Robert Edmondson was Champion Apprentice in 1972 - with 45 Winners.
The year after Pat Eddery was Champion Apprentice with 71 winners in 1971 Robert Edmondson was thought to be 'the next big thing'. Pat Eddery rode 69 winners in his first season as a 'Full' Jockey in 1972 |

Bob and John Curant were brothers from Fulham.
Apprenticed at Epsom. Bob married the daughter of F. freeman the Cheltenham trainer. John rode for Ken Payne inc. Kithairon. Didnt know Bob, met John a few times, I will try and find out where he is. John McGinn another one from that era has been in Kenya for thirty years, he was back last year and we met up. he then worked for a breeding operation in devon but I heard that job may have finished. |

WR Annesley is/was(?) Richard Annelsey. Trainer Mark Anthony as a 2yo in 1974 (won the Anglesey and Beresford Stakes) - bought by Marcos Lemos in the September and sent to Clive Brittain - beat the hitherto unbeaten Grundy in the mud in the Greenham in 1975.
Is he a member of the Irish peerage? |
|
By:
*Trained Mark Anthony as a 2yo
|
|
By:
He also trained Kirsten Rausing's first winner outside Sweden. In 1976.

Anyone remember David Coats top apprentice from the late 60s, another South Yorkshire lad, Think he went off riding in sweden.

David COATES shared the Apprentice Jockey Title with Richard DICEY in 1968
They both rode 40 winners. David Coates 7st 0 lb - was apprenticed to D H Williams, at Ferryhill, County Durham Richard Dicey 7st 8 lb - was apprenticed to Herbert Smyth at Epsom |

David Coates died about 10 years ago.
Richard Dicey soon ran into weight problems, but now has a business in Australia:- rdiceyfreezebranding.com.au |

By:
From his site:-
About Richard Dicey I have always been involved with Horses in some manner. As a teenager I was Champion Apprentice Jockey in England. At the time managing rides in England, Ireland, Holland, France. As weight got the better of me, I rode for a time in India before immigrating to Australia. In my time in Australia I have managed my own 100 acre Agistment/Pre-Training Centre in Perth where I also broke- in for leading owners and trainers of the day. This is also where I established my Freeze Branding business. I next spent time in New Zealand on the look for a training facility. Instead I discovered Real Estate and quickly rose to top listing agent and salesman in the Auckland area. The weather finally got the better of me and I returned to Australia, locating in Brisbane. I continued selling and buying Houses (including purchasing this stables in Ballina in which i leased out for a few years) awhile until my children were of an age that their desire for a horse of their own got the better of me. Starting with a gorgeous wee Shetland, Gypsy, we went from strength to strength ending with a team of 5 and 7 or so State Showjumping and Sporting Titles as well as EFA Interschool Titles and a swag of Pony Club hardware. he interest in horses slowly grew towards the Racing Industry and my daughter, Tracy, became an apprentice jockey and son, William, relocated to Sydney to work as a trackrider and then travelling to the UK. While i got back into shape and starting riding track work and training for trainers such as Mr Adam Palmer, Health Coote etc I recently re-obtained my trainers license. I pride myself on my professional abilities to handle the Horses in a humane and gentle way so that it is a positive experience for the Horse and the Owner. |

Michael Hayes was a favourite of mine when I first got interested in Racing. He rode for the Armstrong stable, but was tragically killed in a car crash.

Interesting that in the text on that page, it says that it was a Jockey Club rule that if an apprentice takes a ride outside the British isles, or a ride over jumps, that he has to immediately relinquish his apprentice licence, and take out a full jockey's licence. It affected Kipper Lynch the previous year because he took a ride at Ostend while still an apprentice. Is that still the case?
|
|
By:
Kipper Lynch played the violin...............
|
|
By:
thanks for that ged , onlooker , i know there was a shared app title around that time ..got it wrong as usual ....nice piece on r dicey as well ged....

Re the Armstrong Academy - interesting how it worked on a "sire of sires" basis. "Tom" Jones who was assistant to Armstrong was also a great maker of jocks - Greville Starkey for example.

By:
Used to know Robert Edmondson when he was Champion Appentice.
I think weight problems where the reason he didn't progress. |
|
By:
I served my time with Robert Armstong,he had a few Decent Apprentices,Mick Miller and Bryn Crossley were probably the best.
|
|
By:
Mention of Robert Edmondson immediately makes me think of Owenbolinska, wrong spelling maybe. Cole had a great record bringing on apprentices, Robert Edmonson, David Dinely, Mark malham and Richard Quinn all spring to mind.
Anybody know what happened to another jockey destined for the top named Richard Sidebottom who rode for Denys Smith? |
|
By:
Compton Rodriguez

Paul Coles last winner.
Kithairon posts on here sometimes. He must be getting on a bit now.. |
|
By:
Great memories of Owenboliska flyingbolt, he must have won umpteen races.
Rodriguez rode for Hobbs and I think it was Robert Sidebottom, not Richard. |
|
By:
Did Kevin Leason not ride Kithairon G2D?
|
|
By:
Do you mean Kevin who became Karen ?
|
|
By:
Yes mate, Kevin at the time. Used to love Ken Payne`s regular raiders at Hamilton.
|
|
By:
Robert Sidebottom is now a Stipendiaty Steward.
|
|
By:
Aye think he did, although i think John Currant was up when he won at 33s...
|
|
By:
Stipendiary-even.

By:
Anyone remember Keith Temple-Nidd
|
|
By:
He rode for Gavin Hunter i believe.
Must be nearly 80 now if hopefully he is still with us.. |
|
By:
Yes, he would be 78 now (10 years on me)but I haven't a clue whether he is still with us. Good bit of a read....

Hey Guinness, trust you! Think Keith T-N rode in a classic!! Placed in one too, I think, always fascinated by his name as a kid, so probably early sixties. Has any double-barreled jockey ever been placed in a classic?

Hey acey do you remember Paul Tulk ? doesn't seem to get mentioned on ere much (if ever)
He used to ride for Roberts dad.. |
