5 year old profit looks to be entirely reliant on one huge priced win. Wonder if the sample is not significant yet to know the appropriate prices

We're definitely not idiots Kincsem.  Well you're definitely not anyway - that has been proved many times over on this thread alone.

The case for Eagle Top (as a value bet at the prices anyway), is that he was, for a long time, the Gosden No.1 for the King George.  In the event, despite underfoot conditions potentially not really suiting, he ran a cracker, some may even suggest he was the moral winner.

For a 4yo he is lightly raced and we may not have seen the best of him.  Lto was a disaster but the ground at Newbury was horrid that day and I'm putting a line through it.  In fact you can say we should forget a number of his runs.....Newbury last time out, Snow Sky and Smullen had them in their pockets in the Hardwicke, Sandown he wasn't fit, 2015 King George given too much to do.

I'm pretty sure a good ground Arc,  a nice draw, a mid-div position and a well-timed challenge will see Eagle Top post a PB on Sunday.

Any horse that gets nutted in that season's King George shouldn't really be 150+ for the Arc should it?  With all the Golden Horn/Jack Hobbs talk plus the Newbury abomination it does feel slightly as though Eagle Top has gone under the radar.

I quite like the fact he wasn't even entered in the Cumberland Lodge this Saturday either.  very winnable and, on paper, a perfect steeping stone after of Newbury.  But the big man's pointed him toward Longchamp and I think we should take the hint.

The Gosden No.1 for the King George? Before or after he pulled out Golden Horn....... and to be fair its difficult to know good a race the king George was Postponed has won since although in a race he should have been winning at 11/10 and the 3rd and 4th have massively underperformed. You are getting a price but to link it so closely to a KG 2nd in probably the worst KG in living memory is being generous to Eagle top. He will need to run 10 pounds better than he has ever run to win the race, even to be in the top 5 i would imagine he will need a career best

I'm too with Eagle Top . Just five ew at 50/1 - just a small interest that's all.

Does anyone know what the draw is yet for all the runners  ?

Headmaster, you don't seem to be a hype bandwagon type.
This race has a high random factor.  The draw will make a difference.   Any Group 1 or 2 winner with form at 12f+ is worth a look.
Evens before the draw for a 5yo conceding weight to Derby winners in an 18+ runner race with a big draw bias is crazy.

Now that 'Golden Horn' has been supplemented for the 'Arc' will 'Found' and/or 'Free Eagle' be rerouted to the Champion Stakes?; it is also Gp1, but much less competitive especially with the probable 'fav', 'Jack Hobbs' coming down in distance - it must be tempting for connections of both I imagine.

I disagree, it might turn out better than I think but on paper it looks an Arc lacking strength in depth to me. Only two have posted typical all age Gp1 figures and that's Treve and Golden Horn. The others need both of those two to run below form to have a chance, which could happen, or they need to improve past them, which could also happen but looking at the profiles of the rest I'd say that's less likely.

Eagle Top is some value when compared to some of those shorter than him, like New Bay and Found, who have worse form in the book. The trouble is he lacks a decent turn of foot, his best run as a 3yo was at Royal Ascot where there was a bit of a pace collapse in front of him. He's unlikely to get that here but could make the places although I'd have Flintshire ahead of him.

what is a typical all age group 1 figure figgis iyo?

i just want an example horses wise...so would you rate the lockinge as an example of a typical figure or the queen anne say as an example
By:

When: 01 Oct 15 20:42
Harry, well there's a range and the rest are not even close to the bottom of that range to me, apart from Flintshire if he repeated last year's effort. I'd say New Bay is still an unknown quantity, although I think he will have to be better than Fabre's usual standard of Arc winner to beat an on form Treve, more like Peintre Celebre than Carnegie. The Lockinge was in the low end of my Gp1 figures. The Queen Anne wasn't run at a fast overall pace, but Solow has posted Gp1 figures before.

thats fair enough it was just i do see group 1 horses in this just lower grade group 1 horses

i still see free eagle as a proper group 1 horse and not far behind treve on recent runs we just haven't seen him much to fully expose him...dolniya was peaked for dubai but is a solid horse at her level

i see flintshire as a low grade borderline group 1 horse...an american grade 1 horse but not european

new bay is a complete unknown imo because the handbrake hasn't been off although i thought we had a good siter in the french derby, which said he is limited

found is probably a group 1 filly against her own sex but she is no world beater
By:

