I think the king George is the obvious race for champ fever, I thought it jumped better the faster they went and it would have a fair chance, however would not get the gold cup trip in a horsebox races far to free just think it would empty commin up the hill.
By:
Pace will help him settle better, still be worried about him smacking one though as his races have been punctuated with mistakes (over fences)
By:
on dosages he should stay the Gold Cup trip perfectly well, whether being too keen will prevent that from happening remains to be seen
a 'good starting out place' is what I would call the race today, a very long way away from the level of form that will be required against the top horses |
By:
Thing what would put me off Fever in the KG would be going right handed. Think he's better going the other way
By:
Love the way CF wasnt stopping at the end of his race today.
By:
Yeah I like him. Backed him for the GC after festival last year
By:
He was receiving weight from everything today Ibra, was handicapped to finish strongly.
By:
A decent gallop on good ground would suit this horse better i`m sure. Still early days in his chasing career, he hasn`t played all his cards yet.
By:
Had to take some 8/1 on CF given I just don't fancy Simonsig at all.
By:
Maybe so Sint but the others had the supposed fitness edge over CF.
By:
Have taken some 8s myself on CF today for KG. I too fancy him for CGC. Think them races will show him in the light I feel he is threatening to show us! He is the next kicking king imho!
Wont be put off adding dynaste tomorrow at 10s either like pmsl |

Mullins said: "I was delighted with what he did considering how he pulled in the first half of the race. I didn't think he could pull like that and still beat a field of horses rated 150-plus.
"Last week I wasn't coming here, but in his final bit of work he sparked and we decided we'd run him. He's improved over the last 10 days. "We're looking at the John Durkan (Memorial Chase at Punchestown). However, I think Boston Bob is going to go there, and maybe he (Champagne Fever) is just better being a little fresher. "Maybe no run between now and then (Kempton) might be better for him - just keep him good and strong and well." "We're looking at the long-distance races. He has to improve, but the ultimate aim would be the Gold Cup," he said. "He has to prove he's a Gold Cup horse. He hasn't done that yet." |

Mullins is stretching it a bit here. #Alderwood approaching his pension, 20f on heavy ground? rated 149 giving 4lb to CF. #Realt Mor rated 145 giving 4lb to CF #Rio Du Mee totally lost his form rated 150 giving 11lb to CF #Rubi Light lost his way #Sizing Europe was calling it a day. #Rathlin well how far off his mark did he run? 3 stone? So Mullins is talking shyte. |

^ agree.
i think he'll end up the champion chase. |

Here's one from the left field and look forward to being hammered. I've just had a few quid at 3 figure prices on FOX APPEAL. Appreciate on ratings has lots to do and only Dead Heated with Theatre Guide last time at the track over 2m4f, but the way it swept by 3 out makes me think it had loads in hand. After which he tried to throw the race and actually did well to share the race. Hardly an ideal prep but this shows they will have to hold on to him until delivering at the final fence in any race from now on. The fact that he's entered shows they think a fair bit of him and not sure there's that much depth in the race with a few questions over horses at the head of the market.

Al Ferof pretty impressive just now at Ascot.
By:
Anyone still think I was wrong for suggesting SC was trained for Haydock? He looks a 4 miler these days.
Dynaste nicely prepped. |
By:
If you look through the form of last years King George it's not that great. CC did something in the race and was off for the rest of the season and looks like he is not the same horse now. Al Ferof was 3rd and although he won impressively today, it's possible he is in better condition this season as he was suffering with ulcers last season. Dynaste was beaten 50 lengths after pulling muscles so form not literal. Basically, you could argue SC picked up the pieces last season, PFN knows this and trained him accordingly for Haydock as this season he'll be facing several horses with more speed. He'll need it to be heavy ground in my opinion.
By:
Don't know about that,1st 2 last year
boast about 9 Gde 1 wins to their name. |
By:
Cue Card was top class before the King George. How would you describe his finish last season? Plausible he was bottomed in the race? The form does not stack up for me and SC won it like a slogger, a stayer.
By:

This was common knowledge was it not? but he can be trained for 2 races within 5 weeks as well. Kauto Star was trained for both wasn`t he? and how do we know that Conti will not come on 2lb for this run? Agree that he needs a stamina test now on soft, on good ground he could be very vulnerable when the pace quickens up. For me his chance of success in the KG is totally ground dependent. |
By:
you need a stayer to win the KG,
it's a true test, very few non stayers win the race. |
By:
CF is a true stayer - the fact he has been so good at 2m-2m4f is just an indication of how incredible he could be.

