Tomorrow’s 17.20 at Newmarket look’s a really good opportunity for Moon Trip to register career win No.3, and Imo looks set to resume an upward curve after a poor ride Lto.
Whether you love him or loathe him, there’s no getting away from the half decent form the Mark Johnston yard are in, admittedly a good few are not firing, but in the grand scheme of things he’s in a rich vein of form. He’s not a trainer I’m personally tripping over to bet on as a rule, but there is no doubt he seems to get plenty of progression out of his 3yrolds about this time of the year, with Moon trip being an apt inclusion within that very bracket. Moon Trip made his seasonal reappearance over Pontefract’s 12F, with connections quickly stepping him markedly up in trip from his previous campaign, and was running a nice sort of race until a combination of the going and lack of fitness conspired against him turning in, looking like he would benefit for the run. Along with some help from the assessor he was also given plenty of time to come on for that run before heading to Musselburgh, where he ran an absolute screamer trying to grind it out at the head of affairs, only being worn down very late in the day. He then went to Salisbury at the back end of June, again over 12F, and ran a little disappointing if truth be known. However hindsight is a wonderful thing, and now looking back that run may have been better than first assumed, with 3nto winners coming from the race(including Moon Trip), and the winner looking to be unlucky in running against Sir Graham Wade recently at Goodwood. After his (disappointing) run at Salisbury he was upped a further 4F in trip, and on decent ground at Beverly looked in control of his race from start to finish, and from a punting perspective there was never a seconds doubt to the outcome, readily galloping clear at the finish, looking very much to appreciate the extra yardage. It was fairly baffling to see connections drop him down in trip for his next race, and the ride form M Barzalona was even more baffling. Having give the winner a very easy lead, tried to ride a 13F contest in the last half mile, not such a good thing to do on a horse that appears to have decent stamina reserves. Tomorrow Mark Johnston has booked the highly talented Darren Eagan, whose claim takes him back down to his facile Beverly winning mark, and is 2 from 3 for the stable to date. Having gone through the other runner’s I’ve deduced nothing is likely to make anywhere near the progress this fellow is potentially going to make, and stepping back up to 2miles on a decent surface will see him in a much better light. |

Bet day 225. 2 pts win Kaylena 16.30 Folkestone 4-1 PP BOG…..
…….On another fairly un-remarkable Sunday’s racing in Britain I thought I’d possibly be keeping the powder dry for a better opportunity through the week, however after double checking the cards and watching some videos footage I’ve decided to get involved in possibly the most intriguing race on Folkestone’s card, the 16.30. As stated this looks an intriguing little heat, with Peachez stepping back up in trip with a top jockey up, Hilfiger coming back to the flat appearing on a very interesting mark on his British debut in this sphere, as does Scotsbrook Cloud after his also ran position in the Queen Alexandra at Royal Ascot around some highly rated animals, combined with some recent form over hurdles. However the one I think will give these and the rest of the field most to do is Jeremy Noseda’s unexposed filly Kaylena, who is propping up this handicap off her paltry 61 mark. Having been pitched into a couple of fairly hot maidens as a 2yrold looked in need of the experience, not making much appeal as far as the note book was concerned in each of those contests. She made her seasonal debut back in May over a mile, again nothing out of the ordinary, keeping on without really threatening to get involved. Her latest start was her handicap debut off 63, and was stepped up to 10F over Newmarket’s grand expanse, and gave a small indication that staying may just be her niche. That day in the closing stages in experience was again in evidence, but once Royston French got her balanced and organised she looked to come home very strongly, albeit well away from the procession that Lady Cakes had turned the event into. She now steps up further in trip to 12F, and strictly on the book Imo should hold Peachez on their previous run, as Kaylena was gaining on this rival approaching the line Lto, and is now technically 6lb better off (Peachez claimer ridden then) for less than a length. Jeremy Noseda has also booked Jamie Spencer, who only goes there for a couple of rides, and Folkestone seems to be a venue seldom associated with both jockey and trainer over the years, that could be a tip in it’s self. I’m certain there is plenty more to come in natural progression with this filly, and Imo stepping up in trip can only add to her cause, with the booking of Spencer the cherry on the cake to her chance. At the time of writing a couple have been withdrawn(notably Hilfiger), so instead of my 1 pt E.W. bet to nothing at around 11-2, I’m just having it all on the nose at the advised price above. |

