This supplementary business has got me absolutely lost
![]() Saonois is still not entered...why would connections keep deferring like this? I'd assume it got more expensive the later the entry, so what's going on? It doesn't make sense to me. Also, you lot might laugh, but it's happened before in this game...what if the person whose job it is to supplement Saonois gets ill or oversleeps? They'd be fcuked if there was no plan 'b' and I can't see the benefit of hanging on until the last possible entry stage. Can anyone elaborate as to the costs at the entry stages (if already in) and supplementary charges - thanks. I could've swore last year that connections of Masked Marvel had to stump up a serious amount to enter. |
By:
This is why every trainer should employ an excellent secretary, who has a real enthusiasm for the job.
By:
The 2nd and 3rd October were the two forfeit stages and tomorrow is for the supplementary
By:
Supp entry is 100,000 Euros.
I would imagine that the entry is already made and they are simply not released until tomorrow |

Anyone remember the incident with Graham Bradley's alarm clock?

I saw on Equidia that they seem to be linking Mosse with Kesampour, it's hard to tell as I dont speak french but he was mentioned when they were discussing Kesampour, they had all Aga Khan Arc bound horses working together from Royer Dupre and Delzangles with the Aga Khan yesterday, it's on Youtube, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5wUlIZhQjRo

Thanks Phil - this horse has been very quiet in the market (very little news as well) and has been TOO big to lay, so I've kept him onside.
He was my St.Leger horse when I saw him win last Spring and he looks a real stayer who'll appreciate a bit of cut...a typical Aga Khan 3yo, who's far from exposed. |
By:
Any further news about Great Heavens?
Her trainer is the most honest bloke in racing who'd never take the piss like O'Brien & Stoute...has Johnny had anything to say about the possibility of supplementing? What is the latest on the ground at Longchamp? |
By:
He looked a really good horse early this year up to the Greffulhe when he beat Saonois on heavy ground before the French derby, I didn't think he ran too bad in the French Derby and the Niel where he just got tired in the last 50 yards after a lay-off, Delzangles made excuses for his run in the Derby due to sinus problems. The ground at Longchamp will suit him better I think and he could improve and and reverse form with Saonois with a stronger pace and ground conditions in his favour, Ive backed him at decent prices and a lively outsider if all the predicted rain comes, it's soft currently.
By:
Thanks again Phil...he's looked to me a bit short of foot and hasn't had a race run to suit so far - he really battled on well in the Greffulhe, and although he had a relatively smooth passage at Chantilly compared to many who didn't, 10.5f looked too short for him.
He was really trying and hanging on for dear life in the Niel but the lack of pace in the race found him out. It has to be remembered that 3yo's have a great record in the race, and after Camelot (who looks eminently beatable) there's little strength amongst the generation and something could surprise. |
By:
I Agree he doesn't have a turn of foot but he travels really well in his races and grinds, he was carried quite wide in the French Derby and lost quite a lot of ground to Saonois, though he did when smartly he was less than a length behind. On quick ground he wouldn't stand a chance but with it looking like it's going to be soft you never know, I can see him being ridden prominently and keeping out of trouble.
It's a shame Nathaniel is out as I think it would have been perfect for him, I may back SNA & Camelot if they go out to a decent price on the PMU with all the money that should come for Orfevre. |
By:
The ground at Longchamp is good to soft but rain is expected on Wednesday afternoon and it could last for 24 hours. Thursday night and all day Friday the rain should hold off but it is forecast to return on Saturday according to Meteo France, which predicts that Sunday will be a beautiful day.
Clerk of the course Christian Delporte said this morning: "It is in the lap of the gods. If we don't have too much rain it could be good to soft or soft for Sunday but more testing if we have more than expected. The grass will be at a length of nine and a half centimetres." |
By:
Kesampours trial run caught my eye too.
By:
Just wondering if there's gonna be a decent pace on, cant see much bar a coolmare hare. Sea Moon did an exceptional time on the day in the Hardwicke and it;s quite possible he wasnt in the same form in the KG due to this. If i could be sure the pace was decent and he gets a single figure draw, he'l be right in the mix 4 me.

