All ratings are suspect. I am certain IC is no 185 horse based on that Gold Cup, that is saying Denman was a 178 on Gold Cup day. Given how Denman ran in his other two runs either side of Chelts I'd have major doubts he was 178. But at the end of the day the handicapper is the handicapper. His ratings are what they race off.

When Denman won a 3mile novice chase by a distance at Newbury on soft ground in Febuary 07 carrying 11:12 he recorded a time 1.5 seconds faster than Kauto Star who on the same day beat L'Ami in an all out effort by a nose carrying 11:10.
Since then Kautos record on flat left handed tracks has been won 2 lost 3.

Thats what you get with Phil Smith in charge and ratings inflation on order to penalise winners more heavily

Nothing official yet but one interpretation of Sam Thomas on Denman in Hennessy is that AP McCoy will be available for Kauto Star

The timing of this means it looks like Kauto is fresh at home today and so points to him bring run in the Hennessy with AP in the Saddle.

Actually AP had to ride for JP.

Binocular a possible for the Fighting Fifth at Newcastle the same day as the Hennessy. McCoy would have to go there.

Barber said AP has to ride for JP in the hennessy so that's why sam rides Denman.

Would/could McCoy do 10st on anything in the Hennessy if Kauto runs?

Henderson stable tour in RP says " I think we are agreed " Binocular goes FF/Christmas Hurdle route so that explains that.

Yeah, no bonus this year. Explains why Kauto isn't going to Haydock this year.

So If AP cannot ride Kauto in Hennessey, who will??
Baffled to be honest.
Gut feeling is they will decide this week not to run.

Ruby getting injured is certain to have been a factor in the decision making. But if Kauto is bouncing on Wednesday I'd say they'll run him. B365 at Sandown is the only other handicap they can run him in.

Meanwhile, Paddy Power suspended their market on which jockey would partner Kauto Star in the King George, in the absence of the injured Ruby Walsh. A spokesman said that suspicions were aroused when an existing client asked for a price about Noel Fehily.

Popham? I like him and his booking is the reason I've backed Poquelin e/w @ 12/1 for PaddyP. I'd like him on Kauto, he can claim 5lbs too. Meaning 11-7. KAuto is an easy ride these days too.

Yep,thats the one, rode a nice race on Sat at Wincanton.Like you say Kauto would be a fairly straight forward ride and the weight off comes in handy.Definitely worse shouts then him i reckon.

Would Sam Twiston-Davies be available, noticed he rode one for Nicholls the other day

Another one who can claim a handy bit of weight off

After Popham win the PaddyP on Poquelin he'll be given the ride on Kauto Cool

Should certainly run a big race cv,be fitter than a lot i should think.I might take a chance on Mad Max being fit, although trainer is a bit slow in getting going this season.
By:

And if he does ride a good race on Poquelin,i imagine they will consider him for Kauto.

Sorry to be miserable, but hope he doesn't run in Hennessy as will kill the handicap more than Denman would.  Could end up with only half a dozen runners.
By:

When: 09 Nov 10 22:04
Get a conditional jockey aboard and he's on say 11-7, Denman on 11-4 and everyone else out of the handicap. It'll be amazing stuff.

couple of times i've heard nicholls talking about kauto in the hennessy i get the distinct impression that he hates the mere thought of it happening.

Dont surprise me,it seems the owners idea.Nicholls being the trainer should know whats right, and Ruby the other day did not sem that keen, and they are the professionals here, not Smith.
Still,we should find out later.

Well to be fair it's eat to understand rubys position. He'd have to get off the favorite and ride kauto while also knowing this may take the edge off kauto in the king george. Effectively reducing his chances to win both races. I'm sure we'll find out if kauto runs on thursday. I think I read clive is to meet nicholls then.

I see no reason, other than the going, why he won't run. He was entered in the first place I'm sure with the plan that if everything went OK in Ireland he would run. The horse seems fine, won easily and I'm sure they would want to run him again before the KG while he is in good form.
The jockey is an issue. Two other jockey's have ridden him and their results were pretty positive so Ruby is not irreplaceable.
Next year may/will be too late so I have him down as a certain runner. Winning a mickey mouse handicap somewhere will achieve nothing if Clive Smith's aims are to try to raise his profile.
Of course they may wait until after the Paddy Power to see how Long Run, 2nd favourite in the King George, runs. If LR wins and wins easily then the Hennessy could be nailed on as a run.

Alternatively, of course, should Long Run win easily on Saturday CS may think more prestige could be gained from beating LR in the KG and would need KS to be on absolutely top form. Interesting times ahead.

The more I think about, this the more I begin to see the logic in running Kauto...

By hacking Kauto around with a really good claimer - they give him every chance to let loose a few from home... keeps him fit, might win, might settle the in-house Denman v Kauto argument... by not giving him a hard race they keep him primed for KG... AND they wreck the handicap and most likely hand a 3rd Hennessey to Denman...  would be a win-win situation... and a masterstroke if either win and KS gets the King George... which he surely will, WHOEVER rides...

My only concern would be if KS gets a beating to win the KG he may leave the Gold cup behind there at Kempton... but hey, take the birds in the hand and worry about those in the bush later...

Jovckey will be under instructions that this is still a prep race, his main aim is the King George. So if he is not gonna win he should be eased up, do a bit of training in public. Bottom line is his presence helps Denman. Helps Nicholls and Denners make history in getting a 3rd Hennessy

Well, if he is not going to win 2 out they can cost home. The job is done getting weight off denman.
