Great Pic of Kipper Lynch Tamberine, that's an old one. He doesn't look much different
We had his livery yard a good few years back, could be seen daily just after evening stables,(sometimes before) walking the country roads just outside newmarket, heading to his favorite watering hole. Hope he's still going strong. |

Good to see Tony Rawlinson's name mentioned by a some of you, I see him from time to time in the watering holes of Newmarket where the likes of David Dinely, Robert Edmonson, Ernie Johnson, Eric Eldin are sometimes sighted & usually in good form.
However, I hear Willie Snaith is not at all well. |

Eric Eldin is Nicky Mackay's grandfather. Dod, When Staff started he used fellow "Wootton" boys Ken Gethin, Joe Marshall, Charlie Smirke etc. Staff retained Geoff Lewis for a long while, and used Geordie Ramshaw a lot. Always gave the boys a chance. David Mould, Bobby Coogan, Jimmy Uttley, Chris Dwyer, Michael Kettleall started there. Lads who rode their share of winners but didnt make it: Johnny Bunker, Tony Curran, Alan Watlow, Brian Elder spring to mind. Must be more. |

Eric Eldins daughter married Alan Mackay, his sons are Nicky and Jamie..no relation to Dennis Mckay,who came from stratford in East London.

Vic Soane, he went on to train that very good horse My Best Valentine who won the Prix de l'Abbaye with Cochrane on board.
He moved to Spain and I met his son on a trip who was working for a property company selling villas, very pleasant bloke he was. Vic was dealing in property as well. |

someone mentioned buster parnell , when i worked at the ins we had a teaser whom i'd ride out just to keep him fit , buster wanted to use it for a mare he had , i took it down and it did the business , never even gave me a pound....

Nice thread, brings back memories!
Johnny Williams... NH jockey, top of his game late 60's early 70's. Rode mainly southern tracks for the likes of David Barons etc. Had a few National rides, notably one on Boom Docker, almost a fence clear in the lead and the horse just stopped one from Beechers (iirc?). |

Great stuff on here, as always when we get a proper thread going. The picture of Ron Hutchinson (next to the great Garnie), reminded me of a 2 year old Ron (for Gordon Smyth?) in the mid sixties. Wore blinkers and seemed run (and win) nearly every week. A flashy chestnut I think, but that could have been my youthful (aged 12/13)enthusiasm. definitely wore blinkers though. I'll remember it tomorrow but someone will beat me before I retire.

My memories of the Sprinter RON - was that he always used to run in the 6 furlong Stewards Cup, at Goodwood - when it was run on the opening day, Tuesday ....
Then he used to turn out again in the 5 furlong Singleton Handicap on the Friday - with satisfactory results.  |

I was always interested in the real little men,the lightweights.
In 63 when I first started following racing the ones who could do 7-0 were Ray Reader ( most of the time),Cliff Parkes ( likewise ).Norman Mcintosh,Sammy Millbanks,David East, Peter ( ?) Povall,Ray Greening and A Carson,whose first name I don't think I ever knew. People have in the past told me Des Cullen,but I don't remember him doing less than about 7-3. Bill Jesse was a bit later. |

Ray Reader - 6-11 L C(liff) Parkes - 6-12 N Mckintosh - 6-12 S Millbanks - 7-0 D W East - Listed but no weight shown (defo a lightweight though as you say) P Povall - 6-12 - Think he might have been a Philip and a top ranked apprentice. D Greening - 7-0 - Think this might be your R Greening A Carson - 6-12 D(es) Cullen (Apprentice) - 7-0 (with Willie Stephenson - no surprise there!!) |

Onlooker - do you know the 2 year old. I think it won 9 or 10 races as a two year old. I am certain it was Ron Hutchinson who rode it and it was very precocious (defo won in May)and quick, and wore blinkers. Had a white blaze and at least three white feet/socks. Thought it was Smyth but maybe not.

Pretty certain D Greening was known as Ray.
Obviously people like Cullen would have done 7-0 or less as apprentices but I don't remember him claiming or riding at 7-0. But tbh I had no interest until early 63. |

Both those SKY 2year-olds were owned by Lavinia Duchess of Norfolk - I think.

Excellent stuff onlooker - That would explain the Gordon Smyth/Arundel link then. Sky Gipsy would be about 1965'ish. And it would also link to Jockey Ron's move from Ireland to be retained jockey to the Duke of Norfolk (see my much earlier post below).
What do you have on Sky Gipsy? - he was very very quick and I think he actually trained on. I definitely saw him live a couple of times (hence the description) but know not where. April/May 65/South East of England. |

blackbarn, a painting of Sky Gypsy from Arundel commissioned in 1965 to Lionel Hamilton Renwick did the rounds of the auction houses in 2004 at Christies for £250 then Bonhams in 2012 for £1,200, someone else obviously liked the horse as well...!