By:
J A P S have a pacemaker in aswell.
By:
Sint - that same pacemaker was in the Foy as well, but didn't play a part at all!
You'd think the Jáps would want a solid pace (as Orfevre is a strong stayer) but that trial was very inconclusive. |
By:
Great job he did in the Foy
There definitely needs to be more than one because if one goes off too quick the rest of the field will ignore it. |
By:
I think someone said on here the duty of the pacemaker that days was to set a SLOW PACE so Orfevre did not have a hard race. You'd expect him to go quicker on Sunday.
No idea if that was the plan in the Foy though but it's one way of looking at it. |
By:
Well I read that Soumillon was screaming at the other jockey to go faster.
By:
well, what a last few days.
both my savers being pulled out, so orfevre and masterstroke left. I can now not see Orfevre being beat if it gets to the front, just crossing my fingers it gets an ok draw. |
By:
That someone was me and to be honest I think I was right on the money because JOCKEY and TRAINER said it was the perfect prep race. Why would any good trainer make his horse run hell for leather in a prep race, it's just bonkers. I'm sure Ikee (trainer) knows the pace will be stronger in the Arc, the Prix Foy was used to take the fizz out Orfevre and teach him some Longchamp lessons. The stronger the pace the better but if it was a slow run race I wouldn't be bothered because he has speed to burn, the Prix Foy and all his winning races in Japan prove that.
My only worries are the draw and bottomless ground but I think I've got a good back up with Yellow and Green if the ground goes very soft! ![]() |
By:
Mr.D - you could well be right as I haven't got a clue what sort of tactics go in in Japan, though I too heard that business about Soumillon urging Aventino's pilot to step on the gas.
Yet another 'variable' in what's turning into a real conundrum of a race. |
By:
Maybe Ikee told Anthony Crastus to go a steady pace and AC over did it a bit but I'm confident that is what they planned! I don't know why people are moaning about the pace in the Prix Foy, it was perfect for Orfevre's preparation. I couldn't give a stuff about the other horses in the Prix Foy, the pacemaker did what he had to do for Orfevre.
There is a lot more to come from the monster, this fella is awesome. Soummy singing is praises after his work out today, Sunday cannot come soon enough for me. |
By:
Not that I disagree with anything that you have said Mr D, but what is the role for the pacemaker on Sunday?
By:
I haven't got a clue Roobuck, but I do know the monster can be highly strung before and after races so he might be used to keep him company going down to the start to try and keep a lid on that. He's had a couple of issues this year but he looked settled at the start of the Prix Foy and didn't pull too hard during the race. I'm confident Ikee and his team have got him where they want him now!
By:
Fair enough keeping him calm before the race makes some sense.
I knew he had 'character' and that he can pull and had thought that what the pacemaker was for. My initial impression of the Prix Foy was that he won despite of the pacemaker and that made his win that bit more meritorious. Anyway I'm hoping he wins as well. Hopefully the ground won't be too soft to stop him and soft enough to allow Sea Moon to place. |
By:
You and me both Roo, the ground is a minor issue but it was Soft ground in the Japan Derby and that didn't stop him.
Ballydoyle and Godolphin have used pacemakers to brilliant effect in the past!! ![]() |
By:
The quotes I used came from the SKY site, firstly the reporter said that both jockeys executed instructions to the letter in the FOY,
secondly it was reported in FALLONS column WEEKENDER that he witnessed SOUMILLON shouting for CRASTUS to go faster. |

re Great Heavens:
William Buick should have ridden four-year-old Nathaniel in the Prix de L'Arc in Paris on Sunday. But Nathaniel is deleted. Wednesday Reviewed by trainer John Gosden's 3-year mare, Great Heavens - with Buick aboard Sunday. - It was really bad about Nathaniel. He stands with a fever and an infection. Blood ratio is not good, says Buick which then sits up on a different horse after wonderful mare Magnificient Style - which also made percussionist, Norwegian owned U.S. Grand National Champion. After review from Gosden and owner Lady Serena Rothschild cost the tidy sum of 100,000 pounds. But it is not small change in the pot at Longchamps; giant 2250 000 awaits the winner of the Prix de L'Arc, Europe's most prestigious horse races in distance is 2400 meters. - They had not reviewed by if she had been without risks. I won the Irish Oaks at the Great Heavens. She is not ranked as high as Nathaniel, but we have not beaten in advance, says an offensive William Buick to rikstoto.no. |

