A solid staking plan and getting a better price than the selections true chance.

Anything else is a distraction. No need to complicate.

1. only to lay horses to lose and not back to win
Mathematically speaking, it's the same thing.

2. set yourself a daily/weekly and monthly target based on what you need to make to live
Nonsensical.  you have no 'control' over forthcoming results, so the concept of a notional 'target' is absurd.  This is a trick of the human brain trying to apply order to a chaotic situation.

3. if you can have a trial period before you start for "real money" - i practiced for 3mths to see if I could actually make it pay to the levels i needed - gives you chance to find out what works for you and what doesn't
An excellent idea.

4. discipline - don't ever ever ever chase a daily position - take a loss if it's not happening and move on tomorrow - it's hard to recover mentally if you do your brains in cos you chased.
Correct - never chase, bet because you are convinced you have an edge. The 'daily position' thing is irrelevant
.
5. don't listen to tips/advice - only play what you want and don't involve anyone else.
Excellent advice.

6. don't ever play bigger than your league - when you press the bet/lay button you'll know through the feel in your gut if your playing too big.
True, but the dangers of betting too small are plausible too.  A small bet can be regarded as 'throw-away' or 'not serious' money, meaning one can cut corners in terms of study.  They all add up.

7. when you get to your daily target in £ terms call it a day - don't carry on trading.
Ludicrous.  You've reached your made-up 'target', so you ignore the golden betting opportunity later in the day?  Completely irrational.

8. be lucky!
Amen to that!

again lads thanks for the feedback, he will probably paper trade on here for a trial period so everyone will see the things he has taken from this post,
my view is this

for anyone on here to make a decent profit they would have to put in more than 40 hours a week
also take in to account the comisssion, pc charge and the unsocial/unhealthy  side of sitting at the pc all day with your blood pressure going up and down all day there has to be easy ways to make a living but if you are doing it at the moment and making a living not having to spend 40 hours on here well I can only say one thing to you.

you lucky fooker.
By:

I certainly spend 40 hours a week but my blood pressure is rarely affected. If it is you are doing the wrong thing. I don't sit at my pc all day because I have selected races I work on and they are not available every day or in any huge quantity. Spread your efforts over too many races and you dilute the likely end result.

I see you are here since 01 so I can assume (leave out all the ass u me  jokes) you have a certain knowledge that a newbie coming on here would not have, no doubt you were on here at lot more when you started in 01 but I stick to my point which is a newbie trying to make a living on here would have to spend many hours on here until he learned by his mistakes. you have most likely taught yourself which races to back in after 11 years on here. It would be almost like an apprenticeship to come on here to try make a living.

V as in everything there is no substitute for experience but I am sure you will find the harder you work the luckier you get. I have already said how I work and my experience certainly makes life easier but be sure all of the clues are there. Why not rule the job not let the job rule you?

Set out how many hours you are prepared to work. Add to that any holidays you want to take. From that you can list the days and time available. Get the racing calendar and select the races that fit into that schedule taking into consideration a)degree of difficulty b)proximity to restrict chasing losses and c)how they fit in with the funds you have available and the rewards you require.

Solve that and you are almost there.

I think I burnt myself out on horse racing after backing for over 50 years so I don't study form anymore and just lay(mostly) according to instinct/experience. It's just for fun interest these days but I surprise myself by making money. So it can definitely be done particularly if you add the work on top. The things I have working for me are experience, discipline and not having strong views! You'll never hear me saying must win, must lose.

The truth lies in past results, take a very hard luck at as many previous races as you wish to,you need only look at all races since January 1st 2012,ask yourself>how many of those winners would I have backed and how many of those losers would I have layed?
Results for this year alone will prove to you how difficult it all is,the majority of people having a serious go to make a living backing and laying horses this year will not be making a living but slowly destroying their funds
There have been many major upsets this year just like all other years and the more a person uses their years of knowledge the higher the chances are of them losing lots of money, believe it or not you have a far greater chance of earning money on the horses by not studying but applying the lucky dip method
If you are not being supplied good information about your selections you are playing with fire and will soon lose lots of money
The majority of trainers dont know if their horses will win or not, even a horse that a trainer has nearly given up on will often run a blinder and win
Football straight out win bets are far easier and you always have at least a 50/50 chance of winning
Good luck if you give it a go>paper trading will tell you nothing due to the fact that it is a different ball game (excuse the pun)when the chips are down

When anyone talks about targets for days/weeks or months you know straight away they haven't got a clue and are starting out immediately from the wrong premise. Most successful pro's tend to have come there via a gradual process of betting profits overtaking regular job profits and as such they wind down the day job or simply pack it in. If you set off leaving one for the other with this nonsensical targets for a week objective you will almost certainly come a cropper even if your methods are reasonably sound

Just my little advice. If you've got the discipline, and it has taken me years to get there,I only bet on the bigger days/meetings. Better quality racing and some serious horses at good prices.

