What you are up against is punters being able to watch EVERY RACE from the comfort of their own home, concessions, like best odds, money back etc. etc.Oh,and cheaper food and drink!
That is not bookie bashing,as many are quick to say, that is how it is.Things have moved on at a great pace in the betting world, not to mention apps. i-pads etc.,that can be used on course.
   I deliberately didn't include exchanges.

Going good for me too, and if mijhaar wins today, be a whole lot better.
There's nothing as bad as reading a thread of whinging bookies, complaining
about the lack of mugs that didn't turn up the day before. If it's not for you
do something else.

Has the collapse of the betting ring that has been the case in the South for the past few years finally spread to the "vibrant North" Adge? I seem to remember not that long ago you and your colleagues reporting that turnover was very good and perfectly happy with the business......a year can be a long time in bookmaking I guess!

On course bookies have become victims of their own greed, for years they have been arbing the prices on here for no risk profit. They took all the mug money and expected people not to get wise, the main problem they've got now is on course access to the exchanges, apps etc people DO catch on even the mugs eventually. As one bloke said to me whilst placing a bet on his smart phone at Aintree last month"if you cant beat em .....".

The longevity of Racecourse Bookmakers will with out doubt be governed by the take-up of smart phones which have reduced in priced significantly in the last few years and how hard the bookies drive the smart apps that go alongside.

At Cheltenham this year William Hill were giving away a scarf if you scanned the app on the scarf which then automatically downloaded to your phone (clever marketing).

The festivals will always be ok hopefully not because of the number of people in the main but because the mobile signal is usually jammed due to demandExcited but even this is improving....   The Racecourses also have a role to play by making it a viable day out for most people cost wise to go racing, thus at least increasing the audience the bookies are playing to......

All business that have ceased to trade in the past have done so because they have fialed to adapt, spot trends, allowed their competititors to do what they do better than them.

Innovation is needed although difficult, it will take a little more than a free sweet with every bet or a prize draw, but I guess everything has to start somewhereGrin

Oncourse market has 2 types of punter that it can still generate business from:

1) high Rollers - who cant get on with the shops.

2) Casual "tourist" punters who arent too bothered if the price is 12-1 or 11-1.

On course market cannot compete with off course who offer : Early prices , sometimes overbroke, best odds guaranteed, payout on double result, enhanced place terms (1/4 odds sometimes 1/3 odds, money back specials if 2nd, free bets if back a winner over 4-1 etc etc

The on course will never be able to adapt to that unless portbale FOBT's are attached to every pitch to subsidise the business.

However, if the enviroment were to change with say a reintroduction of off course betting tax, then that would make for a very different situation - Can see George OSbourne putting 1% on betting in next couple of years, maybe?
By:

When: 17 May 12 13:33
Davy - Not sure I agree with 1) unless they like to deal purely in cash

The introduction of the 1% tax could only be a good thing but then how many punters left in shops these days would suddenyly migrate to the Racecourse as a result of a 1% tax (very little I would argue).  So all you are left with is 2) whom racecourse's in the main seem to want to do everything they can to discourage people from joining that category
By:

When: 17 May 12 13:37
RR - Yes 1% probably not enough but 10% betting tax across the board off course (Including betfair), now that would certainly help attract the punters who like to have a few hundred on.

lightbulbs ,
sorry to take so long with your question [ been at york ]
business during the week is well down this year...due partly to the recession and the fact that MORE bookmakers are setting up...plus that many are taking on or matching exchanges which with higher expenses added is suicide in the long run.

todays results will have straightened a few up.

one note of cheer
your friendly bookmaker jack wilson giving a very generous 1/6th odds to each way punters in the first 16 runner handicap laid £100 each way judge and jury at 12/1.

he had £95 win back on here at 13.5 but stands the places. wwas cheered home loudly by every bookmaker arround him.

BUSINESS appeared to be slightly up on wednesday but results were horrible.the rails were busy, the front 9 not bad,the grass picked up(4 books instead of 11)and the rest preying for a miracle which never arrived.

Adge - did the punter not deck him when he went to collect and only received 2/1 for the place?
By:

When: 17 May 12 19:51
smith and fox [ mick ] certainly informed him of the fact and everyone else within 20 yards and also gave mr wilson quite a coating more than once during the afternoon. btw he also offered 1/6th odds in the last [ a 17 runner handicap ]

Its bringing us all into disrepute adge.  We will all get tarred with the same brush and it's in peoples' nature to remember their bad experiences over their good ones.  It will turn people away from coming racing.

I can't believe the GC can't apply their 'fair and open' and 'protection of the vulnerable' to get this practice stopped.  They gave us an opportunity to set the terms ourselves responsibly but unfortunately some see fit to take advantage of the situation for their own short term gains.  Shame on them.

Loved the 'had £95 back on here at 13.5' btw.  Made me laugh out loud, what a bookmaker!

Why not print out a few simple leaflets explaining the racket and get someone to hand them out in front of his joint prior to people betting. Once they collect and realise what is taking place it is too late and the damage is one to the rest of the ring.

Make sure the person used is not another pitch holder or employee so that the worst the racecourse can do is chuck him out.

Maybe if he realised that his practices will be disrupted he will listen.

hi guys ribero here, business better than yesterday but results not.wasnot, level after 2 days? if only, well done for keeping away, always very enjoyable watching the jollies ping in when you are sat at home when you have decided to give it a swerve, you must have enjoyed it nearly as much as regit who i believe had a bird eyes view of his mentor getting slaughtered and getting paid for it too!

Ribero - funnily enough I don't enjoy watching the jollies flying in when I'm at home, never have done.  I did enjoy the cricket though on a bonus day off.  If I had gone today my estimate is that I would have lost what I won on Wednesday.  I don't stand them like you.
