himself

she must have known the cost and misery it would bring about
I don't think Thatcher ever thought much about the consequences of any of her policies or actions, certainly not the human ones. Her main motivation was to get to and stay in power at any cost. Look at the many able ministers she either sacked or had no choice but to resign just because they disagreed with her "convictions"? |
|
By:
You are a Scot Slim. Well that just about sums it up. Your country has been decimating itself for centuries without help from the outside. And it is still decimating itself today. What a kn ob. Blame everyone else that's your policy. You are probably on here regularly blaming jockey's instead of yourself.

Souless,no compassion champion of priviledge and greed just another of the working class who denigrated themselves to be accepted"at court" only to find that she was like the rest expendable, dumped on her a--e in double quick time, there wasn,t much in the way of "wailing and gnashing of teeth" then, how typical how hypocritical,as for those a--eholes G Brown/N Kinnock representing mining constituencies fawning all over her makes you want to throw up,I don,t know which of the two is more detestable pos Kinnock as he stabbed the miners in the back.

Brigust she was a long term friend of the disgusting Pinochet and Botha, any comment on this? She was a supporter of Apartheid aswell......i havnt seen the papers this morning but i doubt wether this will be trumpeted from the roof tops...a truly vile woman. |

These were/are the communities I presume who were quite happy to hold the rest of the country to ransom, keep the lights off as long as possible just so they could bring everyone else down to the lowest common denominator? These are the communities where they were people of an age who weren't alive when she was in power celebrating the death of a human being yesterday. Communities and people who 23 years on are still blaming her for the state of their lives. If they are prepared to do feck all for themselves and simply blame someone else then really what do they deserve? |
|
By:
Lest we should forget roobuck these much maligned communities made the ultimate sacrifice in many wars including 2 world wars for what was the cry "freedom and a better to-morrow for all" "cat in hells chance" of that.

so much anger and bitterness on this thread from those who have been unable to make a success of their life. I had to smile to myself at an ex-miners comment on the radio this morning. He said that 30 years on he has finally got closure. Years of wallowing in self pity and Thatcher again gives the sorry miners closure.
|
|
By:
The miners union had an opportunity to end the strike long before they did but refused it. They were intent on bringing the government down so that their lapdogs the Labour Party would take over and they would get their way. Irrespective of what the miners say they know their leaders stitched them up.

What I don't get from all the haters is what is there to celebrate? An 87 year old woman has died after to put it mildly living a rather full life and spending her last days in the Ritz and looks like she's gone out with very little suffering, now if one of your comrades had managed to bump her off 10 years ago I could perhaps understand one or two of you cracking one off but from where i'm looking there's only one winner here, good on you Maggie.

So that's it, Smiley Jack? best part of a quarter of a million men made redundant, communities trashed, families and lives ruined. Damned right they were sorry. http://news.uk.msn.com/margaret-thatcher-dies-brixton-celebrates#image=2 |

You really are totally clueless about what she did to huge sections of our society. She broke them.No humility,no humanity - she couldn't have cared less.Let them eat cake would have been her mantra. |

One of the lasting legacies (imvho) of the Thatcher era is the "I'm alright Jack siociety'' we've become. Giving traditional Labour voters the right to buy their council houses... turned socialists into conservatives with a small ''C'' .
What I find quite laughable, is that people who gamble on an Exchange ( by definition a ''greed'' thing to do) purport to be socialists and idealists ! Perhaps they donate a percentage of their winnings to the many parts of the country devastated by Thatcherism... |
|
By:
Aye brigust1 the miners had a lot to answer for especially in their support of a Labour movement that would trample their granny into the dust to hob nob with high society,it doesn,t mask the fact that she was incompassionate she was for those of priviledge, she used underhand tactics against the miners leader Scargill using the CIA/MI5 to try to dis-credit him which proved to be 1 big lie,she used £12 billion+ of the countries money to acheive this, these are not traits I recognise as being of an exemplary character, how can the country move forward when we laud someone of this ilk,she was just one of many self seekers of all political hues that are in it for themselves or their close cohorts, they gave her short shrift when she became a millstone round their necks so for me what a load of hypocritical bumff
|

By:
hd - don't be ridiculous. Are you saying its wrong for the working classes to have a bet. That you can't be a socialist if you place some money on the result of a horse race.

O k Facts,
good morning btw. Could we have your definition of Socialism please ?.... |

Halcyon days it doesn,t matter one jot what ism its is,what about the millions that made the uimate sacrifice so that others would have a better fairer to-morrow and continue to do so to-day,what and for who are these sacrifices for who benefits from them certainly not the communities that continue to be blighted and who,s sons will be in the majority of those in the firing line.