Yes, others will come on here and say a 10/1 shot at Newton Abbott on a Wednesday is the same as a 10/1 winner of the Gold Cup but I've the added confidence that the 10/1 in the Gold Cup will give me a run for my money. I just can't trust the day to day mundane stuff although some find it a challenge to second guess some of the more 'enterprising' stables.

For example, since Cheltenham, I've had both the Grand National meeting, Aintree & Fairyhouse/Punchestown/Newmarket Guineas Meeting/Chester Cup Meeting/York Dante/Derby meeting and currently Royal Ascot. That's enough for me to be getting involved with.

For the remainder of the summer I've got the July Meeting/Galway/Goodwood/York before the Leger meeting heralds the start of Autumn.

Anyone else do something similar?

Brigust 1 how do you deal with the more enterprising stables regards form etc or do you try to avoid them...?
By:
ilikewavingatbuses
When: 20 Jun 12 18:09
i think the difference in making it pay or not can often be in the decisions u make. as in knowing when to bet big or bet small. if u backed or laid a certain amount of times on a larger than your normal bet and they hit, then happy days. obv its knowing when to have these bets and then u can continue with smaller bets keeping your bank ticking over.

not easy obv and will undoubtedly have to be lucky!

I'm a lot like jumper if you read my earlier threads. I go on form and not guesswork. If I have a good bet in a race and I'm so confident I cannot lose then I know I've got it right, even if the unexpected happens. If I have a bet and start feeling edgy about it I know Ive got it wrong and bail out even if the result is what I wanted.
By 'enterprising' do you mean gambling? The 'enterprising' stables generally run their horses in handicaps. I never bet in handicaps. Hope that answers your question.

As I said. Select the type of race you feel confident about finding the winner of in the majority of cases. By 'winner' I mean a successful win or lay bet. When you have selected the races you want to work with you can then lay out your whole week accordingly. Specialise, that's what I do. Stay with it and learn from it.

I do my own calculations and keep everything that may help, stable tours etc. With only a limited number of races per week certainly makes it easier and now we have race replays etc. Priceless. I know exactly what races are coming up and what is entered, even if it doesn't run. There is a hell of a lot of dross nowadays and few evening meetings fit the bill. Some do but most don't. Similarly some racecourses are minefields so I swerve them. May sound a little complicated but, believe me, it is simple. Anyone could do the same with the same results.

Found the caps lock did we Fen? As you've been in the game 32 years, both sides of the counter and nearly as much as me, why don't you offer some advice based on your experience? Doesn't cost anything and may help someone. I wouldn't advise anyone to listen to anyone just decide on a strategy and stick to it. Put together all of the things you know you should do, like research and avoid all of the things you know you shouldn't do like, chase. No strategy equals chaos imo.

Fen, why don't you read my posts. I simply pointed out roughly what I do, not specifically, and it works for me. Why would I tell someone looking for advice to p i ss off, that may be your way but it isn't mine. If anything I have said in this thread is bo ll oxs read through my threads and point it out to me. If anything I said is claiming anything then point it out to me. Someone asked a question and I gave my answer. No-one has to take advice that is up to them.

And the 'listen' thing only applies if you know who you are listening to or they have a track record you respect. That's blindingly obvious. If Gosden comes on says something I listen. If Gay Kellaway comes on and says something I don't. Simple as that. Whether I take that advice is up to me.

If you can help somebody as you pass along your passing will not be in vain. Costs you eff all Fen you miserable git.

I have to say that, imo, the posts of brigust 1 on this thread have been very good.
Clear and concise.

Fen is often good with advice, but I feel he's going a bit off-course by getting the hump with other posters.

Anyway, thanks to all contributors for the thread.

My own take, for what it's worth, is
pick your races carefully
and
IF, you can get it,
note "good" inside information.

To my knowledge, there is NO regular, efficient way to do this, but
when it's right it is imperative to have enough on.
My own results are very hit and miss. I'm down a bit at present, but expect to get back up.
Profits for me are never much more than 7% p.a. at best, so I expect the losing runs and bad patches.

All the very best to all!

This just gets better and better, the proof is in past results,if you look at Ascot this week>Top standard of racing with very few results that many would win on>Are you winners telling us that you only backed Frankel and So You Think this week
The majority of gamblers that spent many hours studying and then placed their bets for Ascot this week have now lost plenty of money
Football betting only involves 2 runners and you have a far greater chance of winning