Bet day 229. 2pts E.W. Golden Tempest 15.15 Newmarket 6-1 generally (B365 4-1+ feature race)....
Having looked in need of a change of luck with this thread for some time now, I’m pinning my hopes on Lucky number “7” in today’s 15.15 at Newmarket, that horse being Golden Tempest… No “7”, drawn “7”, “7” day’s since last run and rated “77”. The way my luck is at the minute it will probably finish”7th”, but here are a few reasons why I believe it to have an outstanding chance of winning…. …..Eve Johnson Houghton has had a few of her stable stalwarts starting to show a bit more lately than previously this season, with the likes of Yurituni and Amistress hitting the frame recently, along with a good few others running very well that had previously shown not too much else. Golden Tempest is also an inclusion into that realm, and does seem to reserve her best for this time of the year. She has been fairly consistent to date around late summer time, and looks very fairly treated off today’s mark of 77, especially considering the way she finished off her race a week ago off the same mark(the winner given a very good tactical ride considering the gallop looked no more than average)over Sandowns 7F. She's due to go up 3lb on Monday, and could be very well in today given the fact her stable are running into form, as she is herself. Although she has not won on turf she has ran some sound races, and looks to have had her usual type of campaign as per last season, and to me she makes more appeal to everything else in the field, and on a line through Mr David she theoretically has a decent chance of finishing in front of Zacyanthus the 3-1 market leader |

Bet day 231 1pt E.W. Fast Shot 14.40 Ripon, 1pt E.W. Grissom 15.30 Ripon + 1/2pt E.W. Double with B365 16-1 & 25-1(28's Joe) respectively BOG…..
…… Again there seems to be a bumper selection of racing throughout the country this afternoon and this evening, and there were a fair few I liked the look of within plenty of those cards, but have settled on the feature race and it’s consolation at Ripon for both of today’s selections. Having gone through both races I narrowed it down to a few in each, but that few could quite easily have been over half on cross referencing some old/recent form lines, and have been swung towards both of the Easterby contenders for 3 reasons, the price, the draw, and also because of the track ( 2nd only to York where Tim Easterby likes to have a winner). I will start with Fast Shot in the consolation event, and will have his work cut out with more than a couple in this line up, notably the well backed Prodigality who actually topped my short list having liked him Lto, but I wouldn’t get involved at 7’s last night so 5-1 on offer this morning is most definitely out of the question. Fast Shot looked to still be in form Lto when tucked in behind runners up the stands rail, and although beaten fair and square was still finding all the way to the line. I firmly believe that David Allan will head over to the far rail today with a select few others, which will suit mounts style of racing much better Imo, and should have potentially much more space to have an un-interrupted run once going. The handicapper is beginning to relent a little, and in a wide open affair could have his say, and although he handles fast ground ok any heavy showers would be appreciably welcome to his chances. Now onto his stable mate Grissom in the big one, and if my theory is correct regarding the place to be the lower stalled horses may come in for a little support, and the 25-1 on offer presently for this horse could look massive come post time (28’s Coral). He is another one who will benefit from a frantic early pace, as he usually sees his races out very strongly, and another who looked to be still in form Lto. That run was the Stewards Cup at Goodwood, and was severely hampered at a very crucial stage of the race, with Mikael Barzalona still yet to ask him for his final effort, yet still stayed on fairly eye catchingly under a hand ride once his chance was gone. Just like his stable mate Grissom has some bits of form on a decent surface, but no doubt connections would love to see the heavens open this morning to enhance his chance. He is another one the assessor has given some respite to, and looks like he will get plenty of toe into the race on the far side with the Bosun Breeze likely to take them along at a decent gallop. Within this field plenty have decent chances, but also within are plenty of dubious true 6F performers, whom will need very good rides to see things out at the fast pace this event is usually contested, along with picking their passage, the theory again being Grissom should not have this problem being in hopefully the minority group. |

