the only way to win is to buy a system from ebay, they'll all return a profit, you just need to choose one that suits you. There are ones that involve less than an hours work a day and others require full time involvement but return a better profit. They do require an upfront investment but the rewards are amazing

I agree with Stake & Chips but disagree with Slicer

Discipline is the key (For me).

Only bet on what you know - and only bet if it's boring.

If you're bored it's work. Which it should be.

And watch the pace market. Most telling thing on Betfair.

If that fails marry someone called Winston and become a layer of short priced favourites.

It can and is being done , you need lots of discipline and then treat it as work, if you put enough time and effort in (12 to 15 hrs a day should be enough) and then add some more discipline, which will mean not having a bet some days, its like anything else in life to be good at something you have to work hard at it and study/practise and as mentioned above don't get out of your league,...your league is dictated by your bankroll, you have to be able to sustain losing runs as no matter how good you are horses are not machines, its not an exact science so losing runs are inevitable and you have to be able to see them out without the pressure of paying the bills.
Therefore to be able to do it as a full time income earner you need to have a reasonable bank to start with, and that is a major stumbling block as is having the time to study if you have other work commitments..

I think you have to use the place betting market as a saver bet

I use this approach: 1 pt win bet, 2 pt place bet

if the minimum odds I take for a place bet are 1.5, if I do a $50 win / $100 place, as long as the horse runs a place, I don't lose, this way you don't need as many winners but obviously you need the horse to run well, I don't bet unless i'm supremely confident it will run a place at the very least

I make a good ammount of money Cool

By:

When: 18 Jun 12 23:18
but I also use a reverse of that as in 100w 50 place just to recover stakes, its all about the price of your selection though and your confidence level in it...

Let me explain something about betting which will explain that all these tipping firms and most punters have an extremely difficult task in front of them, not because we get bad days which you do, not because we cant pick good runners which we can, but because of, and in spite of the MARKET.

When a horse is fancied to win it stands a risk of shortening in the market and at worst becoming the clear favorite which then puts it in the dead zone for trying to profit from because
on average you will return less money then you will invest and bookmakers have made empires this way.

Now if you can rate horses reasonably well or you want to use the BHA, RP or any other ratings available you will find that the higher a horse is rated the smaller price on average it will become so its a constant game of cat and mouse finding good horses at good prices and the MARKET compounds this problem by being over-dynamic in that a price can change now in an instant and was was good value one minute becomes useless ten minutes later and trying to estimate what a price will be on event start is just as difficult to forecast as the chances of all the runners.

So when a say tipster says this horse is worth backing he/she does so without trully knowing if this will be a profitable venture as anything can happen before the race and the constant shifting in prices will destroy and create many profits in a matter of minutes on an exchange or on a bookmakers monitor.

When a horse suddenly gets backed down to half its price it doesn't mean you are going to be quids in , it means all the value has disappeared from that selection on an average basis unless you were lucky enough to get matched or take a better price much earlier.

Ok so if your with me this far then you must be asking your self "what point is this guy making"

Well the above problem means that I find it incredibly difficult to offer profitable advices when I cant accurately predict prices and Time-form seems to be much more "off the mark" than the racing post whom have a foot in the door, so to speak as they supply all the shops around the land with the price guides and thus have great influence on the bookmakers and punters decision
making process's in terms of powering markets.

The best I can do is use timeform price guides to find runners with prices expected between 8.6 and 16 BSP using my ratings which return 135-140 ROI% on average, but this isn't the beat approach as what you would really do in a professional betting environment using an exchange is use an auto-betting program or make your own using API calls and checking the price before you clear a betting event otherwise you are wasting your money and investment.

I'm with TRD.Racing. You have to take the opportunities when they arise. Equally, if you don't see anything good, don't bet. Sure you have to keep tight control, but that doesn't mean missing out on a good bet just because you've already had a good win.
Say for example you spot three really good bets on Monday, one on Tuesday, and the rest of the week is utter crap. Your first bet on Monday wins. Are you not going to bet the other two? And then are you going to maker bets on Wednesday onwards when there is nothing good? Surely not. Make your four bets, level stakes, and take the rest of the week off.

1. only to lay horses to lose and not back to win
2. set yourself a daily/weekly and monthly target based on what you need to make to live.
3. if you can have a trial period before you start for "real money" - i practiced for 3mths to see if I could actually make it pay to the levels i needed - gives you chance to find out what works for you and what doesn't
4. discipline - don't ever ever ever chase a daily position - take a loss if it's not happening and move on tomorrow - it's hard to recover mentally if you do your brains in cos you chased.
5. don't listen to tips/advice - only play what you want and don't involve anyone else.
6. don't ever play bigger than your league - when you press the bet/lay button you'll know through the feel in your gut if your playing too big.
7. when you get to your daily target in £ terms call it a day - don't carry on trading.
8. be lucky!

