The mention of Royal Relief reminds me of another horse not yet mentioned on the thread , anyone remember Simian ridden by Davy Moore and trained by Miss Aureole Sinclair , she trained Arctic Actress as well but seem to remember Davy Moore resembling a rodeo rider although it must have been effective I guess

Anybody remember the doughty old mare Eyecatcher. She finished 3rd to Rag Trade in 1976 and Red Rum in 1977. She was never good enough to win the race but she was a sound jumper and you always got a run for your money.

Brendan Powell has just won the first at Newton Abbot. Reminds me of a story he told when he was at Tim Forster's yard. He arrived for work one day and there was a new horse in the yard. Powell asked Forster what the horse was like. Forster replied "he's a bit like you, he's Irish, he's thick and, if you kick him hard enough, he'll do what you want". Classic. Forster was a real character.

Great names ekbalco. Golden Cygnet's win in the 1978 Supreme Novices Hurdle is breathtaking - never had a race. Sadly he lost his life in the Scottish Champion Hurdle and your namesake suffered a fatal fall in the Fighting Fifth (I think).

can anyone remember a horse called hubli (would have been around 85 onwards sure it was pipe's horse) only remember it as i was 17 and probably had my biggest bet at the time, a £50 double.
1st horse had won at evens and on the way home from work i popped in the bookies to listen to the commentary.i did however have a splitting headache and felt like sh1t, anyway commentary sounde as though it was beat and so i walked out cursing. got home and went to bed to get rid of the headache.got up a couple of hours later and read the rest of the racing results.......IT HAD ONLY GONE AND WON......"GET THE FECK IN"  2 EVENS SHOT £200 RETURN......RESULT |

I'd forgotten about Father Delaney. He won the Massey Ferguson in 1979. He carried top weight in the Whitbread later that season and was 2nd to Royal Mail. He was a good horse.

pauli, too young (just) to remember Gay Spartan in his prime. I'm sure I remember him running at Cheltenham Festival in early 80's, poss in the then, Ritz Club Chase, but sadly wasn't the force of old!

If my memory is right,one of Gay Spatans missed Gold Cups was caused
by a horrible fall at Stockton, he demolished a fence and was lucky to get up from it. |

Credo's Daughter - Good chasing mare owned by James Bolam and trained I think by Syd Woodman.
Jody's Boy - Ran up a sequence in the Autumn on the Norther tracks around 1988. Pattern Maker - GW Richards trained half brother to Bula whose carer was ended early due to injury. Tamalin - GW Richards trained. Ran in the Hennessey once. Red and white hoops. Rathconrath - High class Fred Winter juvenile come useful 2m handicap chaser wearing the purple hearts of Mrs Miles Valentine. |

Even keel ... tearaway with Barry Brogan in the saddle Credit Call...probably put hunter chases on the map Classical Charm...remember it cruising up to Celtic Shot at the last Kybo.......lovely horse , killed in action  Rough and Tumble....must have covered the national course in 4 mile every year glued to the inside. Killiney..........what a prospect |

You may be right Shalimah. Gay Spartan ran once in the 1979-80 season and he won at Stockton giving away lumps of weight. Later in the season he suffered an injury and Tony Dickinson believed it must have originally occurred at Stockton. Therefore, he could not run in the Gold Cup. In the 1978-79 season Gay Spartan was withdrawn from the Gold Cup a week or two before the race having again suffered an injury. Again he may have picked up the original injury in the fall at Stockton. In any event it would have been some spectacle had he been able to take on Alverton in 1979 and Tied Cottage in 1980.

Apologist and pauli , a friend of mine owned one of those 3 before selling to the Sheik . Got beaten in a bumper at 2/1 approx the first time out . The one that beat him won the 2 mile Champion chase a few years later . You never know what you are going to run into in a bumper in Ireland !

You certainly don't Kelly. Arkle ran in 2 bumpers and showed no real promise. He didn't turn out too bad did he?

At the height of his powers they had plans to run Arkle in The Queen Alexandra Stakes ( a better race in those days ). Would have been very interesting but it didn`t come to anything.

Pauli , Arkle was ridden in his first 2 bumper races by Mark Hely Hutchinson , started 5/1 first time out at Mullingar ( not a premium track ) finished 3rd (9th Dec 1961 ) . 17 days later he ran 4th at Leopardstown on St Stephens day , again at 5/1 .
25 days later he won ( to a shocked silence in the bookies I was in that day ) a 3 mile maiden hurdle at Navan . He was 20/1 , and I think his stable companion was 6/4 jolly . First time I saw him in person was at Leopardstown on 23 feb 1962 , he won a novice chase pulling up at 1/2 . |

Yes Pauli, Father Delaney was a very good horse and one of my dads favourites at the time. He raced in bright yellow colours, trained by Peter Easterby I think it was. Can't remember who rode him though.

Cancello - Crump horse who won the Mackeson when it was switched to Haydock for a season. Wore wine red colours.
Karenomore - a regular around Wetherby with Richard Fahey in the saddle. Kevinsfort - One of the lesser lights in the yard when Jimmy Fitz was having his heyday but useful in his own grade. Bolands Cross - Classy Gaselee chaser but never quite lived up to the hype that surrounded him. |

Does anyone rememeber Shock Result producing a 'shock result' winning a 5 runner at Newbury beating both Winter legends , Pendil & Bula. The bookies must have been in danger of getting a hernia carrying their cash home.