Twizzle...If your going to follow anyone (Robster27, Hugh Taylor, whoever) for a consistent length of time, Apart from any abilities or inabilities to obtain prices, you have to stick to a staking plan per point imo as its 1.01 that if you vary staking in any way at all, you will put more on the selections that will inevitably turn out to be losers...
Fwiw, I followed him towards the end of last year, and made a concerted effort by hook or crook to follow at advised £20 per point this year...Must say, 1st 2 days of the year were absolutely phenomonal...80+ points up iirc... I agree with the above few posts. Losing runs are part and parcel of this game. And serious punters know its long term profits that count.
Hopefully I won't get labelled cantankerous, if I point out that Rob is 'only' 67 pts up as he starts each year with 100 pts. That is still an excellent return for a part time punter. |

Just back off me jollies, and looks like I've avoided a bit of grief / debate regarding me thread..... twizzle I'm as sick as anyone regarding my current selections / form, and I also appreciate the fact folk do follow threads such as this one etc... I'm not trying to put anyone away, as anyone that has joined in this year and last probably has already sussed, but if it weren’t for bad luck I’d have no luck at all presently. Thought your initial post was a little out of order, but I do accept alcohol can have an aggravated effect on peoples mood, and sometimes they say (post) things in the heat of the moment they can later regret, so I have no problem accepting your apology which you were big enough to give in the cold light of the following day.
I will continue to post my selections / analysis, as and when I find a one, and like a few of the latter posters have stated any punting is about the long run. Anyone that does happen to join in with any future gambles, or whoever you may choose to follow please be sensible with your staking plans. |

Having given today’s cards the once over, I am of the opinion that apart from the opening couple of maidens on the Goodwood card, for me the 16.40 is one, if not the most intriguing race of the day.
The race is certain to revolve around the two 3yrolds as the betting would suggest, and look to deserve their respective places at the head of the market. Both Gassin Golf and Ruacana look like fairly progressive individuals, and both should be suited with the step up to 2miles, but at their respective current odds It’s most definitely worth taking them on with a bigger priced one, and I believe at his double figured price O Ma Lad could just about be the value in the contest despite running 2lb wrong at the weights. After running fairly consistently throughout the season his latest couple of runs suggest he is coming back to his boiling point, with his previous run being the strongest endorsement for this claim. That race was fairly well contested class 3 event over Newbury’s 13F, which also had few nicely progressive 3yrolds within the field. The gallop initially looked only ordinary, but the few at the head of proceedings injected the pace into the race around the top bend about 7F from home, catching a fair few flat footed, with plenty of jockeys looking to get after their horses quickly after entering the straight. However that was not the case for O Ma Lad under a typical patient Richard Hughes ride, with the horse still travelling with a degree of purpose just off the pace with half a mile to run. That however was short lived, and passing the 3 pole looked like he would be beaten out of sight, but too his credit this horse really knuckled down for Richard Hughes, and if truth be known with an un interrupted run would have made the finish much more interesting, and was rattling home under a hand ride when running out of real estate. Like the previously mentioned pair O Ma Lad looks like he will be suited to stepping up in trip, and looks well worth another try over this distance. The ground and track should also suit, and the fact that James Doyle is taking back over in the saddle is also worth another tick in the box. |

