A society which relies on millions of people working for less than enough to live on is doomed.

You are a Scot Slim. Well that just about sums it up. Your country has been decimating itself for centuries without help from the outside. And it is still decimating itself today. What a kn ob. Blame everyone else that's your policy. You are probably on here regularly blaming jockey's instead of yourself.
.........................................................................................................................................

What an absolutely awful post. No point in trying to educate you, since others have obviously failed.

BTW, "jockeys" is plural. No apostrophe required. That's Scottish education for you, we know English better than some of the English, conspicuously the right wingers.

brigust you and I are I suspect of much the same age. I worked in an engineering factory in Sheffield for quite a while which actually made clutches for the car industry. I would not describe it as slave labour but nor do I recognise your description of where you worked. There were some rather nasty little practices which frankly the union and management connived at tacitly. For instance there were no black machinists, they were condemned to be labourers on about half the pay of the so-called semi-skilled operators. That sort of thing needed doing away with. Later however I became a Careers Officer in the same city two or three years after Thatcher came to power and there were simply no jobs for the children of those factory workers. Unemployment and particularly youth unemployment had begun to raise its head under Callaghan for the first time since the war ( apart from the very odd blackspot ) but Thatcher INTENTIONALLY made it 10 times worse. I will never forgive her for the hopelessness I saw in those kids or indeed that I felt myself.

Put some meat on the bones Alias. Don't just go along with what others have told you. Use your own brains, you reckon you have some. Throwing stones is easy but putting forward a credible argument is that beyond you? Well, is it? Why not try it.

She unleashed and encouraged unfettered greed, excesses in the extreme.
have we forgot the yuppie culture, the brash arrogant young men spending
a grand on a bottle of champagne at lunch hour. The legacy is now the bankers
of today, with million pound bonus'es, for fcuking things up, the deregulating of the bank's, stated by her
and continued by blair and brown, which has spectacularly failed. For which the everyday
people have to pay,  pay for the failed capitalist gambling of a few very rich men.
That's what thatcherism represented

So the unions had nothing to do with it ss? Employers just didn't employ anyone because they were told not to? The jobs didn't dissappear because no-one was prepared to invest in Britain because of what the unions were doing? Misguided SS, sorry. Those wild claims like INTENTIONALLY show just how misguided you are. Tell me how she INTENTIONALLY made youth employment 10 times worse. I'm all ears.

OH you are another blaming Henry Ford for road deaths. Pull yourself together ffs. Whatever system you introduce there are those who will abuse it. Like MP's expenses. I suppose that's her fault as well. I don't agree with bailing out the banks but I certainly don't blame Thatcher for it. That's just being blinkered and lazy.

look they thought the many were getting too much, hence the capitalists actions from that period.they also realised the potencial for profit for the few in BT and exploited it.What will happen soon is that the poor will want the Rich too give up some of there vast wealth(you see the gap between the poor and so called middle class is too big)Expect trouble in the next 10years.Not sure what the vision is for the future by the so called educated elite, but there poor answers too the Banking(death) is there for all too see.

By destroying barriers to free trade, which from other countries was often not free at all but subsidised.
Are you suggesting she was stupid enough not to know what she was doing ?
Incidentally it wasn't the same in the south-east for many years. I took the odd holiday in London during the 80s and out of professional curiosity usually looked at the jobs on offer in Careers Offices and Job Centres. I was amazed at how many vacancies there were at decent wages for unqualified teenagers. We just didn't get those in Sheffield. So just possibly Thatcher did somehow manage to insulate herself from what was going on in half the country, even before the miners strike. But what does that say about her?

I can't agree with that zipper, there were plenty of helping hands.the unions were infiltrated by the bosses even then, many of the self destructing actions that took place were sabotage from within, the working class lost its way, they lost control of the unions and there labour party. They need to reflect and change what is happening now as it did then, possibly new unions need too be born(too many restrictions)and the working class need too look hard at there leaders whom not many trust(too many Eton boys and girls).

Zipper the union demands were even rejected by the Labour Party ffs who suffered 3 day weeks and power cuts. That is why the Conservatives came to power. They were unsustainable but the union bosses wanted to run the country. No business, nationalised or otherwise could sustain it. The unions wouldn't back down even when they had a glorious opportunity to do so they simply wanted to defeat the government. They played on the miners and their unity. But the miners backed the wrong horse and it lost. They should be bitter with themselves because the wages they demanded were untennable. The country was bankrupt and the unions just ploughed on.

I believe in unions but even they would agree they were wrong. And where are they now?

Subsidised? The motor, coal and steel industries were nationalised ffs. Strange.

this is a travesty of the truth.
the 3 day week was introduced by heaths tory government between 1970-74,heath then called a snap election with the slogan 'who governs britain' he lost his majority and wilson came to power with a minority government wilson went to the country and won an outright majority.

I cannot disagree with you Metro but Communism was never going to succeed as it never has throughout the world and that is what the NUM and Scargill wanted. The excesses of today can only be blamed on those taking advantage. No-one else is to blame.

The Car Industry couldn't survive under those conditions and didn't.
The Mining Industry couldn't survive under those conditions and didn't.
The Steel Industry couldn't survive under those conditions and didn't.

The conditions they couldn't survive under were those fought for by the unions NOT Thatcher. You are blaming the wrong person.

Hence the Marxist and Communist clowns who come out of the woodwork dissing her.

