I can't say that Great Heavens has impressed me as much as she has a lot of other people - I watched the Irish Oaks a few times and she didn't travel well at all, was rousted along a fair bit from home and it seemed to me that bottomless stamina won her the race.
She just didn't have natural speed to keep up, and capitalised when they collapsed in a heap in front on that bottomless ground, leaving her to look impressive when eventually storming away - the rest were running on fumes. On the evidence of the Curragh, she hasn't got the pace or the acceleration required for a race like this, though a true stamina test on soft ground and a defection or three opens the door slightly for her - furthermore, I don't think she's had an ideal preparation and I reckon she's got it to do. I said a while ago on here that the distance of the St.Leger would have suited her far better than going for this - I'm all for value and I just don't think there's much in her current price (as low as 10/1 with some bookies) so I've duly laid her between 21 & 26 on here - a big red against her name in my AP book is not much of a concern, even if she doesn't lengthen tomorrow, as she'll trade at decent odds I/R come halfway in the Arc. So now that's quite a few of the fancied horses I think represent bad value...Saonois (stamina doubts) Masterstroke (unconvincing form) Great Heavens (too slow) & Yellow And Green (falsely 'eye-catching' run) - even Camelot has plenty of question marks against him. |

hmmm Navel,
im not so sure about great heavens, the filly can only beat whats put in front of her. i hope your right, but filly's can improve massivly from month to month...just look at Danedream last year. do agree with your comment about the irish oaks, but its a filly we are dealing with here so we need not to be dismissing her so quickly. i just think its a bit of a pointer on why gosdens running her, it must have been the plan for some time, and its a factor with gosden in group races. |
|
By:
You're right about improving fillies and her trainer isn't exactly known for being a fool, but I'm always looking for holes in the perceived value and believe me...I'd be making a case for ALL the above if they were treble their present odds!
![]() I'm obsessed with prices...they determine everything! I can't say I think this has been the plan because Gosden is more than open, and would have let us know...I do think it's an after-thought and maybe it's the owners that are insisting on having a runner. |
|
By:
I agree that Gosden was aiming at Fillies race at Ascot for GH so this would be an afterthought if it happens...will know shortly. Much of the talk on here seems to suggest it is a definite.
As far as the Irish Oaks was concerned, I would suggest it was an inexperienced filly's fourth race of the season and not long after her Haydock victory. Obviously it was a big step in class for and whilst the stamina obviously helped, the fact that she came through a flat spot speaks volumes for her natural ability imo. If Gosden is true to his word then he would have GH at concert pitch in a couple of weeks time so whilst I have had a small stab at a decent price, it would be a massive ask for her to win |

For those of you who like Sea Moon's chance be aware that the Arc is the virtual G1 championship over 12f and as such it takes a proven G1 performer to win it. The last time that a horse without a G1 to his name to win was Carnegie back in 1994 trained by Fabre.I don't know how many have tried and failed since then. 12/1 is plenty short enough I would say.
|
|
By:
Sandown - On the stats/profile of the race it is true about Sea Moon but i wouldn't rule out a horse because they haven't won a Group 1, he could have won a gash Group 1 abroad somewhere but it wouldn't have increased his chances. He arguably ran a proper Group 1 time in the Hardwicke which i think is as important if not more important than winning a Group 1 itself. In reality he beat a better field in the Hardwicke than SNA beat in the Coronation so i wouldn't let the lack of a Group 1 against his name detract away from his chances - I think the draw is more of a factor myself. I would rather he was drawn in 7 without a Group 1 win than be drawn in 18 having won a Group 1 race.

