i was just looking at rp trophy again and it occurred to me what a great looking derby prospect roaring lion is . close coupled well balanced , low to the ground with a tendency to run left , tenacious , plus top class 2yo form . the neg is hes a funny bred derby contender , but , i trust my eye . hes trained by the best in uk and he,ll be ridden by oisin or frankie . 16.0 looks big , a long way to go i know , but , like him for this

ya hes the johnston first string and while nothing is impossible he really got a hard race to win that group 3 to make his form look good over the winter . top notchers, well they only need cajoling in the best races g1 . i,m not into elarqam . based on running not pedigree . to be honest he looks like a group 3 performer . not having a go , im just offering my opinion . hes a good horse , however , a word has come from johnstons ever since they won one with mister baileys . they got something 9/10 they didnt . they always got hype

I spotted Roaring Lion too gpz and had a couple of loose change bets at 36.0 and 32.0
All depends if last year's 2-y-o's have trained on or not |

Roaring Lion ran a very good race, but I do like the 3rd The Pentagon a lot and who was off for 3 weeks prior to the race; the latter drifted like a barge in the betting.
I also like the winner Saxon Warrior (who does not given he's also trained by O'Brien similarly The Pentagon) but there must be a doubt about his staying the trip...good temperament though. Another one could be Amadeo Modigliani but he is quite pacey, according to O'Brien his trainer. |

it was just that compact fighter look in a top class race . if you watched docs about northern dancer that was his mo . really wanted it and even though he couldnt sprint as fast as saxon warrior he made me think . hello

ignore my previous comment a sherbert too many and getting carried away with myself ! i do think saxon warrior and roaring lion look the top 2 2yo s from last season though and i do really like the way roaring lion shapes as a derby horse . i think something will really have to come on to usurp one of these as the top 3yo colt this season .

The Pentgon is entered for the Ballysax - one of the recognised Epsom Derby trials - this saturday at Leopardstown.

Not a run expected from The Pentagon despite the bad ground; he was beaten a staggering 8l, a long way from his Racing Post Trophy run behind Saxon Warrior and Roaring Lion.

The picture for this race is none the clearer post the weekend; The Pentagon ran a shocking race; Amedeo Modigliani sidelined until 2nd half of the season; Gustav Klimt won his 2000G trial, and Roaring Lion in the Craven next thursday but I doubt very much one or both will be aimed at the Derby.
Saxon Warrior - the fav for this race - is going straight to the 2000G the market would be none to wiser until post 5th May, I think. If he wins or runs well finishing strongly in the 2000G he'll undoubtedly be a shorter price fav than present; a one horse race similar to Australia in the Epsom Derby, but will he????? |

The Pentagon is one of a few of AOB's entered for the Chester Vase on 9th May. Let's hope he credits himself much better than in the Ballysax; Delano Roosevelt is another of AOB entered for the race.

Saxon Warrior is in the Epsom Derby, who'd you like to be his pilot? Personally, I'd like to see Donnacha O'Brien given the chance again, why? Donnacha rode a near perfect race in the 2000G; he also rides the horse in every bit of his work and knows him very well. I'd prefer him to Moore on Saxon Warrior in the Epsom Derby any time.
I do not wish to see the rides given by Moore to Minding and US Army Ranger ever again at Epsom. |

Minding won the Oaks because Minding was head and shoulders above the others, and not because of Moore - Moore rode like an apprentice! As for US Army Ranger he came from a different county (last 3, 16th straight) to be 2nd whereas the winner was never out of the 1st 8 throughout.
Moore was awful in both those races. |

Chester vase today could give us a big clue with something to potentially oppose Saxon Warrior with.
I have been very taken with Svenna Star and the two he beat are vying for favouritism. |

Young Rascal a worthy second favourite and it will take a decent Dante winner to usurp him in that spot for me.

I was impressed with Young Rascal given the traffic problem and suitability of course. I think he'd be fav if Saxon Warrior does not show unless Derrinstown Trial this weekend throws up a clear-cut winner eg The Pentagon. But Saxon Warrior is the only one if he stays (small if).

As the market seems to have completely given up on him I'd like to come back to the OP's Roaring Lion.
Reviewing the Guineas again, it struck me what a tremendous race he ran, which I didn't notice first time round. He's one of the last off the bridle but, having tracked Masar through, finds himself racing alone on a fairly dead rail throughout the last furlong. Plenty of horses would have dropped back in that scenario but he sticks to his guns really well, making up all of the 9 lengths he was beaten by Masar in the Craven, in finishing 5th. As he's currently the only horse in training to give Saxon Warrior a big fright (one could still argue he should have won) and is possibly heading to the Dante next, I would urge the OP not to tear up his/her ticket and advise anyone else to get him onside now, while you can, cheaply. |

I think with Rostropovich likely to be running in the French Derby than here it could be another stablemate of his troubling Saxon Warrior, but which one though. Any one of the trios from the Derrinstown Trial at Leopardstown on sunday perhaps; The Pentagon (Heffernan) will have his preferred ground (good/good to firm) at Leopardstown and Nelson (winner of the Ballysax), both, will have a 3lb pull with Delano Roosevelt.
If Saxon Warrior stays the trip it is his to lose, I believe. |

Pleased to see Nordic Lights still in the Dante. His sire, Intello, already has Young Rascal advertising his claims. Someone is very confident this horse won't be winning the Derby after laying at 250+ even after he was left in the Dante. Though not entered at Epsom, a Dante win would see him supplemented.

Could Hazapour emulate Harzand in the Epsom Derby next month after an easy victory in the Derrinstown Trial a race the former won too? I think he'd have a chance as good as the rest with the exception of Saxon Warrior (if he stays).