I'm with Orfevre but there are a couple of considerations to be aware of.
First, the ground. The times in Japan of his races suggest very fast ground. Even the so-called soft ground win was in a time that we would call good ground. His action is not that of a soft ground horse. Having said that,I don't think it will be soft ground. The weather forecast is good for Sat/Sunday and the French descriptions of ground don't match ours. The race on Sunday will be run on 20 metres of fresh ground up the straight , not been used for weeks/months. It always rides faster than on the Sat. Secondly, the tactics employed are invariably to hold him up, and were overdone when he was unplaced over 16f. His breeding does not indicate bags of stamina despite the win over 15f in a slower time than his other races, but he did finish in a fast split. I think 12f is his ideal distance. Thirdly, and of greater concern, is the way he ran out when just beaten into 2nd. They had him on the pace in that race and he seemed to be unsteerable going round a bend. He must have lost 10 lengths and was amazing in getting back into the race. He would have won 10 lengths otherwise. No doubt Soumillon wll hold him up and that may mean that a wide draw would not be a huge problem, but he wil need luck in-running. |
By:
Lot of ifs and buts here, but Sea Moon seems overpriced to me.
He was favourite to beat Nathaniel and Danedream at Ascot last time and probably didn't quite run his race, for whatever reason. John Berry was very positive on ATR earier in the week, said it was looking outstanding on the gallops. An ease in the ground won't be a problem and this season's 3yo's generally look to be a below par bunch. If he's back to his best (as when wiining the Voltigeur by 8L) he's no 12/1 chance. |
By:
this gosden 3yo great heavens is slightly worrying me , i didnt get chance to even evaluate it.
little bit worried because it looks like its been the horses main aim, plus its won comfortably in its last 4 runs. kind of hard to evaluate but how they have messed about with nathanial is making me think that it could have even improved further. mmm, little bit worried that orfevre's price has settled to same price prior to withdrawals this week..hmmmm. ffs, might have to have an interest bet on gosdens...just cant believe how much ive been a mug ive been if its been the aim since the spring for great heavens. |
By:
i can never get a read on gosdens stable, you just never get a clue on what is going on.
By:
Sandown, don't worry about the monster being un-steerable, he hasn't got a powder puff Japanese jockey onboard this time. The more I watch that race the more iffy I think the ride was from Kenichi Ikezoe. Very odd, especially down the final stretch (hardly trying) but one of the most sensational things I've seen from a horse. It was like he was at the Velodrome doing a turn in a team pursuit.

With the defections I'm liking Sea Moon's chance.
Sir Michael proven before he can bring a King George flop back to win the Arc and Workforce put in a far more pathetic display. We know something wasn't right with SeaMoon at Ascot but he wasn't that far behind Nathaniel and Danedream and they won't be taking him on this time. I think if Sir Michael's got him right back to his best he'll be bang there fighting out the finish. |
By:
Totally agree about Sea Moon. Of the older horses he is the one i think has the best shot of winning the Arc provided a good draw and he is ridden closer to the pace.
However it will be hard for the older horses though as there is at least one outstanding 3yo in the field and i have a feeling that we will see the real Camelot at Longchamp. Something tells me that O'Brien has pulled a fast one here using the Leger as a prep for the real target which was always the Arc. Camelot didn't have a hard race in the Leger probably with Sunday in mind. It is also strange that O'Brien has adopted the typical French prep by giving the horse a summer break after the Irish Derby and bringing him back in September for a prep prior to the Arc. Booking Dettori also shows they mean business. |
