Nakayama festa better than Orfevre? Now that is a clueless comment. Your mum should send you to your room for being such a silly boy!!Laugh

I second that Akak!

I watched all of Orfevre's 3 year old races and thought he looked pretty special but was a little unsure of how good the Japanese 3 year old form was at the time. It was when he won the big G1 race at Nakayama on Christmas Day last year when I thought this horse really was a potential Arc winner. He cruised around the outside of some top class horses (Buena Vista, Tosen Jordan, Eishin Flash, Rulership) and made them look one paced, it was a very comfy win.

I respect everybody's views on here because horse racing can make us all look stupid on occasions but some of the comments are bordering on the ridiculous.

Andre Fabre not confident of turning form round on Orfevre in Arc with Meandre after Prix Foy. Fabre also confirmed Last Train will not go for the Arc but is expected to make a nice four-year-old next season.

Anyone know the rules on doping in Japan compared to France? Just wondering if the Japanese dope their horses like the Americans.

I have 2 thoughts concerning the outcome of the weekend's races.

1. Why is a horse who was being talked of in "awe" at Ballydoyle (allowing something for hype), a 2000 gns  and Derby winner, and 5/2 fav for the Arc prior to being beaten  1 length in a G1 over 14f now regarded as being a no-hoper and available at 25/1? Camelot is lightly raced, and whilst the Leger is a not regarded as a traditional stepping stone to the Arc, surely he still has an excellent win chance? Until he is a 100% non-runner he should be still considered.

2. Orfevre looks like the new Deep Impact, perhaps with a better preparation. Will he be hammered on the day on the PM just like DI? Was anything learned yesterday? If not, we still have the conundrum of equating Far East form with European form. It looks an open year to me, with no outstanding candidate.

For those who remember the race, Saonois had nearly as rough a passage as the runner-up Saint Baudolino in the French Derby, and there was definitely no fluke about that!

He's a damned good colt and in a normal year (without Frankel around) the Champion Stakes, and not the Arc would be the preferred target if I owned him.

That's not just being wise after yesterday's event (because he's one of many I've backed at huge odds) but he shows terrific speed & bravery, and a strong gallop over 12f would be a far tougher challenge for him, which he may not handle - that's why I've unloaded my sizeable potential profits on him and laid him at the price he is now, as he no longer represents value at 10's.

Also, concerning the value in this race...I know it's a 100/1 chance that Frankel will run in the Arc, but that would cause utter havoc in a market like we've NEVER seen in our lives, AND I also suspect that if Camelot was given the OK, he would be favourite!

Undoubtedly, the prices of the prominent ones in the betting will be on the slide then!

PS - I don't know what sort of field 'does it' for some of you guys but this year's race in my opinion is better than average, and as ever, the most eagerly awaited race of the year for me! There's no pleasing some of you Sad

It's REGULARLY the world's best race for quality & quantity, though sometimes the best don't win...that makes it more exciting, to think we could have another stunning winner from nowhere like Danedream!

I couldn't back Camelot for two reasons. The first, I dont think he will run. The second, I dont think he'll win anyway.

And actually, I am going to throw in a 3rd reason, Joseph Obrien around Longchamp.

Plus I suspect they will run SNA. He only has 1.5 lengths to make up on Danedream & Nathaniel.

Strontium - I hate this business of being permanently in the dark about running plans, and I think the best guide is usually looking at the markets on here.
In the case of Imperial Monarch, it's impossible to gauge anything, as his price is consistently yoyo-ing!

He touched 240 a couple of days ago and was last matched today at 29! Shocked
WTF is going on? Confused

Navel, I kinow what you mean. He was the same for the Leger. It's frustrating.

I notice there's been money for him this morning on all the big exchanges, but as you say he was very weak earlier in the weekend. No clues from Laddies odds either. I wonder if he may run in the Arc instead of Camelot? I know IM is no superstar, but a G1 winning 3yo with course form fits the profile of many Arc winners.

Just so I don't have Bazzar on my flank when he wakes up...I should have phrased that as the PERCEIVED best, because she was undoubtedly the best horse on the day...no question of that!

Just a little pointer, SHARETA covered the same distance as ORFEVRE, SAONOIS
all carrying 9st 2lbs, 5 1/5 seconds faster than ORFEVRE and 6 1/4 seconds faster than SAONOIS.

what a comment pricelessGrin

for me very taken by the 3 year old saonais and was a little perplexed by ofevre although there was no pace for him to run at...

those that have nice prices must be content....

just looking at the sectionals and saonais covered the last 600 metres one second faster than ofevre and much more easily than ofevre....

my main concern for saonais come the race, would be deep ground but he looks an exciting horse and is still a tad of value imo...anyone who has watched the french derby saw what an awful run through saonais had and unlike others i feel this horse is a weapon and with a lot more to come in a better run race...the niel contained some nice horses of decent standard, time will tell but if the ground is good he will run a massive race imo...