When: 01 Oct 15 20:57
I agree with most of that, harry, apart from Free Eagle. I thought he was a reasonable standard Gp1 3yo, I backed him in last year's Champion Stakes, where he was beaten fair and square imo despite the ground. I just think 3yos need to improve from 3 to 4 at least in line with wfa. After backing The Grey Gatsby in the Eclipse I came to the conclusion he hadn't trained on and I think his subsequent runs have proved that. Just a pity I didn't suss it before the Eclipse Sad. I'm still not convinced Free Eagle has trained on either, especially as I thought TGG would've beaten him in the POW. He was running well last time until hampered but I'm not sure it was a race that proved much, the time was ordinary and I don't rate the form.
By:
harry callaghan
When: 01 Oct 15 21:18
well i'm still looking at him positively he wasn't tough enough to take that ground in last years champion but still ran well and as far as i am concerned all the runners had prepped before the POW, the grey gatsby had had 2 runs and was trained to the minute for the race, plus had first time headgear, free eagle injected the pace into the race a long way from home...the grey gatsby was obviously asked to peak that day so i still think free eagle has improved just can't be sure how much

is that good enough here, probably not but when i look at him i don't think he has been bottomed and may just be able of stepping up again he will need to but the step up in trip may just bring about improvement and he isn't short of gears

You could be right, harry, and looking back I was a bit harsh on Free Eagle, my ratings at the weights are Golden Horn 94, Treve 93, Flintshire 90 and Free Eagle only 1lb behind on 89 and he's 6lbs clear of the next so I should've included him with Flintshire. I just think Free Eagle may go backwards.

well not sure but these are the horses in front of us and free eagle has only had 2 starts this season...he may blow out but he will seriously disappoint me if he were to bomb against these horses...if he could step forward he has to run a big race and he is a lot tougher than the horse who used to bounce from one run to another...we will see, fingers crossed he can back up... i may just be sniffing glue with the horse but we are getting the right price in which to do our coconuts!!

Well Free Eagle has no chance lol  - reason being that Sky Bet tipping disaster "Alex Hammond" has just put the horse up as her selection EW.

She has to be the 2nd biggest loser in the racing tipsters, just behind the buffoon calling him self the "Newsboy" from the Daily Mirror - Dave Yates

Treve has yet to win a race in a very fast paced race. Her 2 Arc wins were in slow times. The 2013 win was the slowest in 25 years, some 23 lbs below the average rating and a whopping 38 lbs below Peintre Celebre. Last year ranks 20th 11 lbs below the average.

Perhaps Mdme Head might regret putting in a pacemaker if they go an above average pace? She has a great turn of foot but can she show it in a fast pace race?
By:

When: 01 Oct 15 23:18
I have a good final time performance for last year's race, nothing exceptional but decent and her 3lbs allowance gives that a boost. In my view she'd be beaten if there was a horse as good as, say, Dylan Thomas in the field but this has to be the weakest year for older middle distance horses I've seen for a while. For me this year's King George form wouldn't even be good enough for 3rd spot in an average year. I also think that really fast run Arcs are in the minority and that's why a turn of foot is often more decisive in this race than some others.
By:

An average is an average by definition. So there have been 12 Arc  races above average pace and 13 below. She hasn't yet raced in an above average pace race Arc let alone a very fast pace one. There's nothing in her record to suggest otherwise imo. Like I said, her 2014 time puts her 20th out of 25.

Not sure what this means? I'm saying the Arc is more often run at a less than true early pace so on average it is run slower than the King George, for instance.

She may have been lucky somewhat to win her 2 Arcs when there were no top class 3 yr olds at the 12f running against her. Orfevre was stuffed by here but his year to win was the previous year. I am not belittling her achievement in winning 2 Arcs but she may have got lucky. Of course, she could do so again.

Is this correct? Only I can immediately think of the Sea The Stars, Zarkava, Solemia and Rail Link races as ones that threw up low-ish figures.

Its a possibility, of course, but even more likely that she would be better over shorter in a fast run race where they would on average go faster than over 12f.

A strong pace might not suit others such as GH. The stronger stayers would get into it.

I don't think she's outstanding in the times she can run by any means but it'll take a good one to beat her. The older horses just don't look capable and one of them will have to run above its usual ability to beat her. Obviously you can never say a 3yo is fully exposed but everything apart from Golden Horn and New Bay has shown limitations. Golden Horn would be a worthy winner and it would be a tremendous achievement if he can retain his form for this but I'll let him win without my cash as I usually find it pays to avoid runners given this kind of prep.