I agree i really like Champagne Fever and have backed him at 8s after his last run and i was equally impressed with Conti today and backed him at 4s. I am however of the opinion that CF could turn out to be the better chaser on most types of ground at 2.5 - 3.25 miles, who knows what he could achieve. I think we saw SC's limits last season i.e gold cup.
You might ask, why take 4s against a horse of which i think a better horse i have already taken 8s about in the same race, well the answer is simple, SC won it last season and outstayed conti in a top drawer renewal! CF is the upcoming and hasn't really done it yet in proper top grade 1 race. Plus its all about the book. |

Still think SC was about to win last years Gold Cup in good style until the "sonic gun" reared it's ugly head again! (still amazed more wasn't made of it at time as SC and Bob's Worth swerved in different directions at exactly the same time - Oscar Delta 2013 also anyone?).
He must be one of the most underrated chasers for a long time - a King George, 2 Betfair Chases, Betfair Bowl, 2 huge runs in the Gold Cup etc but still only seems to attract negative comments after winning races. Would never say he is just a "slogger" and the way he has travelled in the last 2 Gold Cups on ground that would be quicker than his optimum would sugggest just that. |
By:
Sonic gun?? Thought i had heard a lot of excuses in my time but that one just took the blue peter badge

By:
I agree regarding the finish to last year's GC. Silviniaco Conti and Bob's Worth looked set to be first and second until something freaked both them out. I'm also curious as to why more wasn't made of it.
By:
"sonic gun" Stars - ie reference to the famous late 80's Royal Ascot episode with Il De Chypre. Really just saying the same as So You Think in that something spooked both horses, whether it was a one off or not time will tell.
Other than that (and the horse has never shown a tendancy to hang before or since) think SC would have been a solid Gold Cup winner, you could even argue that he would have gone close the previous year but for falling when still going well 3 out, although admittedly to argue he would have won maybe pushing it. |
By:
SC was running away from the whip across BW,
when Fehily corrected it he swerved the other way, looks like to me.Other horses were close up why didn't they swerve all over the place? |
By:
Fair point Penzance, just find it strange the horse has never done it before or since, although maybe it was more out it's comfort zone than it could cope with
By:
Silviniaco Conti and Bob's worth would both be two "honest" type of horses and they both looked to finding loads for pressure up until the point they both moved violently at almost precisely the same time. I am still suspicious of what went there. The fact one of the runners in the Hunters did something similar at almost the same part of the course doesn't help either.
By:
Yeah, just a really strange incident. As Penzance points out it could be that SC simply veered to the right once Fehily switches whip to left hand but if you watch BW he definitely jinks violently the other way independently. Maybe it should be filed under "one of those things" but until 100 or so yards from the line the whole season's form looked like being perfectly upheld - then 10 seconds or so later we were left totally confused.
By:
SC wandered all over the track at Aintree
when he won the Bowl. |
By:
You are probably right Penzance, just think BW confused the issue. SC and BW have a string of top class efforts to their name and are as genuine as the come but for some reason on the biggest day of all they both went all over the shop.
Suppose the bottom line is it doesn't really matter - SC is a top class chaser but probably won't win a Gold Cup. |
By:
They were both beat in the CGC cos they just on the day weren't good enough. To say that something happened that cost them the race is imo clutching at very thin straws.
SC has since come out, today, and showed just how classy a horse he is, i don't think he will be winning a CGC and BW won his the year before. May or may not stop me backing either of them for said race if the price is right as it is all about the book for me but i would be shocked if either won. |
By:
No more shocked than I would be about any other horse winning that is prominent in the market at the moment
By:
That GC still baffles me, 150yds out i was doubling up in my placepot, finish line i was out. Still reckon it was down to the slow pace.
Anyway, Champagne Fever is paying for christmas ![]() ![]() |