A wide draw is a problem for any horse who likes to front run or be on the pace as they use up to much energy getting there but if he prefers to be held-up then a low draw can be a disadvantage with there being too many up the rail in the straight so the draw can't be viewed without the context of the tactics to be employed. So, it all depends. Sea Moon looks like a good staying type whose chance would improve with plenty of cut but on the balance of his form I see no evidence of a good turn of foot which would improve his chance if the ground is faster than soft. What he might have done is conjecture and comparisons with SNA do not help much as SNA doesn't look to be good enough to win without one or two others under-performing.Not saying that SM can't win but at the prices I would be a layer rather than a backer. |
|
By:
Personally i think Sea Moon will be ridden a lot more handily than he was in the King George, if the forecast is correct then it's going to be soft ground and you won't want to be held up too far back. I think they will want him to be 5th or 6th clear of the traffic and will attempt to win by kicking between then 1 furlong - 2 furlong marker so the draw is going to be very important for all the horses in my view, you will need a good position. The comparison with SNA wasn't in terms of their ability but just illustrating that on the face it Sea Moon won a Grade 2 race that was stronger than a Group 1 which SNA won in the Coronation Cup. Sea Moon might well lack the ability to win but i don't think 12/1 is a poor price, a horse like Masterstroke who beat a handicapper last time out and has to find the best part of 2 stone to be competitive is shorter in the market than him, it's the old Fabre factor, if trained by anyone else would be 40/1. I thought Sea Moon showed a nice turn of foot in the Great Voltigeur and officially quickened in the Hardwicke so personally i'm more concerned about his draw and positioning during the race than not having won a group 1. I do think Orfevre is very much the horse to beat and could prove different class.

Completely agree about Masterstoke. Don't know about the ground being soft, i.e our "soft." As I said, it usually rides faster than predicted and the weather from now on looks fine. I'll go for good, possibly good to soft. The only horse who might be not quite advantaged is Shareta, whilst it might not be soft enough for Great heavens. |
|
By:
I think the draw is massive. An example from the top of my head would be So You Think in the race last year, drawn out in the car park, the jockey got cained for this ride but i don't think he could have done much more from his draw. With a better draw i think he would have been 2nd. Horses like Orfevre, who although a hold up horse will surely want to sit in midfield as with the big field i don't think many will get into from the back like last year. Sea The Stars was midfield in a big field although Zarkava was held up but she ran on good ground and was given a lovely ride with speed to burn to her credit.
|
|
By:
Some terrible prices on offer here - Sea Moon, Masterstroke and Camelot should be at least double the price they're currently trading at, and Great Heavens and Bayrir are plenty short enough too given their form and preparations. The value lies with Saonois, as it has for a while, with outsiders like Solemia, Kesampour and Yellow and Green only worthy of consideration if it stays soft.
|
|
By:
I agree I generally raise the French going by at least half a description to our going sometimes more, i.e. if described as good to soft in France then i would rate it as good or good to firm. I don't think it will be heavy as some prediced but i will go for English going of between soft and good to soft. They had rain yesterday and more is forecast although not loads, it's not that warm to dry it out and unless they have improved the drainage in recent years the the ground doesn't dry very well and when i used to go to the track any dry weather used to just make it gluey/sticky ground.
Is the draw tomorrow? |

By:
For people who think Sea Moon is a terrible price at 12/1, perfectly fair enough we all have opinions which is what it's all about, what price would you chalk him up if he didn't run in the King George where it was subsequently found he had a setback and lest we forget he started 2/1 fav for that race? I look through this field and can only respect one horse as proven to be of a very high class level in Orfevre, but the Japanese have yet to show they can condition a horse to win the Arc so that is factored into his price. I would personally have Sea Moon around an 8/1 chance in this field maybe a touch shorter around 13/2 (with a good draw and cut in the ground) as he would have a strong place chance so wouldn't want to lay him too high in the place book and if it went wrong for Orfevre then he doesn't have much to beat for the win itself. I remember having the same argument with people on here regarding First Lieutenant for the RSA Chase, fair enough he didn't win but his price wasn't terrible as he placed second so the bookies were right to not have him over 5/1 to reward each backers on the place. The mug bet in that race was Grands Crus who was never going to stay the trip and was a terrible price.
I agree regards Camelot who if trained by someone like Peter Chapple-Hyam would be 16/1 as the form is horrific, the Irish Derby arguably bottomed him out and he looked like a horse who had done enough for the season last time out. But i concede the bookies have always had him short in the antepost market which is the only angle i give him of winning the race, as his form gives him very little chance even with the withdrawals. Also, it's sporting of connections of Great Heavens to run, but if people think Sea Moon lacks the pace to win an Arc then they obviously haven't seen her run! |
|
By:
Sporting of connections to run Great Heavens? and Camelots form is Horrific?
Are you feeling ok swagger? LOL |
|
By:
bbsband - Well i would be indebted to you to put me right regarding Camelots form and to show that Great Heavens isn't a poor womens Nathaniel
as i say sporting of connections to run her, as it was sporting of connections to have run Masked Marvel who i still think is going around Longchamp? I think Longhchamp will have the bollinger, smoked salmon etc rocking for the big JG again ![]() |
|
By:
Great Heavens only chance of winning this race is if it is Soft or Heavy ground. Her last two wins have been at Haydock and at the Curragh where Pat Smullen described the going as Winter ground. She should have ran in the Leger.
re Camelot .. AOB is 0/41 with his 3yos at the Arc meeting apparently. I'd not back Cammy at 8/1 let alone 3s. ![]() |

