Dixton house won the ritz club chase (w.hill now) which used to be run after the gold cup. I remember it well,I was bang in trouble for the week going in to the race,my two bankers of the meeting, kribensis (champ. hdle) and sabin duloir,Arkle,(who had beaten the winner 20l last time out) had both got stuffed. It was a terrible day weather wise, but after seeing dessie get up to win the gold cup and then having on dixton at 13-2 it turned in to probably one of my best ever days at cheltenham,not financialy, but emotionally !

anyone remember a horse called soothsayer, he was a american horse who came over here and was trained by fred winter.fto he ran at ascot on a wednesday which was on the bbc,how times have changed.well the sweat was dripping of him in the paddock and he drifted out from about 5-4 to 3-1,but apparently he always done this and dually rompted home,later on was placed in the gold cup.
think lighter was with john edwards,seen him at a stud in worcester were we sent a mare,fine big horse he was. |

 me and a mate were the official new halen fan club , he UR in seagrams grand national after getting a lump of gorse stuck in his back sock ,after jumping the last he veered straight across the track then stopped with his head over the rail by a woman in the crowd ,sadly the video on u tube doesnt cover the stragglers coming in ,I often wondered if it was his owner who was in the crowd ,it was a strange thing to do ,what ever, but then he was a very strange horse  |

You won't believe it knot in wood but I was at Cheltenham when he finished 2nd to Ten Up in the Gold cup with Bula back in 3rd , the conditions that day were atrocious and ruined a good suit & a pair of shoes , the conditions did for Bula tbh and stretched his stamina too far.

Yes Soothsayer's 2nd in the gold cup was 1975 , Pendil was brought down by High Ken the year before and beaten in a photo by The Dikler the year before that in the 1973 race.

i think i was there myself hayden,but it was so long ago im not to sure! was it the year they called the meeting of after the gold cup.seem to remember i backed brown lad (who i thought was a good thing) in the sun alliance,but then they called itof.

Jinxy Jack was always a favourite trained by Gordon Richards. Had a big following up North but was never quite top class, finished down the field in the Champion Hurdles won by the likes of Kribensis, Morley Street and Granville Again.
Coulton was another one around at the same time with a big reputation who never really delivered but did manage to win the Cathcart in ’95. And Carvills Hill, well, after he moved to Pipe from Dreaper I was in a bookies in Galway and two oldtimers were talking about his chance at Cheltenham. “That horse will never win a Gold Cup” the old sages remarked. That was his first run for Pipe and he slaughtered the classy Aquilifer by half the track in really testing ground giving him more than a stone. An awesome performance but his career will always be remebered for the Golden Freeze/Pitman debacle in the Gold Cup.
I remeber getting there early on the Thursday and taking all the 11-10 I could find on the rails. He demolished the first fence and nearly broke his back, Freeze added to the pressure and my money was gone before halfway. To his credit he went down on his sword but never raced again. I lost large that day but I still fondly remember Carvills as a great racehorse. |

Flash Imp for Smyth who was placed in a champion Hurdle and won a Great Metropolitan at Epsom when they used to actually go across the downs and join the course proper over the far side(Had a great scrap with Super Nova)
Glanford Brig, a front running Northern oss who actually ran a great race in Royal Frolics Gold Cup, would set off at a great pace of knots |

Yes sad race on reflection , my memory of the horse was also negative as I can still hear the cheering now when it fell at Cheltenham , think that's what put me off all this Ireland v england nonsense.

The Langholm dyer .... remember it well .. I work in logistics and sold a conveyor sytem to the Edinborough woolen mills which i believe sponsored the horse :)

minardi...you're spot on, The Langholm Dyer was owned by Edinburgh Woolen Mill. Was unlucky in 91 National, was going ok when saddle slipped.

Hayden – cheers for the link, good memories. The most noticable aspect about the race was Carvills Hill pushing on trying to win the Gold Cup with 6 to jump and Golden Freeze is happily being pullle-up in the backgorund. As though his job was done!
Kriskin – good shout with Sabin Du Loir, another Pipe stalwart. Lost his unbeaten record at the Festival when third in the Arkle to none other than Waterloo Boy. Raced against those top-class heroes Blazing Walker, Celtic Shot, Barnbrook Again, Morley Street and Desert Orchid. Doesn’t seem the same these days. |

Michael Dickinson dominated the Champion Chase from 1982-85 with Rathgorman (1982) and Badsworth Boy (1983,84 and 85). I remember Rathgorman winning by 20 lengths under Kevin "Sooty" Whyte. Can also remember Badsworth Boy at Wetherby on Boxing day, he seemed to win the Castleford Chase under 12-7 every year.

I remember Rondetto. He was one of the casualties at the infamous 23rd fence in Foinavon's National. The loose horse that started the carnage was called Popham Down (a rather apt name).

I rember Floyd well. He won the Fighting Fifth in 1987 and 88. Think he was ridden by Simon Sherwood on one of those occasions.

Talking of the Fighting Fifth. What about that crazy character Bird's Nest. Won the race 3 times in the late 1970's. He was brilliant on his day but a nightmare for punters as you never knew which Bird's Nest was going to turn up. I often had a saver on him just in case.

My earliest memories were Pointsman, Lochroe and Linwell who dominated the top chases when I was a child. The first Gold Cup winner I saw on TV was Pas Seul who was the first of many top class horses owned by the Rogerson's including Charter Party, Cuckolder and Salmon Spray. All ridden by John Haine whose favourite horse was Buona Notte. Pendil and The Dikler who I first saw at Didmarton ptp are also great memories. Baulking Green also started in ptp-I first saw him at Barbery Castle when he was a close second to a horse ridden by Laurie Morgan, the Olympic 3 day event champion. We had 20/1 without the favourite about Baulking Green that day when he was still trained by Colin Nash. Heighlin was another long priced win that stays in the memory along with Oh So Risky, another Triumph win for Elsworth.