Tomorrow’s racing at Doncaster look’s as good as the previous 2 day’s, and no doubt the question from a punting point of view will be whether the soft in the ground dries up, or will the f/cast showers in the Doncaster area materialise late morning/early afternoon to consolidate the going to be on the softer side of good. That was the question I posed myself with, and have talked myself out of a couple of E.W. bets in the 13.50 Nanton (then14’s) & Old Hundred (still 14’s)on that pretence, both looking to love Doncaster’s 15F, both looking to need a decent fast surface to perform on.
Instead I edged my bets so to speak with Times Up, whom also has the ability to act around Doncaster when taking the November handicap over the course in 2010 (G/soft), and has also shown his versatility for top of the ground. I’m very much of the opinion tomorrow will ride on the softer side of good, g/soft, and this horse has had 4 lifetime starts in that described going, one in each of his last 4 campaigns yielding form figures of 1-1-2-1, the runner up spot when beaten a s/head in a G2 in France last season. John Dunlop knows the family of this horse extremely well, and the vast majority improve with racing and age, and are always given plenty of time to mature, Times Up being no exception to that rule. He once again looks like he has been brought to the boil at the concluding end of the season, and seems to excel with his form around this time of year. He renews rivalry with a couple whom he beat fair and square Lto at York over 16F, and looked to have plenty of running left in him when passing the post by a comfortable margin from High Jinx, with the extra 2F tomorrow looking well within his compass. I’m fairly certain Saddlers Rock will take them along at a decent gallop again, but if it did turn out to be a tactical affair at least Times Up has the necessary toe to be able to quicken if it does turn into a bit of a false run affair. John Dunlop has had a long and illustrious career, and although during the last few seasons he has not hit the high notes he's been accustomed too, I’m sure no one would begrudge him a last few hurrahs before he bows out of the game that has served him so well. Now onto 16.05 where Sir Michael Stoute looks to potentially have a group class performer in a class 2 handicap off 93. At first glance he appears short enough at 5-2, but Sir Michael looks to have given this son of Pivotal plenty of time to develop, and does appear to have the look of his sire, along with the style he covers his ground. His seasonal debut is best ignored, after pulling Ryan Moore’s hands out for the first 3 furlongs of the mile, he stopped very quickly in the fairly soft ground at Windsor, not giving any indication at that stage he could have the potential to be a group performer. He was quickly dropped to a sprint trip over the same venue in June, and comprehensively accounted for a modest bunch of handicappers. It was the manner in which he improved from that run to his runner up position in July Lto that makes me think he is no doubt rapidly on an upward curve. In that race it looked for all the world he was coming to win his race, however he bumped into a typical Mark Johnston improver that day, who has subsequently added approximately 10lbs+ to his mark, with the 3rd home that day Heeraat also improving well approximately a stone in the interim. Tomorrow he looks to be drawn in the right place, should be suited by the ground along with the extra yardage, and looks very much like the one that they all have to beat. |

The Portland Handicap is once again upon us, and it does look as you would expect a fiercely competitive renewal. What makes this race even harder to decipher in terms of pure form is its distance, some where very close to being 5 and a ½ furlongs, thus giving the outright 5F horses that glimmer of hope against the more conventional 6F types.
Having gone through this race for several hours last night and early morning, I’m prepared to have a few shekels on the Mick Easterby trained Ancient Cross, who has now dropped below his last winning mark. I know a fair few have obviously been laid out for this race for a while, but I believe Spitting Mick has had this race in mind for this fellow since finishing a very close up 4th in last years renewal, when racing off his then mark of 100. He had his first run of the season over the conventional 6F on course, travelling well and running a fairly respectable race before tiring at the furlong pole, coming home under hands and heels thereafter. In fact on the whole he seems very well suited to Doncaster, with form prior to that seasonal debut of ….2nd of 10 btn a neck over 7F, 3rd of 19 btn ½ length over 6F, 5th of 21 beaten 2 ½ lengths over 6F, and as alluded to in last years contest was only beaten a ¾ of a length 4th of 21. Although he has some good form on a fast surface he does handle ground with cut in it, and also seems suited at running at the back end of the season. Lto at York ran a better race than his finishing position may suggest, having not had adequate cover for the majority of the contest, with everything happening a yard to fast for him over York’s 5F on fairly fast ground, still managing a respectable 6th the highest finishing position in the race from a single figured draw. His rail draw today may also be far from ideal, and will no doubt have to be dropped in with cover at an early stage, but the man on board more than capable of getting this initial job done. The booking of William Buick on a Mick Easterby animal in its own right more than catches the eye, having only had one previous winning ride for the stable, reiterating the handlers ambition to win this race by booking one of the best riders in the country, if not Europe to do the steering, with the said jockey also having a very good record on course over the years. |
