The horse that Taylor came off had originally been with Michael Jarvis and ran in the Chesham.As with so many that go to HK, it's name was changed. Phillipe Paqeuet ( Nuereyev's jockey)may have had his HK accident on the same horse, though not certain of that.

"Without being rude i think Tony Murray had to have his face rearranged after an accident at liverpool i think." I knew Murray, that accident was at Windsor, got pitched from his mount and smashed his face against a concrete upright. He was in hospital a long time fractured his jaw in about 15 places and lost most of his teeth. Tragic end when he killed himself in his early 40's, took a mixture of drink and pills. His sister Judy said so many things contributed to him becoming unbalanced at the end. Health fears, had ulcers caused by years of dieting. He never got over the death of his father and a brother. Was heartbroken over seperation from his wife Jane. And behind his successful public image he was always worried about failure. His funeral was in Salisbury but his mother banned all racing people from it, she wanted the funeral for family only. |

Hound dog/ workrider;
i know brian Jago well, saw him last week. After 60years in the Epsom area he has just moved. Frank Morby and John McGinn visited him last year. He still hears from John gorton. Geordie Ramshaw is still about, enjoys a chat; Brian rouse has land and stables down near Horsham; Duncan Keith was steward at Banstead Football Club for years; been ill, but still hanging on Last saw Ray reader at a funeral a few years ago, he hadn't aged at all could probably still do 7 stone, I assume he is still about. Good to hear of Richard dicey, knew him in his epsom days. What happened to Alan Bond? The book on the Wootton Family covers most of Woooton, ingham, Smyth's lads etc. I will ask Brian about John Curant when I see him; john was a regular at Brian's parties with Rob. Edmonson, John McGinn, Dennis McKay etc. Happy days. Good luck to all thanks for the memories. |

"Did Alan Bond get the stable jock position at H Cecil's and then lose it..."
Bond was a very promising lad indeed. But not sure what happened at Cecil's. I think basically Cecil gave him his big chance and he wasn't ready for it, or too much too soon (?) but whatever it was it all went wrong in one season. |

The recent victory of Green Laafe at Sharjah brought the name of Alan Bond back into the limelight. The 48-year-old grandfather will be remembered in Britain as the apprentice who won the title in both 1974 and 1975 when attached to Epsom trainer Ted Smythe, who "was better known for his jockeys than his horses", in Bond's words. Employed by Godolphin as a work-rider, he handed in his licence in 1995 after a stint in Germany, but decided to take it out again in 1999 to ride in Dubai, where he partners Satish Seemar-trained horses for members of Sheikh Mohammed's family. Bond has ridden more than 600 winners in his career, including in the Group 2 Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot for Henry Cecil and the late Lord Howard de Walden on Catalpa (grand-dam of Yorkshire Oaks winner Catchascatchcan). Along with Ray Still and Harry Valentine, he was invited to Dubai in 1980 to ride in the country's fledgling horseraces. "It was on the camel track and very much when the bosses wanted to stage it," he says. After returning for the following two years, he enjoyed five winters in Saudi Arabia. Bond has always tried to avoid the cold Newmarket winters, enjoying time in the West Indies, as well as having ridden in Qatar, Oman and India. He marvels at the changes since he first came to Dubai, saying: "It is so big now and the facilities are incredible, both here [at Nad Al Sheba] and in the yards." Bond says he is enjoying his time back in the saddle and is looking forward to a visit from wife Charmaine, who rides work for Sir Michael Stoute, later this week. He speaks proudly, too, of his only son, Noel, who works for BT in Cambridge, and 15-month-old grandson Dominic. |

Alan Bond was The Golden Boy when he landed the Cecil Job,probably wasn't quite ready for it,but it was downhill all the way after that if my memory serves me right.

Ted Smyth used to try and get his boys a good retainer when they had finished.
Duncan got the job at Nightingall's Dicey with Ryan Jarvis and Bond with Henry. In retrospect, the job probably at Cecil's came a bit soon. Ken Gethin has long gone, I saw his wife about six years ago, but don't know if she is around. Her father was trainer Peter Thrale. Walter Nightingall's daughter is living in Australia; I exchanged a few letters with her husband (Walter's son in law) last year. Ted Smyth had some good apprentices: Rouse, Keith, Bond, Dicey, Kettle etc. and a few that didn't make the "grade" but made it elsewhere; bookmaker the late Joe Jennings, and boxing promoter Frank mahoney. |

Whenever you saw Tony Murray interviewed what shone from him was that he was a clearly very intelligent man. His last job would have been racing manager to Arthur Budge who had good horses with Jimmy Fitzgerald such as Uncle Ernie, Danish King and Comeragh King - and many more.It just goes to show that you never know what is going on in someones mind.