Just tuned into the Betfair Arc market...WTF is going on with Masterstroke? Shocked

Is this down to Segal?

I managed to get nearly a fiver on him at 160 a while ago, but it was just a speculative bet for the portfolio, as I wasn't really impressed too much.
The price now is ludicrous and I've just HAD TO empty out between 14 & 16 because that price is utter madness!

Now I've got a huge £1400 red against his name but I'm not concerned, as he'll drift tomorrow (or soon after) and he's got loads to find!

Grin Not at all Pete...it was just under a fiver, and as I've told many on here before, I back LOADS!
The one that's really pissed me off is Sapphire as I fancy she could be a group one filly and Weld keeps pulling her out! Angry

I've backed her at 1000 for over £8 and I won't sell my arse on her, because if (and it's a big 'if') she makes the gig, she's got more than a squeak!
I wouldn't sell that bet at three figures.

Take a close look at her form, and watch the re-runs - she's been excellent.

PS - you're not talking about Encke are you? Shocked

Pete - I think it was Bazzar that was critical of my 'scatter-gun' approach (apologies if not) but I think that's easy to defend when there is some fantastic three-figure value on here months in advance.

The likes of 4yo's with proven quality form like Meandre, Reliable Man, Shareta, Galikova & Sea Moon have hit silly prices after early season disappointments, and I see that as the time to step in, as what trainer is gonna have a proven 4yo at full tilt in the early months of the season, when the main objective is very likely to be the Arc?

Some like Masked Marvel go awry but at massive prices, a few quid ain't gonna damage the budget too much.

My methods work for me though I'm sure they're not to everyone's taste, like Bazzar, who actually called me a novice recently Shocked
I'm deeply hurt Baz Sad

Continue with your friend PETE you do have the gang mentality.
What a precious little person you are, frightened by an opinion as regards a scatter gun approach, what fun is there in hitting anything from 10 to 20 targets in the same race?
That is how many you have up to now, NAVEL.
T here are only 20 allowed to run in the ARC, I think.

Bazzar - if someone's methods work for them then I wouldn't be scornful.
Mine work for me and I hope you have some luck with your own systems.

I can't see the point of bickering on a forum, but I can assure you of one thing...I'm no 'tyro' as you put it, and there are many on here (I don't personally know, because only Manuel Padilla knows who I am) that'd back me in a head to head with your good self where racing knowledge is concerned.

In other guises (ask Wildmanfromborneo) I've won plenty of the racing quizzes on here, where the options aren't 'google-able' Plain

PS - I thought the 'bizarre' pun was rather humorous DevilWink

Laughing out loud! And I don't say that too often.

NG - as I think you know, I try to bet every horse in the race so I'm very much a blunderbuss.
I'm happy to come out with a green book. Low returns but low risk, that's my method.

And you're spot on about the value. I'm sure if Headmaster was here, he would endorse your approach.

Masterstroke eh!

Well I'll get slagged here but i think hes put in the most eye catching performance of all the french races within the last 8 weeks.

As i said on this thread 3 days ago,  had a ton on at 32/1  based on a visual clue.

RK - we all see things differently don't we?
I can't say I fancy the colt but I thought that last year about Danedream! Blush
It's a fool that laughs at others' selections when they're far from exposed.

That 160 I mentioned I got for Masterstroke (less than a fiver) was after that race you mention, but I didn't really see it as THAT eye-catching - it was just a bit of 'cover' for the portfolio, but now he's a huge liability for me!

He showed a decent bit of speed towards the end of the race to win with a little in hand but I suspect Fabre's has had him behind several other 3yo's in his estimations (like Saint Baudolino, Last Train & Aesop's Fables) because he's not been entered for any of the bigger races - that's off-putting to me, but he could be more of an improving late-developer - very surprised not to see him in the Niel dec's a while back.

I'm in the red on just three now in the Arc, Masterstroke (for too much) Shareta & Saonois (for around £300) but I'm confident they'll drift (at some stage) and I can get things ALL healthily green Happy

I think all three are false prices right now, but in the unlikely event they don't lengthen...it's back them I/R time and hope for the best! Laugh
I'm holding a lukewarm potato that could end up scalding Scared

PS - even Danedream is now a small green, which emphasises how much I laid everything before the weekend's trials as I laid her at 7 for over a ton and was in the red for £250!
I could really do with Aidan telling us he's targeting Camelot, as he's a decent winner for me, and he could even drop to favourite with confirmation of a run - fingers crossed, as he'll make it an even better race and EVERYTHING will drift.