Fair enough swagger its all about opinions I guess! Should be a bloody good race and to be honest really looking forward to it.One thing I do know is there will be a few hard luck stories i.e the draw, horses getting boxed in,cutting up,bad timing of runs etc..
Would have liked to have seen top trip entered also. Roll on Sunday ! |

I'll have to backtrack a bit. It's not that I think SM is a terrible price, rather that if he wins then something rather unusual will have happened. I'd have him as a save bet, not a win bet if I was starting afresh, which I'm not, having had the 3 main dangers imo eliminated and ruined my book. Camelot's price is based on memories and promise and boosted by Dettori's popularity. I can't believe that AOB had this in mind unless he had run away with the St Leger on the bridle without having a race. The opposite is true. he had a hard race preceded by a hard race at the Curragh.I guess they haven't anything to lose now that the field has cut up. They have a ready made excuse in the event of failure. If any horse is overbet its Camelot.A poor prep, form not franked and meeting older horses for the first time.Possible place maybe, but win, don't think so. Saonois is the possible fly in the ointment. Everyone keeps saying that 10f is his trip but we don't know that, his breeding suggests he will stay and he has a blinding turn of foot. Forget he won a claimer, he's a real contender and I'd have him shorter although on the ratings he has to improve again. Shareta has a real chance if the ground is not too much against her, SNA has his age against him whilst the Fabre pair are shorter than their form warrants out of respect for the trainer. In short, |I guess I'm saying that Orfevre looks good value at 4.5 S |
|
By:
True, Great Heavens would need cut in the ground and weight concession
should help. Not without a chance imo.O Brien has a dour record there but he has a habit of surprising people with his horses. Certainly can forgive Camelots st leger run.Maybe an off day?? |

PS
Re the Japanese' abilty to condition a horse for the Arc. They got a 1,2 in the Dubai World Cup, won the Melbourne Cup and have gone close at Longchamp. this trainer is the son of Deep Impact's trainer, and DI was world class. They have learned the lessons and given Orfevre the perfect prep and booked Soumillon. All they need is luck with the draw and in-running. A worthy favourite or he should be. Camelot's participation has given us all the chance to get something out of this debacle of an AP market. |
|
By:
I must admit Saonois is a bit of an unknown, i have been lazy and assumed he wouldn't stay so will have to have another look at him. It's just a personal choice but i'm never a fan of when horses run over 6 furlongs early on in their career if they are thought of as a middle distance horse but maybe i'm just naive and it could be a different approach in France. I heard that it rained all night, is still raining and the clerk of the course is expecting the going to be 'Very Soft' by the end of this morning so Great Heavens backers hold those dockets!
|
|
By:
Although same as you Sint, wouldn't back Camelot at that price but at the same time a bold show/big run would not suprise me if that makes sense...
|
|
By:
Sandown - I agree regarding Orfevre and the ability of the Japanese to condition a horse to win big races including the Arc, i just meant that in terms of facts they haven't won it yet which is why his price is perhaps bigger than it should be but they have been unlucky and if Nakayama Festa had any sort of jockey would have arguably won a shade cosily a few years back. I agree that Orfevre has everything in place given a fair draw and given a fair shake in the race itself.

Have to back kesampour at these prices, had a very wide passage at Chantilly, ive seen the trails day form been turned around a few times
|
|
By:
If Sea Moon should be twice the price he is now then why did he go off 2-1 for The King George? His Hardwick form is better than The Derby, Coronation Cup, Irish Derby, Irish Oaks etc so lack of a Group 1 is just a stat and I thought he did show a fast turn of foot in The Hardwick. He got a terrible ride in The King George and had no chance plus he's one of few we know will appreciate soft ground. Horses just don't win The Voltigeur by 8 lengths and I think he's a horse who is difficult to predict but worth having a bet on at big prices and avoiding when short. On form I'd give him a fairly similar chance to those way shorter than him but have to admit I don't know how good Orfevre is. Still I've got 33-1 and 20-1 so am on the right side of the price.