The rules I follow:

Select the type of races you want to specialise in, for example Group races. You will not be able to cover everything so trying to will dilute your efforts. This will allow you plenty of time off and also plenty of time to do research. I never bet in handicaps for example.

Do not, repeat not, set a target to reach. You may reach your target early in the day or week then even better bets will be missed. Just take it one race at a time and set a limit you will stake irrespective of price. I hardly ever bet more than 200 to win or 200 to lose on a lay. A few times a year I will bet 1k on what I consider certainties. You will find that consistently winning smallish on a daily basis sets you in a strong frame of mind.

I give myself a 50 a week pocket money for those personal fancies I have followed but never, ever exceed it each week. That is where discipline is important. If you were working and lost your pocket money you would have to wait until next pay-day.

Use every tool available including win, place and lay. Do not speculate or do multiples except with pocket money.

Keep daily records. I have for over 4 years now. Makes you feel good.

Meltdown is the biggest problem
You could be doing well with a good sized bank (I have) and then just when you think you have cracked it you could hit a bad run and lose lose lose, unless you are a very calm person that does not flinch at heavy losses you will go into meltdown mode and lose more by chasing
I am calm cool and collected and can afford a good size bank (£4000),I went into meltdown mode and lost heavily,I screamed at my cat and myself and everything and everyone
Meltdown is the biggest problem
I got lucky and won it back yet I could have lost more

I tried going full time just after my degree. I did not have a big enough bank nor did I have the discipline. I think you need a mental toughness that I certainly do not posess. You also need to be quite selfish with your time depending on what sports you are betting on. Do yopu want to spend 12 hours a day in front of a computer and a tv. I initially thought I could find 1 bad short price horse each day and most times I could but on occassions when I lost I then could not walk away. I still gamble (badly) because I enjoy it but I don't live under the illusion that I will ever make money from it.

As for tips on how to do it (why would you take notice though?) Avoid backing short prices and laying big prices. Find your own angle in, a few years ago Pricewise was a big help but now it's too much trouble, maybe have a list of horses that you follow and only bet on when conditions are in their favour. Try pricing up events (can you work out a tissue?)it maybe is not as  relevant as it once was but it is useful even if you do not bet.

I believe that it can be done but you need to be honest with yourself. Are you a gambler? If you are then it will be harder than if you show no emotion win or lose.

While all are watching Ascot today have a look at Thirsk and particularly Tim Easterby runners.
There are quite a few very helpful members on here and it is worth reading their posts especially on Horse Antepost.

Good Luck and keep us informed.

You cannot substitute experience Steamship. I've done all of the 'silly' things but I told myself I must learn from that.
I remember my first day as a 'pro'. A friend and I were convinced we could make if set off on the first day of the flat when you paid tax on your bets. We drove all round the country and kept going for about 5 months. Great experience but we lost our bank.

With that behind me I know the pitfalls. I served the apprenticeship now I mean to cash in on it. Now I stick to certain races I can have days off and go on holidays. I do have losing days but they only average about 3 a month.

Thirsk has 6 handicaps, a seller and a novice stakes. Stay away it's a bookies benefit I wouldn't even look at it.

Some interesting comments on here, just briefly a few thoughts:-

1) If your laying you don't need a huge bank,
but you do need to turn that money over a lot.

2) You need to do your homework before you commit.

3)Rigorously stick to a game plan, and don't waver from the rules
that govern your betting.

4) TRD.Racing 18 Jun 12 14:56

"The stopping when you reach a daily target idea is nonsense imo "

Wouldn't agree with that, you can't hit a target if you haven't got a target.

It doesn't have to be a daily target it could be a weekly target,
say, 2 points a week and Stop.

It's a risky business and all you can do as far as possible
is to eliminate the major risk. That is why I like setting a target.
How many hours a day do you want to spend on here
sat down in front of a 17" computer screen.

Just a few of my thoughts, people see things differently.

i agree telldel. daily targets works for me. the argument i have against the statement personally is that i can find good bets on a daily basis, so missing a couple i fancied doesn't matter much. so in that case having a daily target works for me or i'd just be on here all day and i have too many interests for that.

^ another thing about setting a target, discipline is important,
and setting a target helps to install some discipline.

But, as I said, people see things differently.

Sorry Steam, been out.

At the start of the week I list all the races I may bet in. That way I can do research and plan time off etc.

I bet the same every race and I haven't changed it for nearly 2 years. Putting on too little can become 'throw away money' and putting on too much can be restrictive.

I never lay newcomers, I never lay when the opposition is first time out etc. I need to be able to judge from all of the information available. I don't mind backing or laying 2 or 3 in a race it is all about returns.

I never bet in handicaps or races lower than Class 4.

I do some work on here and some with bookies early prices etc. Don't get it right all of the time by any means. I never lay until just before the off to allow for swings and non runners.
I keep daily records and that gives me strength. I cannot chase because I already know when my next race is and it may not be for a couple of days.

It is fairly easy and with a set, solid plan to follow it works.
