Great memories,most of these were listened to on extel or watched on Saturdays terrestial tv.I wonder if the memories of todays horses will hold similiar memories in 20yrs time.Pre all weather,summer jumps break,etc maybe wasnt all bad,sometimes seems all about numbers on a screen these days.

I can't speak for the 60's but the 70's & 80's was clearly a golden age and it has been a steady decline throughout the 90's to where we are today. The superb chasers of that era were bred and trained to be chasers, the racecourse hurdles were stiffer and the chase fences were taller and stiffer and needed to be jumped. As the hurdles/fences have got easier it suits a different type of horse where there is less emphasis on jumping and more on speed.
There are still great horses from time to time but often they don't have much competition to worry about. In the last five years there are only about half a dozen outstanding long distance chasers and they are miles clear if you think about it. |

Would certainly agree with that storm alert , was looking at the Champion Hurdle roll of honour since the triple success of Istabraq and tbh with the greatest respect to both horse & connections there are no greats in the list , granted they can only beat what's put in front of them.

Duke Of Devonshire`s brilliant hurdler which was virtually unbeatable on fast ground. One of the best hurdlers not to win the Champion. Tragically killed at Windsor. Grand Canyon Pat Samuel`s terrific black NZL bred jumper trained by Derek Kent. Victories included the SGB Chase and the Colonial Cup in USA. Forged a great partenrship with Ron Barry. The Grey Bomber Denys Smith`s potential champion hurdler. Strong favourite for the Triumph but the talented grey was tragically killed when electrocuted in a field when he stepped on a downed cable. Decent Fellow Toby Balding trained this magnificent dual performer. A Group winner on the Flat and winner of the Irish Sweeps Hurdle at Leopardstown over Hurdles. The Laird Jim Joel`s ever popular chaser of the late 60`s early 70`s. Trained by Bob Turnell his victories included the Massey Ferguson Gold Cup and Cathcart at the Festival. Set Point Lavinia Duchess Of Norfolk`s prolific chaser of the 70`s which was trained by Lady Herries. Big race wins included the Eider Chase, Rowland Meeryck and a dead heat with Current Gold in the Charlie Hall. Isle Of Man One of the best chasers to carry the Queen Mothers colours. Forged a great partnership with Bill Smith and fittingly won the Game Spirit Chase at Newbury for Her Majesty. Glanford Brigg Anybody the other side of 40 will never forget this gutsy front runner who took some catching on a going day. Levaramoss A very talented hurdler trained by Tony Ingham who will probably be best remembered for his tendency to dig his heels in at the start and refuse to race. But he was a good un when he felt like running. and to end the list I better add myself The Mighty Mac Words will never sum up how good a racehorse and particularly jumper of a fence that I was. and don`t forget some of my former stable mates: Dorlesa, Cavity Hunter, Right Hand Man, Bregawn, Broncho II, Gay Spartan, Wayward Lad, Dan The Millar, Tommy Joe, Political Pop, Ashley House, Prince Rowan, By The Way, etc, etc. |

The memory of the sight of Tommy Carmody going over a fence on Gay Spartan or Wayward Lad would bring a tear to a glass eye.

I've probably missed the main point pauli but the observations from me would be..
-Defending the title successfully is a rarity -The old list seems to contains far shorter priced winners -The old list are all mentioned on the thread somewhere -You could argue that almost all the new list were not not the top hurdler of that season. All things equal the old list looks to be a stone superior ? |

HAYDEN, your list and your statement that there are no greats in it is correct. I was merely confirming your assertion by providing an alternative list from another era. I think it shows that the 1970's was a golden era for NH racing which continued into the 1980's as Sea Pigeon won the Champion again in 1981 (the oldest horse to do so). Of course everything is relative and, as you say, you can only beat what's in front of you.

Yes agree and as you say add another Sea Pigeon triumph and the head and then the Persian War triple on the tail and the slightly extended era looks even more golden.

You appear to be a big Dickenson fan like all of us - can you answer this question. I heard a story that W Six Times was so named after a telegram was sent to his owner by Michael Dickinson. The horse was unnamed at the time and the telegram said "Worked Well. Will Win. When Wanted." - hence W Six Times. Do you know if this story is true? - would be nice if it was. |

earlier poster put up the horse "memberson",does any one remember him winning the 4mile new years day chase at cheltenham,beating knock hill.
this was a truly amazing race,as memberson came from a diffrent county to catch knock hill (who i backed) on the run in.these races dont seem to happen any more for some reason. |

I backed Memberson in what I think was the 3m 6f Crudwell Cup at Warwick and we won plenty. As you get older I guess you tend to thinka lot of things were better but talk of a golden age of jumping is surely correct with Sea Pidgeon etc. The festival used to enthrall me then and now it is something I look forward to but without the intensity and fervour of those great days.