I'm confused re Kesampour. His form says that he handles soft ground and in fact that his best form is on soft.Yet, when he won the Prix Greffuhle, his action seemed to me not to be that of a soft ground performer. What's your opinion? |
|
By:
The value has always been with the French 3 year olds. Which one is probably ground dependent, but Kesampour has a reasonable chance if you excuse him making his run at the wrong time at Chantilly (it was a very messy race) and accept that he blew up in the Niel (dictated pace, so few excuses otherwise). His chance would be improved with real soft ground that would bring out his stamina and blunt the speed of those like Saonois (who should be fav imo). Others like Bayrir and Yellow & Green are decent prices. Market made by Camelot, Sea Moon, SNA and Masterstroke.
Anyone know of a market for backing the nationality of the winner? |
|
By:
I expect the ground will dry out as it usually does, so wouldn't back a soft ground horse unless it rains again. no idea why people question Saonois' stamina - his sire stayed, his dam's side is full of stamina, he's won over 12f and was going away at the end of the Jockey-Club over 10. Total red herring imo - the ground is much more of a worry.
|
|
By:
Sandown
Id certainly agree with the look of his action, even in the French Derby, the only thing that leads me to believe that it suits him is his form and that fact, at least at Chantilly is that he looks to be hitting the ground quite hard, id agree that Saonis's stamina isnt a worry for me at all, his action would be the thing on softish ground in spite of what his connections say and he's a saver on decent ground |

Getting back to the stats of the majority of winners in the last 20 years;
1/ Won a group 1 2/ Won a group 1 that season by 2 lengths 3/ Had not run in the race prevuiously 4/ No fillies or mares unless they had beaten the colts in a group 1 race previously. Just using the above narrows it down to a 2 horse race. Camelot... This season's hype horse of a very poor bunch. The form of his wins makes for depressing reading, was beaten lto by a horse whos best form was winning a handicap, and this race is an afterthought. Ofeuvre... Not at all clued up on Japanese racing, but 5/5 between 10-12f and 3 times won a group 1 by more than 2 lengths. 3/1 looks a very fair price atm, and no doubt the Yen on the PMU will send it odds on. |

I have three different markets on the go for the Arc (due to confusing methods of deposit and bank card troubles) and there's a minimum green of £78 on one particular account, so why am I not allowed to place a £50 bet when there are no lays bets on the go?

im cursing myself here, im still sticking with Orfevre as was my main pick 8 weeks ago, and im on some value with this masterstroke at 32/1.
This great heavens is still a real worry for me , ive just got this horrible feeling that Gosdens playing a card here that ive completley missed it , i should have taken note with regards to the possibility of running her instead of Nathaniel gives Nathaniels season and the way gosden and nathaniel line them up with this princess haya. Its not so much with being bullish with how good the filly is, becausue i cant be the judge of that, its more the case that all of a sudden its been hammered into a price within a matter of 24hrs and ive just got this horrible feeling that its been the target for a long time....and normally in a race like the arc , only a few can win it with regards to their seasons preparations. Its one of the main reasons why i didnt back Danedream/Nathaniel for good bets, and its the same reason why i wouldnt touch Shareta or Camelot. Gosden/Buick is such a class combination that its only a matter of time that they lined one up for the race...and like i say , i think i might have missed the boat on this one, if it would have been any other trainer i would have had interests some time ago...but i just cant get gosdens right. People always say that gosdens is as honest as the day is long but im of the opinion that he is quite the opposite with how he enters his horses in group races, i dont know what it is but he just seems to go under the radar of most. well ..i will be sick if it nips orfevre or masterstroke on the post on sunday...sick sick sick |

RK - I just can't see it happening and I don't even fancy Great Heavens for the frame!
There's an unhealthy red next to her name for me at the moment but I'm not too concerned...as I mentioned yesterday, she'll definitely trade higher at halfway. Ideally, I'd like to reduce the deficit ASAP as it means having too much money tied up for a few days, but I can't bring myself to back her at 13. My Reliable Man has sadly gone west, and I really wasn't expecting that...maybe the geezers who laid it at 400 to me knew a lot more than I did ![]() |