I don't 'love her dearly' Saddo but I lived through those years. I bought my first house and raised my children. I remember the power cuts quite clearly. These are all things of the past thankfully. The unions had to be defeated they won every battle and every argument and held the country to ransom. You are blaming David when you should be blaming Goliath. Wilson never took them on and Callaghan only did under pressure.

The heroes of the Thatcher haters really felt the suffering of the people they 'represented'.

Arthur Scragill - had his rent paid in his £1.5m 2nd home for 10 years AFTER he retired. Made millions on franchising deals. Lived in the lap of luxury while the families he caused misery went hungry

Derek Hatton - multi millionaire success story product of thatchers free enterprise

I have different thoughts on communism to most,it is part of the system(the human mind)We work more peacefully if we work together. The capitalist system when it fails needs public money?.
Communism in Russia had the grace too die(unlike world wide capitalism)- which is bankrupt.New answers and different questions need too be asked to solve the crisis(i believe not enough thought was given and it was inside the box thinking)We must treat the virus and the cause else the desease will spread. Full control of the Banks by goverment and debt reduction in the form of devaluation of Housing- property prices(they are not there true value) Instead of giving goverment loans so people can get ripped off and the country go into further debt, why not dictate house prices(cut them in half)and reduce repayments on those that own there own, thus stimulating the economy and putting money back into the working classes pockets to spend? We must also put limits on the growth of house prices(i suggest no more than %10 -%15 of there original new reduced price, this is open too discussion?

Capitalism has momentum, but no direction, it facilitates and enriches the few
at the expense of the many. It's a totally flawed ideology, but it's so entrenched
in every facet of our lives, we no longer have an alternative to it.Sad

I couldn't agree more about the housing market but that is linked through mortgages to the financial services. The way Thatcher is blamed is if they could see this coming but she couldn't. No-one has seen the property crashes and bubbles, no-one. Because of immigration we are firmly part of the EU now whether we like it or not. We have no major industry only a huge service sector where 4 in 6 work. Unless we introduce a major industry that is too big a gap and should be 5 in 6. The other 2 are unemployed or unemployable and the burden on the others is too high when added to housing costs. Something has to give.

InandOUt how on earth will you get the Scots all digging in the same place and same direction? Never been done before.

As you may have gathered Smiley jack I am of the left and over the last 30 years I have probably had 100 friends or closeish acquaintances with roughly similar opinions. I have never met anyone who liked Scargill. A lot haven't got a good word to say for him. He was Maggie's dream opponent just like Galtieri, and arguably Michael Foot. She was a very lucky politician.

Spot on brigust.

I lived through those times and never voted for her. However, I agreed almost wholeheartedly
with her economic policies. They caused hardship but simply had to be done and have been proved to be spot on hence. If she had brought in spin doctors which gave her a slightly more caring image and not
endorsed the pathetic poll tax she would still be in power now!

The lack of intelligence of the UK public and those laughable left wingers just remind me of the anti
grand national' lobby. Delluded and desperate to hate through ignorance. The stuff about Thatcher encouraging greed on here is so funny. She encouraged enterprise, capatalism, wealth creation, free trade which boosts the wealth/prosperity of every individual on the planet.

So ironic the bile for Thatcher who saved our failing economy and the acclaim a war criminal called Blair gets from the general public.

would agree with Brigust about the abuse of power of the major unions in the 70's and early 80's.
Of course workers rights should be defended in the best traditions of a genuine trade union - but many of those unions went way too far defending indefensible actions and behaviours of a few individual workers (as Brigust points out) and calling for mass strikes as a result.
Remember working in admin sections of a then nationalised Electricity Board and the NHS - and was shocked at how little work many people in administrative positions performed. Being protected by overzealous unions, there was no chance of making them more efficient or increasing their work output to something more reasonable.

Brigust mentioned the German unions earlier on this thread. Whilst they protect their workers rights, they also have a bigger stake and keep in mind he success of the industry in which they work, and the companies / businesses that their members work for. Whereas British unions were just all out to protect themselves and their members.... sometimes to their own cost or detriment.

Agree that something had to be done about the Unions and they should have been encouraged / advised to take a more Germanic approach of cooperation. But at the same token, Thatcher went way too far. She was brutal in her desire for complete destruction of all trade unions leaving working classes open to abuse by employers. In that, she was devoid of humanity, understood only confrontation and division, and was the modern butcher of community and social harmony. That's her legacy, imo.

introduce a major industry that is too big a gap and should be 5 in 6.

Globalization has put paid to all most all national industries, owing to vastly cheaper
labor costs in less developed countries. Capitalism does not have a social conscience, that's
not part of what it is, it's plc system worldwide follows the lowest cost base and structures.
It then rewards the victors with large salaries/bonus'es, it pay dividends to the investors,
and the cycle continue's on to the next venture, the exploitation continues irrespective of society
or cultures.
By:

OH that is the next step. Thatcher has started the ball rolling by giving people the opportunity to create wealth but now the rich need to be shown how to invest their wealth. You cannot stop people with ideas getting wealthy and you cannot tax them to the hilt because they will go elsehere but they do need educating about investment not greed. That will come but if they don't do it willingly it will eventually be forced upon them.

Take control of the housing market,we have pay freezes,we have taxes, they control and can control housing, yes many will be more than angry that there house price is cut in half, but if you explain too them that this may save there jobs, give them more money to spend(on other things)and t,and maybe stop riots on the street(or worse war),they may just reflect and understand. This and many other forms of control need too be looked at,instead of going down the same path too collapse. They now distribute public money so that they hope the Banks will lend more? F u c k i n g MADNESS.