Could New Bay be as good as Golden Horn? Possibly, but one of the reasons I respect Fabre is because he's managed to win this race by prepping his runners perfectly to peak on the big day, runners who in my view weren't exactly great horses on the whole, with the exception of the Peintre Celebre win, but they peaked on the big day either against weakish fields or against better horses who ran flat.

History tells us that this is a 3 years old race to lose. If there is a good one in the field, a classic horse inparticular, then they have the advanatge of most likely being on an upward curve. Especially so when the WFA is taken into accoutn because my research says they are favoured at this time of the year. If they are given the ideal prep then you have to look to them first.

If there isn't a really top class 3yr then the 4 yr olds have the opportunity. They might be late developers (eg Sakhee, Dylan thomas.)

I think that 5+ tend to win when there aren't any really good younger horses. Marienbard got lucky, Sulamani(3) should really  have won.Tony Bin and Mtoto were both 5. Kahyasi was 2nd fav but I don't think he was top class. Star Appeal won in a bog at 119/1. That's the last 3 5+ winners and takes us back 40 years.

7 winners of the Arc in 27 years. One in every 4 Arcs. One trainer. That's some record so he knows what he has to do to win the race. I don't it matters one jot if perhaps his only really top class horse was Peintre Celebre. He himself agrees with that. New Bay will be prepped to run to his max, you can be sure of that. The horse will improve - by how much we will find out soon enough.
By:

Personally I would say only Mtoto out of those 5yos was truly top class but I don't think he was given a great prep for the Arc, 5 runs beforehand, taking in the Eclipse and King George, the latter being particularly difficult to take in as well as the Arc. He wasn't specifically geared at the Arc and in the end he was only just beaten. I don't see how you can compare the 5yo Treve against most 5yos that turn up in this race. If more 5yos with Treve's credentials had been in the race I'm sure there'd be more 5yo winners.

Something greatly in Treve's favour compared to most older runners that run here is by my reckoning she hasn't peaked this season and I believe she will on the day that matters. There is an argument that she hasn't proved herself the same mare this year as she's beaten poor horses, etc. If she'd merely won comfortably last time by a length or two I'd say it was a valid argument, however, I was left in no doubt by the turn of pace she showed she's as good as she was, the strength of the opposition didn't matter.

It does if there is another top class horse in the race. Personally I wouldn't have any of his other winners against Treve, even Hurricane Run, you might differ.

I think this 5yo stat business just boils down to one of two approaches. You either take a generalised view of the slant the stats show and oppose 5yos every year because you know on average they fair poorly (or at least they have in the past, if the race suddenly threw up a few 5yo winners then I assume those people would change with the trend). Or you take each horse and each renewal on its merits and make your own mind up. Both approaches could make a profit but I prefer the latter.

I think my point is that whilst winning 2 Arcs is exceptional, given that she has won those races in relatively slow times, and not beaten a top class 3 yr old in either of them, the jury is out for me on just how top class she may be.

I'm pretty certain that NB could be as good as Treve. Don't forget that their trials were run inalmost idnetical times when the weights were taken into account. Much was made of Treves finishing split but on my watch NB was only 0.1 secs behind her over the last 2f . That's bugger all and it can be argued that the jockey was easier on him.

I do think that the race boils down to these 2 plus GH. His Derby win was good enough to win this if he can repeat. I know the prep is against him, |I've argued that myself but I can't write him off because of that.

Of the others, Found has it all to prove as does FE but at the prices a case can be made as it can at the prices for quite a few others which I posted about earlier. We both know that if a horse runs it has some sort of chance. Chance plays a big part in any horserace and its possible indeed probable that at least one of the fancied horses will seriously under-perform for whatever reason opening the day to an outsider. By my reckoning 1 in 4 Arcs have been won  like that.
By:
Sandown
When: 02 Oct 15 00:37
I think I can say that its not just the 5 yr stat that gives me doubts about the Treve. I do accept that the stats are the backgound and each case has to be taken on its merits. Eventually it all boils down to whether i thin I have any kind of edge over the market. At evens there really is no juice in it. We can back evens chances every day. There are some where i really do feel that that price is far too big. I put up Time Test as an example of that. I'm putting up Trev as an example of the opposite. Neither winning or losing proves anything but over-time we have to live by ourt judgement. Opposing awhat I consider to be a poor price favourite who I think should be well odds against is no big deal.
