Bet day 152. 1pt E.W. Vito Volterra 19.10 Newcastle 7-1 PP BOG...

After looking through some of today’s racing I will be keeping my powder dry for the Newcastle card, in particular the 19.10, where I believe it could be worth having a small wager on the Michael Smith trained Vito Volterra.

After looking at angles into this race last night I did air on the side of caution until this morning before putting Vito Volta up, with heavy showers f/cast last night (which were only moderate) Imo would definitely have hindered his chance of continuing his reasonable record on course. There is however going to be a presence of showers and light rain throughout the day, but with the majority of the home straight having the lion’s share of the firm patches, Imo the volume of rain expected won’t markedly change the ground.

This horse has now slipped back down to a very competitive mark, and as alluded to love’s to hear his feet rattle, especially at Newcastle where his form on this G/firm ground at 7F/8F reads, 2-2-1-2 with his lifetime form on this going reading 1-2-2-1-10-2.  Although he just about gets the mile on a good day, he looks to appreciate the 7F, especially over a stiffer/testing venue that Newcastle provides. He did win over C/D on his second start back last season off 70, and went on to run some excellent races off his revised mark(s) thereafter, with the fast ground looking to play it’s part in those good performances.

He recently made his seasonal reappearance at Thirsk over a mile on the easier side of good, and helped force a very brisk pace. He travelled powerfully for a long way in that contest and had all of the field flat to the boards turning in, only floundering between the 2/furlong pole, and although a well beaten 5th had plenty more behind him than in front. That should have put him spot on for this, as his blow out at Southwell did last season,  and although he may be taken on for the lead I’m sure he wont mind that inconvenience, if anything he looks to appreciate a scrap at the head of affairs. Andrew Mullen has struck up a nice association with the yard, having a 21% strike rate from limited rides and is still showing a wee profit to level stakes, and for a yard that has limited/moderate stock at least they know how to get one ready.

Final bet day 154. 3pts win Lucky Numbers 16.55 Catterick 4-1 generally BOG.....

....Lucky Numbers who run’s in today’s 16.55 at Catterick went into my note book when punted from an overnight 8-1 down to 9-4 favourite, that was when making his debut for current connections at Ripon in April over 6F in soft ground. After helping force the pace in the small group on the far side finished a tired mid division 7th, and in truth never really looked like landing the punt at any stage of the contest. His next start was on course just over a week ago, where he dropped back in trip and sported the first time visor, where he also attracted good money in the market, but again never looked like justifying that hefty support. He did look to be doing all of his best work late on that day, suggesting that stepping back up to 6F would be most beneficial.

   He has won a couple of races at this distance, as well as placing on numerous other occasions from his 22 attempts, and on the balance of things pro rata has just about the best record over this trip within the field. The way the race could be run may set it up nicely for his style of racing, and Danny Tudhope has opted to ride him again this afternoon, I’m sure he could have went up to ride Mayo Man who’s no forlorn hope in the big sprint at Musselburgh today,  whom he has already won on twice this season for the same owner as Lucky Numbers. The yard tick along nicely and seem to do ok at this venue, and I’m certain Lucky Numbers is expected to put in a good shift later this afternoon, with the stable on a  rare recovery mission with those bookie chappies, and could well be smashed into favouritism in doing so.

Bet day 155. 2pts win Cheer’s Buddy 17.20 Nottingham. 9-2 generally BOG firms…


If your at a loose end and fancy treating the family to some top quality equine action then don’t go anywhere near Nottingham, or if you and your family would alternatively prefer watching a couple of mundane maidens, a poor excuse for a class 3 sprint and virtually 3 sellers, Nottingham will only be too kind to take £21 of you on arrival at their premier enclosure….. Come Racing, WTFF !!!!

Rant over and on with the business of attempting to weed out a winner, and it’s in the most competitive race on the card I have my eye on one, that’s Tony Coyle’s Cheers Buddy in the lucky last.

It is in all honesty a very poor race, but none the less there has to be a winner and he’s my idea of just that.  The horses mark through running in sellers / claimers on the A.W. surface over the winter has been reduced well over a stone, and has changed handlers a few times as well, saying that Tony Coyle is making a reasonable go of things as a trainer, and well capable of setting one up.  In these low level affairs recent wellbeing / form can be a massive positive, and Lto Imo Cheers Buddy showed his first worth while piece of form in an awfully long time, after being relatively handy throughout that class5 contest, stuck to his task well when plugging on nicely up Pontefract’s hill over a mile, and now contest’s his lowest class of handicap off his lowest ever BHA rating. This time last year in Ireland was contesting class 1 handicaps off marks in the 80’s, and did hit the frame on one of those occasion, which was over today’s trip of 10F. His only win on turf to date came last May on G/Firm ground over a mile, and may well be suited to decent under foot conditions, which he did not encounter that many times over the water.