That's my lay money for £500 at 3.25 in case I don't get out of bed & miss the early news Grin
Laying at 9/4 wouldn't concern me too much if someone wanted it.

At this moment, I could easily 'get out' with an entirely green book, but I'm sure I'm doing the right thing in being patient & trusting my own judgement.

Besides...it cuts both ways and tomorrow morning, any of those three could be withdrawn!
It's happened to me already with some massive winners like Saint Baudolino & Golden Lilac dropping out, and others like Imperial Monarch & Princess Highway whose participation is uncertain.

Do some of you guys operate the same way?
If so, how are you getting on?

I tend to be a lot more choosy when making a book with regards to the Arc, its that type of race where class tells and experience of looking at how horses are campaigned in the lead up

If you look at the last 10 running's of the race ...the best horse has won in my opinion

The Arc has always been quite easy for me to make good money, i think its because Ive tuned my attention to flat racing in the last 5 years between the last week of September and the middle of December with regards to international races.

the first time i actually started to take notice of the Arc was in 2001 when Sakhee hammered the field in a bog , i didn't bet in the race but i was hooked on the spectacle. Dettori then made me a months wage on marianbard in 2002 when i was just 21yo. I cant believe how quickly 10 years has gone.Scared

in the last few years Ive actually got quite serious on my betting volume on the arc because of the exchanges, i do believe their are certain underlying rules that are attached to the race as the season begins to unravel.

This year i started do my backing only 4 weeks ago, i backed the mare Sarah Lynx as an interest bets of 40 quid, and Orfevre being my main bet between 19/1 and 22/1 for approx 320 pounds , i then backed savers on Nathaniel and Dandream as savers on my stakes . I then have had my last bet a few days back on Masterstroke at 32/1 to 100 quid

Thing is with the arc ,if you do enough looking at the trials ...and i mean going back throughout all of the German, English, french races going back to beginning of august it can be quite obvious sometimes with regards to spotting something that has shown a good performance visually ....and i always try and make that my last bet before the race.

I'm happy with my bets at this stage and i confident that i have a good enough lot to not touch the exchanges now until the race.

Id be a little shell shocked if i don't get one of my runners winning or going very close, i just cant see anything coming out of the pack within the next 3 weeks

last year was my best bet Ive ever had on a single bet in my life. Dandream was 48/1 before the off last year and i made her the fav in my book weeks before the race, probably one of the best piece of race reading ive done on the arc  as i was so confident she would win by many lenghts , i still think she can win it this year but it just wouldnt make me a profit if she did...but i wouldn't grumblePlain

To finish , im quite pleased with myself with that bet i had on masterstroke a few days back at 32/1, its sweetened my market which im happy with, im only pissed off that i didnt notice it 2 weeks ago when i watched all the replays from france, she must have been 100/1 at least..

I think you've got more than a decent hand there, but Orfevre is the one for me, and as a huge-priced potential shocker I'd nominate Reliable Man on the basis that he's likely to run, has steadily improved this season (being wound-up for the big day I expect) and as long as the ground's not as fast as last year, he's in with an E/W squeak - have a close look at how he's ran this year as he's definitely a forgotten contender.

How the fcuk you found Marienbard is beyond me Shocked
I gave him little chance but these things teach you lessons and you learn from them.

Danedream was another big shock for me (especially the way she won) but there was absolutely no fluke about it!

I've always been of the opinion that some real bums (not even group two horses) have NEARLY won the Arc (like Mubtaker a few years ago) and I'll post a few thoughts on that tomorrow as I'm running on fumes right now.

Some of the placed horses bang there on the premises have been eminently forgettable, and I'd bet the vast majority on here wouldn't have even HEARD of some of them, let alone remember them!

For starters...Boyatino, Califet & It's Gino who was third to Zarkava.

PS - I won't tell you how many I've backed in the race as Bazzar will shout at me Silly and think I know fcuk all, but I have a green book every time on these sort of races, where you can back horses over the months, though sadly, none of the massive winners for me has come off YET Wink

PPS - Shareta was a five figure winner for me last year and if it wasn't for that Kraut filly, I'd have collected! Laugh
I had to make do with the minimum green of £650 for Danedream, and I was gutted because I laid her at three figure odds Cry