Barney
Are you 21 ? Not being funny.Just curious |

By:
Money IS God
We are the nasty party We will only look after the rich because the working class do not vote for us Where there is peace we will bring discord We will sell council houses at knock down prices, so private landlords can charge higher rents ETC ETC |
|
By:
Cull all MPs and start again imo, but the vile one spawned the current crop of self interested thieves.
|
|
By:
Barney sadly when you are as deluded and easilt misled as that then there is no hope. I hope your racing selections are better.
And BUSH if you think for one tiny misguided moment the unions were for the working classes you are even more deluded than Barney and that's an achievement I can assure you. I remember not being able to pay my rent because we were out on strike. One of the workers was pilfering white spirit. When the chap on the gate challenged him to drink it he was rumbled. He was dismissed and we were all out on strike to get him his job back. How effing ridiculous. |
|
By:
Another time one of the guys was being clocked out by a mate and was working an afternoon shift on the buses while he was supposed to be at work. A rumour went around that the clocks were being checked at lunch time so he took his clock card with him and clocked it in at the bus depot. What the idiot didn't notice was that it was a 24hr clock at the bus depot. The unions only had us all out to get his job back. Clueless, power hungry idiots.
|
|
By:
No wonder the country was going down the drain. And I bet there are millions of similar stories around if you look.
|
|
By:
I don't think anybody has defended those sort of practices brigust and most of us who are old enough could come up with similar stories. But it was all rather small beer compared with what the bankers did and were able to do because of de-regulation. And of course you will say that happened under Labour, but the idea it wouldn't under the Tories is laughable. All our mainstream politicians are Thatcherites now and THAT is her legacy.
|
|
By:
Blaming Thatcher for the bankers is likely blaming Henry Ford for road deaths or the inventor of the hamburger for obescity SS. The world is changing by the minute but strangely you blame someone who stood up for this country against the ruinous unions and you totally and completely unable to see what damage they have done. Take off the blinkers SS, they do not become you. It was the unions who wrecked the mining industry. It was the unions who wrecked the car industry. It was the unions who wrecked the steel industry. They are the facts.
|
|
By:
After mature thought overnight I have accepted you can't blame Thatcher for everything. She was a symbol of changes that were happening worldwide but she, with some help, was responsible for ensuring we went further in one direction than most. Funnily enough it is me who is the conservative with a very small c and Thatcher and co who were the radicals. I accept there was need for some change but she and her like threw out the baby with the bathwater.

By:
I think Scargill and Co have got away with murder. And I think the Poll tax was the fairest tax. I know lots don't but they are just being selfish. Funnily enough blaming Thatcher makes them feel better but in their hearts they know they are wrong. She had the IRA trying to kill her, the unions to fight, raging inflation and ridiculous taxation rates. Because of the state ownership of industry and housing that played right into the hands of the unions. It was totally unsustainable when the unions took their stance against the government.
I remember at work in the late 60's and early 70's talking about how incredible it was how much the car workers were getting. It was over 5 times more than we earned and they were always striking or more. That was before I worked in the car industry in the mid 70's when it was crazy. |
|
By:
So that's why we got s-it cars in the 70s, you worked there brigust.

shows brigust up as a tory sorry Betfair ![]() |
|
By:
^^Oh dear. Where were you then? Probably not even thought about. Another who grew up with a chip on his shoulder and carried it ever since. Grow up ffs.
The car industry failed because you cannot spend the money on labour AND materials. The workerforce, of which I was a member, was overpaid and underworked. To be competitive the materials used were cr ap. The cars rusted to bits. When the 'time and motion' chaps came around we had to do everything at a snails pace. When they left we did our daily quota befoe 11 o'clock and then played games for the rest of the day. I took a university course ffs. BUSH how can it be fair that a couple living in a house has to pay the same as the six grown ups living in the same house next door yet using 3 times the facilities? Answer me that one. |
|

He'll all ways post stuff like that, brigust, he's a one man contradiction, he reckons Fobt's
are the best thing to have happened to the poor, and what ever the fcuk you do, don't mention brigadier gerard , Oh s-it![]() |

If you analyse her term in office she did some great things for many people. But, the bitterness that still resonates in many parts of the country suggests the communities she helped to devastate have never fully ( and perhaps never will) recovered !
Was she radical yes, fair/inclusive... some would argue yes.... but many millions would say emphatically NO ! |
|
By:
Actually I think FOBT's should be banned you idiot. I have never played them and think they are a scourge on society. So don't misrepresent me. OK!
When we finished the day shift the demand for cars was high so they introduced overtime ffs. We finished work at 11. Sat around until 4.15. then stayed on to do an hours overtime. You could not make it up. Later, again becuse of demand, they tried to introduce a night shift but the unions rejected it in favour of more overtime. The management went aead with the night shift and I worked on it. The work we did on the night was rejected by the union guys on the day shift and had to be scrapped. I was doing exactly the same job I did on the day shift. The night shift lasted only 6 months. The UK car industry is now history I wonder why? |