   He has a very economical draw to jump from, and a very able claimer to alleviate an extra 3lbs off his ever diminishing mark, and Tony Coyle has every chance to keep his 100% strike rate in tact at Nottingham, especially now the Pipe animal doesn’t go.

Bet day 156. 2pts win Oratory 17.15 Carlisle 6-1 Sky b & SJ.....

.....Today at Carlisle one of my note book horses is running, Oratory, and after a reasonable analysis of the other runners and riders I’ve concluded he is worth a punt at his current odds of 6-1

The fact he’s been trained by 3 different trainers in his last 3 contests doesn’t fill you with confidence, however having thought him to be potentially well handicapped a few starts ago, Imo he has now slipped into the "dangerously" well handicapped bracket.

I did have a half fancy for him at York off 78 on his seasonal reappearance, where he was waited with towards the rear, making some good mid race progress only to be slightly impeded around the 2pole, Robert Winston Imo was hardly convincing on him thereafter, and almost allowed his mount to walk back from the furlong pole, I’ll assume he must have desperately needed it. His next start was at Haydock over 10F in soft ground for Keith Dalgleish, and after being ridden  wide throughout came to press the pace setters a long way out, and was still in the mix passing the 2 pole only to fold very tamely. The form of that race is turning out to fairly decent at that level, with the winner running a decent 3rd off his revised mark, with the 2nd, 3rd , 4th , 5th  and 6th home all winning handicaps on there next runs.

  Paul Midgley saddled him for his latest start, and apprentice affair over a mile at York ridden by Ned Curtis. I know the lad’s still young and learning the trade but the ride he gave Oratory would have no doubt came in for some criticism. After jumping well he let the horse be shuffled back to stone dead last, and disputed that position for the majority of the contest. When young Ned Curtis asked him for his effort up the middle of the track his horse responded well, a never nearer 5th, looking most definitely like he would benefit from stronger handling.

Miami Gator who loves it around here could also be potentially nicely handicapped, but should at least ensure a nice pace for Mickey Fenton to settle Oratory behind, and should be more than capable of a bold show off his career low mark, with ground and trip looking fine.

Highlife Dancer in Today’s 15.10 at Redcar Imo looks a bit of value at 14’s, with a few in the field looking shorter in the betting than I anticipated.

This horse has now dropped down to a fairly attractive mark , this almost certainly down to some combined poor runs late last and early this season, and because of this has dropped 7lb below his last winning mark gained at Epsom last August. He may well be a horse to catch in the summer months, having struggled in both of his previous season at the back end, and although he has won in soft I get the impression he requires a decent surface to show his best.

Lto in an amateur affair on a decent surface should in all honesty have achieved a better position than he did, however there did not appear to be any real excuses, after travelling fairly well just off the pace looked to move well into the front echelons approaching the 2pole, only to flatten out, and at one point Miss Doolan threatened to ride a finish and ask him a question! (The perils of backing in amateur contests I suppose).  Man of the moment Martin Harley takes over at the helm and has a very good record when riding him, and Imo looks to have made the transition into a solid professional, and if his progress continues may well find himself in a top job in the near future. The yard are in cracking form at present, if their horse aren’t winning are placing they’re running sound races, and after drawing a blank with their 2 runners here yesterday may find compensation today.

Now onto Emmuska for the Hannon and Hughes combination, who both have very sound records at Leicester. After seeing the race course relatively late last season she steadily improved with each race, beating none other than Shantaram in her maiden last September on her third lifetime start, and looked a filly to keep on side of. Nto she was upped markedly in class into a very hot class 2 nursery, with the very classy Pimpernel making light work of that field, with more than jut Emmuska looking out of their depth. I would have assumed she would have been put away after that run, but instead Richard Hannon kept her going over the poly surface and picked up a couple of nice enough nurseries, beating a few nice types in doing so.

She made her seasonable bow off her revised mark of 80 at Newbury a couple of weeks ago, and made a pleasing reappearance for the majority of that contest, fading late on under a hand ride giving very much the impression she was in desperate need of that run(only a head behind Stellar Express, won since). Richard Hughes whom discarded her that day takes the reigns for the first time, and she could well be the typical improver the yard seems to excel with, jumping from her nice draw today.
